The Cutting Table · a question, worked through

Only part of my sofa arrived. Is the rest still coming?

Tracking said delivered. The porch had one box. Friend, it's one of the most common sofa scares, and it has usually ended within a day or two.

The quick answer

Most likely, yes: a floor sofa ships as several parcels, and on past orders they arrived a day or two apart. A single sofa is typically 2 roll packs of cushions plus 1 small box of metal bars. If a box shows no movement for a couple of days, ask the workshop to trace it and get its next step in writing.

Key facts

  • A single floor sofa ships as 2 roll packs of cushions plus 1 small box of metal bars, or 3 rolls and 1 box.
  • A corner sofa set can ship as 4 roll packs.
  • An ottoman, armrests or angled pieces add parcels; large sets reach 5 or 6.
  • Couriers sometimes separate boxes in local sorting, so parcels shipped together arrive on different days.
  • Parcels may share one master tracking number or carry separate ones.
  • If tracking stalls, call the carrier and tell the workshop; one buyer received 6 replacement metal end bars.
  • A sofa roll pack is roughly 12 x 12 x 43–47 in (30 x 30 x 110–120 cm) and weighs about 18 to 33 lb (8–15 kg); the bar box is about 16 x 16 x 2 in (40 x 40 x 5 cm).

“Tracking says delivered. Where's the rest?”

Still on the truck, most likely. A single sofa leaves as 2 roll packs of cushions and 1 small box of metal support bars, sometimes 3 rolls and 1 box. A corner set can be 4 roll packs; add an ottoman, armrests or angled pieces and you're at 5 or 6 parcels.

Couriers split them in local sorting. So tracking can read 'delivered' when 1 of 3 boxes is on your step.

“Only the metal bars came. Is that normal?”

Very. The bars travel in their own small box and often land first. Seat cushions have followed the same day or a day or two later, even when everything shipped together. Some sets move under one master tracking number, some under separate ones. The support bars Pattern shows where each bar goes once the rest turns up.

Walk the deck before you worry

  1. Count the parcels on the tracking

See how many packages it lists. Separate numbers mean separate journeys.

  2. Check the usual hiding spots

Neighbors, the building's package room, the garage.

  3. Give it a day or two

Parcels shipped together often arrive on different days. Rain doesn't negotiate, and neither does a sorting hub.

  4. Call the carrier as the recipient

Contacting FedEx or UPS yourself, or your local FedEx office, often speeds a stalled box along.

  5. Tell the workshop if a box stalls

No movement for a couple of days? The workshop contacts the carrier and opens a case if needed; in past cases the missing pieces were resent.

“And if a box is really lost?”

Then photograph what did arrive and message the workshop. If the carrier can't find the parcel, the workshop's reply says what it will send; one buyer in the US had 6 replacement metal end bars on the way. Once everything's in, give the cushions time to recover from the roll pack; the first 72 hours Pattern covers that. How many parcels does your tracking show right now? More at modular floor sofas.

If tracking says delivered but only 1 of 3 sofa boxes arrived, count the parcels on the tracking first; couriers often split them in local sorting.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Only the box of metal bars showed up. Where's the rest of my sofa?

    The workshop's answer

The sofa ships as several packages: two vacuum roll packs for the cushions, a small box for the bars, and separate parcels for any ottoman or angled pieces. FedEx often delivers them on different days, sometimes under separate tracking numbers. Wait a day or two; when a piece really was missing, the workshop sent it again.

  2. A common question

Tracking says delivered, but only part of my floor sofa is here. Is more coming?

    The workshop's answer

Most likely, yes. A single sofa comes as 2 roll packs of cushions plus 1 small box of metal bars, and they aren't always delivered together. On past orders the rest arrived the same day or within a couple of days, and the workshop follows the FedEx tracking to confirm.

  3. A common question

Some of our boxes arrived and some didn't. Is another one coming?

    The workshop's answer

Larger orders ship in several packages, and separate items can have their own tracking. If a parcel is lost, the workshop can open a case with the carrier; one buyer received 6 replacement metal end bars. Contacting the carrier yourself as the recipient often speeds things up.

Questions buyers ask next

How many boxes does a floor sofa ship in?

It depends on the set. A single sofa is usually 2 roll packs plus 1 small box of metal bars, or 3 rolls and 1 box. A corner set can be 4 roll packs, and an ottoman, armrests or angled pieces add more, up to 5 or 6 parcels.

Why do the metal bars often arrive before the cushions?

The bars travel in their own small box, separate from the bulky roll packs, and couriers often move parcels on different schedules in local sorting. The bar box frequently lands first; the cushions have typically followed the same day or a day or two later.

Should I contact the carrier or the workshop first?

Both help. Calling FedEx or UPS as the recipient often speeds a stalled parcel, and the workshop can open a case on its side. If a box still can't be found after a couple of days without movement, photograph what did arrive and send the photos to the workshop with the tracking numbers.
