The Cutting Table · compared on the table

Can I stack two floor cushions for a higher seat and lay them flat as a mattress?

Also asked as:Stack them for a higher seat.Bottom part double so it's a mattress too.

Two layers, not one block. That is the whole idea, and the linen floor sofa already works this way.

The quick answer

Yes: order a second seat cushion of the same thickness, or one thicker cushion, and the layers stay separate pieces, not sewn together. Stack them to sit higher; lay them side by side as a mattress. The linen floor sofa already works this way on a double 4 + 4 in (10 + 10 cm) base. Extra layers come through a separate listing.

Why loose layers do more

A sewn block has one job. Two loose layers have two.

Stacked, they lift you off the floor. Apart, they make a bed for a guest. Nothing to unzip. Nothing to fold but the cushions themselves.

Before you order, check the height with the seat height calculator. The floor sofa sleeping pattern covers bed size and firmness, and the floor cushions atlas shows the shapes. The sizes above are for the linen version.

Height is a feeling. A bed is a floor, made kind. Two layers hold both.

Two 6 in (15 cm) floor mattresses do two jobs: stacked, they make a higher seat; laid side by side, they make a bed.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

What sizes does the linen floor sofa come in, and does the bottom layer come apart?

    The workshop's answer

Three widths: 47, 59 and 71 in (120, 150 and 180 cm), all 27 in (70 cm) deep on a double 4 + 4 in (10 + 10 cm) base. The two layers are separate, so they work together or apart.

  2. A common question

Can the bottom cushion be doubled so I can sit on it and also sleep on it?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. An extra layer is added through a separate listing, for example for a 55 x 27.5 in (140 x 70 cm) floor cushion. The layers are separate pieces, so you can stack them as a seat or lay them out as a mattress.

  3. A common question

Can two floor mattresses stack into a seat and unfold into a bed?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, the workshop confirmed that works as a bed. Two 23.5 x 59 in (60 x 150 cm) floor mattresses with one backrest and two armrests in linen were quoted as a set. Standard thickness is 6 in (15 cm); 8 in (20 cm) is available.

Questions buyers ask next

Are the two layers sewn or zipped together?

Neither. They are separate pieces, not sewn together, so each layer can be stacked, moved or laid out on its own. The extra layer is ordered separately.

How thick is a floor mattress?

6 in (15 cm) is standard, with 8 in (20 cm) as an option. Two stacked mattresses of the same thickness make a seat 12 or 16 in (30 or 40 cm) high.

Is there a floor sofa with no legs or frame at all?

Yes. The modular corduroy floor sofa is all cushion and fabric: 78.5 in (199 cm) wide, 39 in (99 cm) deep and 29 in (74 cm) high, with a 14 in (36 cm) seat height.
