The Cutting Table · a question, worked through

Does the modular floor sofa have piping or a flat seam?

The listing photos don't all agree, and I understand the squint. Here is the standard edge, the exceptions, and how to ask so nobody has to guess.

The quick answer

A modular floor sofa comes with a flat seam by default, with no raised piping or welt, and every piece, ottoman and backrests included, is sewn to match. A listing photo with a framed edge may show a different product. If you want piping, write it in the personalization box and wait for the workshop to confirm that listing allows it.

"The photos look different. Which one do I get?"

The flat seam. On a modular floor sofa the cushions are closed with a plain seam, no raised cord, and the ottoman and backrests are sewn the same way so the set reads as one sofa.

The odd photo out usually isn't lying, it's just someone else's sofa: a picture with a framed edge can show a different product. I have misread a listing photo myself, and it cost me a weekend with a seam ripper. Right, then: ask.

"Can I have piping anyway?"

Sometimes, and here the answer differs by listing. On one listing a welt or flange edge was offered on request; on another the answer was that there is one finish only, the edge on the brick-colored sofa. So confirm per listing, in writing, before you pay.

Which edge suits a low sofa for you, crisp or soft? Piping, matching or none lays out the looks.

What to write in the personalization box

  • Edge: flat seam on every piece, or a request for piping, with a line asking the workshop to confirm.
  • Pillows: "no contrast trim" if you want the black edge left off.
  • If piping is confirmed, both fabric codes, for example Body: L-06, Piping: 929.
  • Color from the chart; the curved sofa in teddy bouclé comes in cream or white too.

Every piece of a modular floor sofa, ottoman and backrests included, is sewn with the same flat seam, so the whole set reads as one sofa.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Will my floor sofa have a flat seam or a piped edge? Your photos differ.

    The workshop's answer

By default the cushions come without the raised edge, a flat seam, and every piece, ottoman and backrests too, is sewn to match. Write your preference in the personalization box.

  2. A common question

Some photos show stitched trim on the edges and others a hidden seam. Can I choose?

    The workshop's answer

On that listing, no: there is one finish. The photo with a different edge was another product, and every sofa on the listing has the edge shown on the brick-colored sofa.

  3. A common question

Could the curved sofa be cream or white, with the pillows minus the black trim?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The fabric in the photos is teddy bouclé, and any color from the chart works. The throw pillows can be made without the black trim.

Questions buyers ask next

Does piping cost more than a flat seam on a cushion?

No. Piping is a style choice at the same price, and roughly half of orders take it. Piping gives crisp, tailored edges; a flat seam keeps them soft and clean.

Is a welt the same thing as piping?

Yes. Both names mean the thin fabric-covered cord sewn into a cushion's edge seams, sometimes called trim. It can match the cushion fabric or contrast with it.

Can floor sofa piping be a different color from the body?

Where piping is offered, yes: it can be cut from any chart color at no extra cost. For a quiet outline, pick a code one shade darker than the body, like L-44 with L-43.
