A black and cream lumbar pillow that leads four stripes across a walnut bed
Élodie reads a bed dressed in nothing but stripes, and retells a buyer's mixed-color project that taught her small pieces are never small work.

The quick answer
To mix striped throw pillows on one bed, put the highest-contrast stripe on the lumbar pillow in front and let the squares behind it step up in stripe width. Here a black and cream wide stripe leads a wine pinstripe, a royal blue medium stripe and a yellow wide stripe. White linen and walnut stay neutral, so four patterns read as one set.
Four stripes and one leader
Four striped pillows on one bed ought to be too many. On this walnut bed they are not, and the reason is order, not luck.
The lumbar pillow in front carries the boldest stripe in the room: wide bands of black and cream, knife-edged, with no piping to interrupt them. Behind it stand three squares, and read from left to right they grow in scale: a fine wine pinstripe, a royal blue medium stripe, then a wide yellow and white band. The eye climbs that staircase without effort.
A lumbar sits lowest and closest, so it is the first thing the eye touches. Give it the strongest contrast and everything behind it can afford to be softer. Put the black and cream on a square at the back instead and the whole bed tips backward. Let one color speak and the others listen: here black speaks, and wine, blue and yellow answer at a lower volume.
The light is clean and cool, a morning that shows every line honestly. White linen and the white sleeping pillows give the stripes a blank page, and walnut adds one warm, quiet wood. On the nightstand, a short stack of books wears a small ceramic bowl like a hat. It is the calmest object in the picture, and it has to be, standing beside four patterns.
Building a set like this? Start with lumbar pillows in the Atlas, keep the striped cotton and ticking shelf open, and try stripe widths in the pillow cover studio. Which pillow on your bed has the most contrast, my friends?
Swatch strip: one bed, six colors
- Ink black#1C1C1EThe leading stripe and the only true dark on the bed.
- Cream#EFE7D6Softens the black so the lumbar reads graphic, not harsh.
- Wine#6E1F2BThe deepest color arrives in the thinnest line, a pinstripe.
- Royal blue#2B4DA0Medium width, the bridge between fine and wide.
- Sunflower yellow#E0B43AThe widest colored stripe, placed at the end of the row.
- Walnut#5A3A24The one warm neutral holding the set together.
Pinned by Élodie
Follow the pins from the black and cream lumbar to the wine, blue and yellow squares, then across to the books and the little bowl.

- Black and cream stripe lumbar
The most graphic stripe leads from the front and anchors three colored stripes.
- Wine pinstripe
The finest stripe sits furthest back on the left.
- Blue medium stripe
A medium stripe in the middle bridges fine and wide.
- Yellow wide stripe
The widest colored stripe finishes the left-to-right growth in scale.
- Books and bowl
A simple book stack keeps the nightstand calm next to four patterns.

A mixed-color floor seating plan, and the round pieces that changed the budget
A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop with a plan I loved on sight: four tufted linen floor seats of 28 x 64 in (71 x 163 cm), each in a different color, and four round cushions 18 in (46 cm) across to scatter among them. The question was the one everyone asks sooner or later. Could the whole mix fit a set budget?
Then came the choices. A standard 28 x 60 in (71 x 152 cm) seat already existed, only 4 in (10 cm) shorter, and it came with an offer. The four rounds were the surprise. Handmade and tufted, they came back at nearly what the rectangles cost, and the buyer found that too much.
Whatever the buyer decided next, the lesson stayed on my table. A small tufted round is not small work; the tufting and the curved seam are handwork at any diameter. When you mix colors across many pieces, pillows included, count the small pieces into the budget from the very first message.
On the cutting table: the leading lumbar
| Piece | Lumbar pillow, rectangle |
|---|---|
| Fabric | Striped cotton, black and cream wide stripe |
| Edge | Knife edge |
| Piping | None, so the stripe runs straight to the seam |
| Companions | Wine pinstripe, royal blue medium stripe and yellow wide stripe squares |
| Bedding | White linen duvet and white sleeping pillows |
| Spare covers | Covers-only orders possible, including partial sets |
| Matching bolsters | Same fabric and piping, such as 17.7 in long and 6 in across (45 x 15 cm) |
| Best for | A pale bed that can carry one graphic pattern |

Color is easier to settle in a conversation than on a screen. Tell the workshop about the room and the light it gets, and the fabric choice follows. — Élodie

Buyer questions: spare covers, stubborn creases, matching rolls
- A common question
Can I buy a second set of covers, or covers for just a few of the pieces?
The workshop's answerYes. There is a covers-only listing with no foam inside, so you can swap covers while one set is in the wash or change the color later. You can also order covers for only some pieces, such as just the two straight backrests, and the extra set can be in a different color.
- A common question
My new covers still show fold lines from shipping. Will they relax?
The workshop's answerYes. Creases from compressed shipping are normal and fade with time. To hurry them along, steam the covers or iron them carefully.
- A common question
Could you make round bolsters in the same fabric and piping as my seat cushion?
The workshop's answerYes. Cylinder bolsters can match the seat cushion's fabric and piping, for instance as armrests at each end of a bench; one pair was 17.7 in (45 cm) long and 6 in (15 cm) across. Place the main cushion order first, then ask for a custom link for the bolsters. For daybed bolsters, send every requirement, the measurements and a reference photo.
A lumbar pillow sits lowest on the bed, so give it the highest-contrast stripe and let the squares behind it step up from pinstripe to wide.

Questions buyers ask next
How many striped pillows can one bed carry?
Four can work when they follow an order. Keep the highest-contrast stripe in front on the lumbar, step the others from fine to wide, and keep the bedding and headboard neutral, as the white linen and walnut do here.
Should a striped lumbar pillow have piping?
Not necessarily. A knife edge with no piping lets a bold stripe run straight to the seam, which suits black and cream. Piping adds a frame, more useful on solid fabrics or when the outline needs to read from across the room.
Do the striped pillows on one bed need to share a color?
They need a shared neutral more than a shared color. Here white linen, white sleeping pillows and a walnut headboard surround four stripes, so wine, royal blue, yellow and black can all differ without looking collected by accident.
