The Cutting Table · a question, worked through

Will the non-slip bottom damage my wooden bench?

Two worries usually arrive in the same message: the finish on the wood, and whether the grip can stop short of the edges. One of them is easy.

The quick answer

No, a non-slip cushion base won't damage wood, because it is a fabric backing, not an adhesive or a rubber coating. It is safe on wooden benches and on an heirloom chest. It always covers the entire underside: a grip panel in the middle with a 4 in (10 cm) fabric border isn't possible. It sits underneath, so nobody sees it once the cushion is down.

“Will it mark the finish?”

Right, then. The non-slip base is a fabric backing. There is no glue on it and no rubber coating, which is why the workshop calls it safe on wooden benches, and why a buyer in the US could put one on a family heirloom chest without losing sleep.

The flaking stories you may have read belong to a different product: the separate non-slip pieces of a floor sofa that went through a washing machine. A bench cushion backing is another animal. What's under yours, dear: painted pine, oiled oak, or a cedar chest with a history?

“Could the grip stop 4 inches from the edge?”

No. I understand the instinct, since a border feels tidier. But the non-slip always covers the entire underside, and a panel with a 4 in (10 cm) fabric frame around it can't be made.

It also wouldn't buy you anything. The backing sits face down, so once the cushion is on the bench it is invisible. The choice is simple: full non-slip base, or none at all. If yours sits on a storage bench or blanket chest, the same rule holds: whole underside or nothing.

Three ways to keep a bench cushion from wandering

Partial grip isn't on the menu: a non-slip base covers the entire underside of the cushion, and a 4 in (10 cm) fabric border can't be made.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Would the non-slip bottom hurt the wood on my bench, and does it cover the whole base?

    The workshop's answer

No harm to the wood: it's a fabric backing, not an adhesive or rubber coating, so it's safe on wooden benches. It covers the entire base of the cushion, can't be made as a strip with a fabric border, and isn't visible underneath.

  2. A common question

Could the grip sit only in the middle, with plain fabric around the edges?

    The workshop's answer

No. The non-slip always covers the whole base; a 4 in (10 cm) fabric border isn't possible. It sits on the underside where no one sees it, or you can skip it entirely.

  3. A common question

Does the non-slip bottom come standard, or is it extra?

    The workshop's answer

It's an optional add-on, and the cost scales with cushion size. Write 'non-slip base' and your exact size in personalization, and the workshop includes it in your quote or sends a link for the difference.

  4. A common question

Could you use velcro instead of ties?

    The workshop's answer

Usually ties or a non-slip bottom are offered instead. Velcro tabs and snaps aren't made, but two-sided velcro strips have been added on request at extra cost; ask in the personalization box and wait for confirmation.

Questions buyers ask next

Is the non-slip base rubber-backed?

No. It is a fabric backing with no rubber coating and no adhesive, which is why the workshop calls it safe for wooden benches. Reports of rubbery flakes relate to floor sofa non-slip pieces that went through a washing machine, a different product.

Will I see the non-slip base from the front of the bench?

No. It sits entirely on the underside, so once the cushion is in place it is hidden. That is also why a decorative fabric border around the grip would add nothing you could see.

Can two bench cushions be kept from drifting apart?

Yes. Ties on the corners or the meeting edges let you join two bench cushions end to end, or a seat and back laid flat. Specify ties on every cushion in the order so each piece carries its half.
