Can I buy just the seat cushion, or add extra back and arm pillows?

Yes to both: the seat cushion can be ordered alone for less than the set with a backrest, and extra backrests, bolsters or pillows can be added by custom order. Seat-only orders have included 36 × 73 in (91 × 185 cm) and about 67 × 39 1/2 in (170 × 100 cm). On armless floor sofas, small pillows double as arm and back support.

Seat only is a complete order

A floor cushion without a backrest is simply the base. It is quoted on its own and costs less than the set; in one quote, about two-thirds of the price with a backrest.

It suits a seat with a wall behind it. Or a window. Some people lean on the wall. Some sit cross-legged and need no back. Height is a feeling, and a low seat without a back feels open.

Ways to add support, now or later

  • An extra backrest, by custom order. One set was a 20 × 40 in (51 × 102 cm) base with two 40 in (102 cm) backrests.
  • Bolsters, which came with that same set as a pair.
  • Small pillows at the sides and back of an armless floor sofa.
  • A second seat cushion of the same thickness, stacked for a higher seat or laid flat as a mattress.
  • Metal support bars behind the backrests, which keep them from sliding back or tipping when you lean.
A real project

An armless floor sofa and a movie night

A buyer wrote in about a floor sofa with no armrests at either end. The wish was simple: to get comfortable enough to watch a movie.

The answer was not a different sofa. The workshop offered to add a few small pillows to the order, to use as arm and back support. Loose pillows go where the body wants them, and move when it changes its mind.

Less furniture. Pillows where they are needed. Better sitting.

On an armless floor sofa, a few small pillows can serve as arms and a backrest, and they move wherever the seat needs them.

    Usually yes. Ottomans have been made narrower, 39 × 31 in instead of 39 × 39 in, or cut to an exact wall width. One-piece models can't be resized.

Can two seat cushions be stacked for a higher seat?

Yes. Order a second seat cushion of the same thickness, or one thicker cushion. The layers stay separate, so you can stack them or lay them side by side as a mattress.

What keeps a floor sofa backrest from tipping over?

Metal support bars. Four free-standing frames, two at the sides and two at the back, sit behind the backrests. They aren't attached to the cushions, and they stay put once you sit.
