A Reading by MaggieBench Cushions

A charcoal tweed bedroom bench cushion that stays where you left it

Maggie reads a lamplit walnut bench and gets straight to the question every bedroom bench asks: what keeps the cushion put?

A textured charcoal-and-mustard weave gives a walnut bedroom bench some weight, lightened by two off-white velvet pillows and a glowing bedside lamp.

The quick answer

For a bedroom bench cushion on a smooth wood top, a non-slip base is the simplest way to stop sliding: the whole underside is made in grip material. Ties suit frames you can tie around. Keep the zipper along one edge turned to the wall, and if you want two colors, put the second on the side band.

Sat on in bursts, pelted with handbags

A bedroom bench cushion gets sat on in short bursts, to pull on socks or lace a boot, and has handbags flung at it the rest of the day. No seat in the house goes walkabout more often.

This one sits on a walnut bench against a warm beige wall, beside the bed and a lamplit nightstand. The cushion is a firm, unpiped box in a nubby charcoal weave flecked with mustard. Unpiped is the right choice here. On a tweed this rough, a welt argues with the weave, and a clean box edge softens the hard walnut frame without fuss. A straight welt is a kind of honesty, and so is knowing when to leave one off.

The color is practical first and pretty second. Mustard flecks in charcoal hide the marks where bags, jeans and the odd damp towel land. Light from the bedside lamp, through its cream shade, finds the mustard and warms it, and the walnut picks up the same glow. By day the charcoal reads cooler and quieter.

Two off-white velvet pillows keep the corner from going dark, and their smooth pile is the counterpoint to the rough seat. The books on the nightstand have neutral spines, so nothing competes. The faded vintage rug softens the wood, and the cream linen on the bed repeats the pillows.

Now, dear, the fastening question. I once put ties on a bench with a solid box base. They hung there like apron strings for a year before I admitted it. The checklist below is what I use now; the longer reasoning is in stopping a bench cushion from sliding and where the zipper goes. Which kind of frame is under your cushion?

The fastening checklist for a bedroom bench

  • Smooth wood top, like this walnut: choose the non-slip base. The whole underside is made in grip material, not strips, and you select it in the personalization options.
  • Open frame or slats: ties work. Cut them from the cover fabric so they disappear, one pair near each end.
  • Solid base with nothing to tie around: skip ties entirely. They will only dangle.
  • Zipper: it runs along one edge. Turn that edge to the wall and nobody sees it.
  • Two fabrics: keep top and bottom the same and put the second color on the side band. A two-tone top and bottom shows the zipper right where the colors meet.
A real project

A 6-inch-deep stair cushion that waited too long in its bag

A buyer ordered a very narrow cushion: 34 x 6 x 4 in (86 x 15 x 10 cm), black linen with matching piping, for a small spot on a staircase. The proportions were odd enough that the workshop asked two questions before cutting: was the length really 34 in and not 36, and where would it go? Good. I'd have asked the same, and asked it twice.

It shipped in a busy stretch, with more than 200 orders in production, vacuum-packed as usual. The buyer then sent it on, still sealed, to another home far away. The workshop's advice: open the vacuum pack as soon as possible so the foam can regain its shape. The longer a cushion waits compressed, the longer it takes to recover.

The first 72 hours Pattern has the steps. More narrow and odd-sized seats live among the bench cushions, and the rest of the room in bedroom cushions.

Buyer questions: creases, samples, and fabrics off the menu

  1. A common question

My cushion came with a crease right down the middle. Should I iron it out?

    The workshop's answer

No ironing needed. Creases from compressed packing relax on their own within 7 to 10 days.

  2. A common question

What does the 'fabric sample' choice in the size menu mean?

    The workshop's answer

It's a fabric sample, so you can see and feel the colors before you order the cushions.

  3. A common question

Are the fabrics shown in the listing the only ones I can pick?

    The workshop's answer

No. The listing shows the most popular, most-ordered fabrics. Tell the workshop the material or look you're after and it can offer options beyond the listing.

A two-tone bench cushion should get its second color on the side band, not the bottom face, because the zipper edge shows where top and bottom meet.

Questions buyers ask next

How do I stop a bedroom bench cushion from sliding?

On a smooth wood top, order the non-slip base, which covers the whole underside in grip material. On an open or slatted frame, ties cut from the cover fabric work well. Skip ties on a solid base.

Which way should the zipper face on a bench cushion?

The zipper runs along one edge, so turn that edge to the wall or the back of the bench. From the room side you then see only clean box edges.

Why pair velvet pillows with a tweed bench cushion?

Smooth velvet pile contrasts with a rough weave, and pale pillows keep a dark seat from making the corner heavy. Under warm lamplight the off-white velvet also bounces light back onto the bench.

Is a textured weave practical on a bedroom bench?

Yes. Flecks in a nubby weave, like mustard in charcoal, hide the small marks left where bags and clothes land every day, while a flat pale fabric would show them quickly.
