A mustard trapezoid bench cushion built for long afternoons in the bay
Solid mustard, self piping, four pillows stepping dark to light. Nate reads a bay window seat for the hours people actually spend on it, and checks the geometry that makes those hours possible.

The quick answer
A trapezoid bench cushion built for long sitting is cut from the exact top, bottom, angled-side and depth measurements of the bay, and each angled side must measure longer than the straight depth. Keep the seat one solid color with self piping, then add back pillows and a lumbar so you can lean, shift and stay for hours.
A backrest made of pillows, a seat made of one color
Most bay window seats come without a backrest. Fine for a ten-minute coffee; a design flaw for a three-hour novel. On this bay, the pillows are the backrest.
The cushion is a trapezoid bench cushion in a mustard linen-look weave, box edge, cut to a white cabinet seat, its angled ends following the window walls. The piping is self piping, so the angled corner reads as one clean block of yellow. A contrast welt on a color this strong would draw every angle twice. Self piping draws it once. Cloudy daylight, flat and even, is the fairest test a strong color gets, and the mustard still reads warm.
The pillows step down in value from left to right. Olive velvet goes first, the heaviest color on the seat; without it, the yellow floats. Cream boucle changes texture, not color. Then a beige block print and a faded block-print lumbar. The lumbar is the long-sitting piece: it sits low, at the small of your back, where you press against the window wall after an hour with a book or a laptop.
The taupe waffle throw drapes over the front edge where the backs of your knees meet the box. Taupe, not white, so it calms the yellow. The mug on two books is the side table this bay doesn't have. Brass bar pulls repeat the cushion's gold, so seat and storage read as one piece. The wool and jute rug catches your feet when you swing them down.
Copy it in four moves: one solid seat with self piping, the darkest pillow at the end, one lumbar, a throw a step darker than white. More angled seats live in trapezoid cushions, and the palette logic suits any living room cushion.

Pinned by Nate: five coordinates on one bay seat
Five pins run from the olive velvet anchor and the block-print lumbar to the waffle throw, the self-piped angled end and the brass pulls below.

- Olive velvet pillow
The darkest pillow sits at the start of the row to anchor the yellow.
- Block-print lumbar
A faded print adds pattern without fighting the solid mustard.
- Waffle throw
Taupe rather than white softens the yellow where it drapes over the front edge.
- Self-piped angled end
Self piping keeps the angled corner one clean block of color.
- Brass pulls
Brass hardware repeats the golden tone of the cushion below it.

The angled side that came in shorter than the depth
A buyer got in touch about a wide angled window seat. The numbers: top 57.9 in (147 cm), bottom 89.8 in (228 cm), depth 16.9 in (43 cm), and a left slanted side of 16.9 in (43 cm).
Before cutting, the workshop drew it. The drawing would not close. A slanted side is always longer than the straight depth. Angles are just lengths in disguise, and this one was hiding a typo.
The workshop asked. The buyer measured again: both sides were 22.8 in (58 cm). The bottom is 31.9 in (81 cm) longer than the top, so each end steps out 15.9 in (40.5 cm). Square the side, subtract the square of the step, take the root, and the true depth comes out at about 16.3 in (41.5 cm).
That check held dispatch by one day. The cushion was cut right the first time and photographed before it shipped. A day for a correct cushion is a trade I will take every time, partner. The trapezoid cushion calculator and the trapezoid measuring Pattern run the same check before you order.
On the cutting table: a mustard bay seat for long sitting
| Piece | Trapezoid bench cushion for a bay window seat |
|---|---|
| Edge | Box edge, angled ends following the window walls |
| Fabric | Mustard linen-look, one solid color |
| Piping | Self piping on top and bottom seams |
| Measurements to send | Top, bottom, both angled sides, straight depth |
| Sanity check | Each angled side longer than the depth |
| Worked example | Top 57.9 in, bottom 89.8 in, sides 22.8 in, depth 16.3 in (147 / 228 / 58 / 41.5 cm) |
| Cover | Removable, hidden zipper; ask for the side you want |
| Best for | Reading, laptop work and long afternoons in a bay |

Buyer questions: exact sizes, washable covers and metric quotes
- A common question
Should I send the exact size of my window seat, or take off about 3/8 in (1 cm) to allow for variation?
The workshop's answerSend the exact measurements of the space and don't reduce them. The workshop reviews your diagram before the order is placed, and its production team decides any allowance or adjustment.
- A common question
Can every fabric take a zipper, so the covers come off for washing?
The workshop's answerYes. All fabrics can take a zipper, and every foam cushion comes with a removable zippered cover you can wash. The zipper is hidden for a clean look, and you can ask for it on a particular side, for example the 23 in (58 cm) side.
- A common question
Can you quote a custom cushion from metric measurements, like 19¾ x 63 in (50 x 160 cm)?
The workshop's answerYes. Metric sizes are quoted the same way as inch sizes; ask for shipping to be shown on the quote. Sizes quoted this way have included a 19.7 x 63 in (50 x 160 cm) linen cushion and a 68.9 x 23.6 in (175 x 60 cm) bench cushion.
On a trapezoid bench cushion, each angled side is always longer than the straight depth; a side that measures shorter means one number is wrong.

Questions buyers ask next
What pillows make a bay window seat comfortable for long reading sessions?
Pillows that do the backrest's job. Put a firm, darker pillow at the end of the row, add one or two softer ones, and finish with a lumbar that sits low at the small of your back. A throw over the front edge softens the spot where your knees bend.
Why choose self piping on a bold cushion color like mustard?
Self piping is cut from the cushion fabric, so the edge and the body read as one block. On a strong color, a contrast welt would outline every angle of a trapezoid and compete with the pillows. Self piping leaves the contrast to the pillows.
How can I tell whether my trapezoid seat measurements add up?
Compare each angled side with the straight depth; the side must be longer. On a symmetric seat, halve the difference between bottom and top to get the step at each end. The side squared minus the step squared should equal the depth squared.
