The Cutting Table · a question, worked through

How much does a custom trapezoid cushion cost?

There is no price list for a shape with four different sides. There is a method. It starts with your tape measure.

The quick answer

A custom trapezoid cushion has no fixed price: it is quoted from the length of every side (back, front and both angled sides), the thickness, the fabric and whether it is part of a set. It costs noticeably more than a rectangle of similar size because of the extra cutting and sewing. Send a labeled drawing and a photo of the space for a quote.

So what sets the number?

Four lengths, then three choices. The back edge, the front edge, and both angled sides. Then thickness, fabric, and whether the piece comes alone or with a set.

A trapezoid cushion costs more than a rectangle with the same footprint. The foam is not the reason. Every angled edge is an extra cut and an extra seam, and the cover has to follow them exactly.

The trapezoid calculator checks that your four sides make a real shape before you ask.

And if only one piece is the odd one?

Then it is quoted with its neighbors. Buyers have asked for three rectangular bench cushions and one trapezoid, all 3 in (7.5 cm) thick. Another paired a rectangle with an odd shape in houndstooth. Each came back as one quote, shipping included, in the shop's best fabric and foam. Processing on one of them was about 10 days.

A real project

One bench, four numbers

A buyer in the US had just built a bench and needed one cushion to follow it. 103 in (262 cm) along one edge. 56 in (142 cm) along the other. 34 in (86 cm) sides, 3 in (7.5 cm) thick. The reply was a quote for that single piece.

No price list was opened. The four numbers were the price list. That is how odd shapes work.

What to send with the question

  1. Measure all four sides

Back, front, and each angled side, with the unit labeled. The trapezoid measuring Pattern shows where the tape goes.

  2. Draw it and letter it

A plain sketch with each side marked A, B, C, D is enough.

  3. Photograph the space

The shop asks for a photo on every odd shape.

  4. Name thickness and fabric

Both change the quote. So does adding the rest of the set.

A trapezoid cushion costs more than a same-size rectangle because every angled side adds cutting and sewing.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

What would a trapezoid window seat cushion cost?

    The workshop's answer

It was quoted from its four sides: 68.25 in (173 cm) at the back, 113.75 in (289 cm) at the front, and angled sides of 33.75 in (86 cm) and 33 in (84 cm). Those measurements set the price.

  2. A common question

Can you quote a set of bench cushions where one is a trapezoid?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Three 24 x 36 in (61 x 91 cm) cushions plus one trapezoid with a 41 in (104 cm) top, a 21 in (53 cm) bottom and sides of 9 in (23 cm) and 24 in (61 cm), all 3 in thick, were quoted together as one set.

  3. A common question

Can you price a rectangle and an odd-shaped cushion in houndstooth together?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. One such pair was quoted together, shipping included, in the shop's best fabric and foam, with about 10 days of processing that time. For the odd shape the shop asked for every side length and a photo of the space.

  4. A common question

My seat has one angled end, like under the stairs. Is that a trapezoid?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Order on the custom-shape listing using your longest edge and deepest depth, and upload a drawing showing the angle with all four sides measured. The cushion is cut exactly to it.

Questions buyers ask next

Why is a trapezoid cushion more expensive than a rectangle?

Because of the extra cutting and sewing. Each angled side is its own cut, and the cover has to follow it exactly. That is why the quote rises even when the footprint matches a rectangle of similar size.

Is shipping included in a trapezoid cushion quote?

It can be. In mixed-set quotes, such as a rectangle and an odd shape in the same fabric, shipping was included in the figure the shop sent. Ask the shop to confirm when you request your quote.

Does an angled corner bench always need a trapezoid?

No. At a 90° corner, one long and one short rectangle fit better and cost less. Mitered 45° joins, or corners that are not 90°, become trapezoids and are ordered with a full drawing.
