A Reading by HanaKids' Floor Sofas & Play Couches

A mustard corduroy play sofa, a baby, and the finishing you cannot see

One round pillow set aside. A tower of blocks on the seat. The craft is in what holds still underneath.

With one round pillow set aside, the seat becomes a stage for building blocks.

The quick answer

The hand-finishing that matters on a kids floor sofa is mostly invisible: double-stitched seams, hidden zippers, foam wrapped in polyester fiber and cut slightly larger than its cover so each piece looks full, and corduroy left unpiped because the ribs already draw the edge. The foam is about 1.75 lb/ft³ (28 kg/m³), with 32 kg/m³ on request.

Read from a child's height

The photograph is taken low, at a child's height. That is the right height to judge a kids floor sofa.

A baby in a cream knit sits on the seat and builds. The seat is firm and flat enough to hold a tower of wooden blocks. One round mustard pillow has been set aside, and the gap it leaves is the invitation.

Two bolster arms close the open ends. They make a soft rail, low enough to climb over, high enough to lean on. Below the seat, the deep ochre base warms the gray-green wall.

The rest of the room stays light on purpose. White cloud and moon shapes on the wall. A pine book ledge. A white cubby with a teddy bear and more blocks. The pine toddler bed behind repeats the yellow undertone of the corduroy, and the jute herringbone rug and linen curtains keep everything soft and plain. Nothing in this kids' room competes with the child.

Children measure comfort with their whole body.

Five places where the play sofa and the room agree.

Pinned: Baby sitting on a mustard corduroy kids play sofa stacking wooden blocks, with one round pillow and two bolster arms
  1. Block tower on seat

A firm seat slab is flat enough for a baby to build on.

  2. Single round pillow

Leaving one pillow off opens the seat for play.

  3. Left bolster arm

The bolster gives a soft rail on the open side of the seat.

  4. Stacked base

Deep ochre on the base slabs warms the gray-green wall.

  5. Pine toddler bed

Pale pine repeats the yellow undertone of the corduroy.

Where the hands went

Corduroy on these pieces is made without piping. That is a design choice, not a shortcut. The ribs already draw the line, and a cord would only interrupt them.

The seams are double-stitched. The zippers are hidden, so the cover shows only cloth. Each foam piece is wrapped in polyester fiber wadding and cut slightly larger than its cover, which is why every edge looks full and square, and why fitting one takes two people.

The foam is a high-resilience cold foam, about 1.75 lb/ft³ (28 kg/m³), in a single density. It can be made about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) if you want more support. The cover is a plush polyester corduroy that washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle.

Corduroy is an indoor cloth, with no water or UV resistance. Keep it back from a sunny glass door.

How does your child use a sofa: to sit, to climb, or to build?

A real project

Linen asked to agree with velvet

A buyer in the US wanted a linen play couch in a color close to one of the velvets. The workshop suggested a 100% natural linen, and the buyer ordered samples before anything else.

Then came a drawing: six base cushions stacked in two layers, and three back cushions. The workshop said it could make it, tufted or plain, with one exception. The pillows under the seat could not be tufted in the shape drawn.

Samples first was the wise part. Linen and velvet take dye differently, so one color name can look like two colors.

The lesson: Order linen samples when matching a velvet color; the fibers take dye differently.

Buyer questions: colors, beds and boxes

  1. A common question

I clicked the wrong color. Can I change it after ordering?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, as long as production hasn't started. Buyers have switched brick to navy, white to brown, khaki to emerald, pink to anthracite and light to dark coffee; the workshop checks with the production team before confirming. If the order is already packed and leaving that day, the fallback is an extra cover set in the other color.

  2. A common question

What size bed does the floor sofa make: queen or king?

    The workshop's answer

The sofa measures 39 x 79 in (100 x 200 cm). Laid flat on the floor it becomes about 79 x 79 in (200 x 200 cm), which is king size. The corner version with the ottoman makes a bed larger than a king, with room for 2 adults and 2 children.

  3. A common question

Does the floor sofa come in one big box?

    The workshop's answer

No, it comes as three parcels: two roll packs of compressed, fully stuffed cushions and one small square box holding the metal bars. UPS carries the large parcels and FedEx the small one, so they often arrive on different days even though they ship together.

A kids floor sofa does not need every pillow in place; take one round pillow off the seat and it becomes a flat stage for building blocks.

Questions buyers ask next

Can a play couch be tufted?

Many pieces can be made tufted or plain. Tufting buttons are sewn by hand, and spare buttons come with tufted orders. Tufted pieces have no zipper, though, so they are wiped clean with a damp cloth rather than machine washed.

Is corduroy a practical fabric for a kids' room?

It is soft, plush and washable at 86°F (30°C), but it is indoor-only, with no water or UV resistance. For the heaviest daily use the workshop also suggests soft performance fabric or velvet, both durable and wipeable.

Why does the foam feel bigger than its cover?

Firm foam is cut slightly larger than the cover so the piece looks full and the corners stay square. That is also why putting it back after a wash is a two-person job; ask for a hand rather than forcing a corner.
