A teal-ended velvet floor sofa by an oak bookcase, read for its finishing
The books supply the pattern, so the sofa keeps one accent. What holds it together is quieter: seams, pile and the ends of a bolster.
The quick answer
A velvet floor sofa looks hand-finished when its two colors meet on a straight seam, the pile runs the same way on every piece, and the box edges stay clean without piping. This cream sofa with teal ends does all three, and lets a full oak bookcase carry the room's pattern so the sofa needs only one accent color.
One accent against a wall of books
A full bookcase is already a pattern. Hundreds of spines, every color at once. So the floor sofa keeps to one accent: teal, on the ends.
The rest is cream velvet, sitting low on a pale plank floor under a tall window. Clear daylight falls across it without glare. A low oak coffee table holds magazines, a ceramic bowl and a mug at the right height for floor seating. A monstera in a ceramic pot stands on the window side, a darker green beside the teal, balancing the weight of the shelves.
The teal-capped bolster sits at the bookcase end. That leaves the long run of the seat free for lying down with a book. It is a reading room that happens to have a sofa in it.
What already carries the pattern in your room?

Where the handwork shows
Craft on a floor sofa is quiet. You find it where two things meet.
Where teal meets cream. A two-color piece is sewn, not dyed. The seam between the colors has to run straight across every end, at the same height on the base and on the backrest. A wobble there is visible from across the room.
The pile. Velvet looks lighter or darker depending on the direction of its pile. Cut every panel the same way round and the cream reads as one color, not a patchwork. There is more on shading in velvet pile and care.
No piping. The box edges here are plain. With no welt to hide behind, the corners have to be square on their own.
The bolster ends. The teal caps sit flat and square to the cream body. On a bolster, that is where a hurried seam shows first.
Leave a hand's width of floor. A low sofa needs a little empty space around it to look intended.
One accent. One seam height. One direction of pile.
Two pallet couches that become one bed
A first-time buyer wrote to the workshop about a new apartment. She is 5 ft 3 in (160 cm) tall and planned two floor couches on wooden pallets, pushed together at night as a double bed. She was unsure of the measurements.
The workshop suggested 63 x 27 1/2 in (160 x 70 cm) for each couch, one of its most popular sizes. Side by side, the pair makes a sleeping surface 63 in (160 cm) long and 55 in (140 cm) wide. She planned to save up and order when ready.
For a floor couch that doubles as a bed, start from the sleeper's height, then add a little legroom if the floor allows. The rest follows from there. Sleeping on a floor sofa goes further.
- Sizes
- 2 x 63 x 27 1/2 in (2 x 160 x 70 cm)
The lesson: Size a sleeping floor couch to the sleeper's height plus a little legroom.
Questions about sizes, sets and totals
- A common question
What do the size numbers mean, for example 28 x 52 inches?
The workshop's answerThe first number is the depth, front to back, and the second is the length. So 28 x 52 means 28 in deep and 52 in long, which works as a small two-person loveseat.
- A common question
Does the corner teddy sofa come with the ottoman?
The workshop's answerYes. The corner teddy sofa listing includes the ottoman.
- A common question
Can I get a total for an 18 x 36 inch tufted floor cushion in lavender velvet before I order?
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop quoted that exact piece, 18 x 36 in (46 x 91 cm), tufted, in lavender velvet, in the chat before the order went in, so the buyer knew the total up front.

Questions buyers ask next
How do I keep velvet one shade across every piece of a floor sofa?
Ask for every panel to be cut with the pile running the same way. Velvet shifts lighter or darker with pile direction, so panels cut in mixed directions read as patchwork, especially in clear daylight from a tall window.
Why leave the piping off a two-color velvet floor sofa?
Without piping, the edge is simply the fold of the velvet, which suits low, modern rooms and keeps a two-color piece from gaining a third line. It asks more of the maker, because square corners have nothing to hide behind.
What size floor couch works as half of a double bed on pallets?
One buyer planned two couches at 63 x 27 1/2 in (160 x 70 cm) each, one of the workshop's most popular sizes. Pushed together side by side, they make a 63 x 55 in (160 x 140 cm) sleeping surface.
