The Cutting Table · a checklist answer

How do I order back cushions to go with my bench cushion?

Also asked as:I don't see where backrests are sold separately. How do I add these to my order?

A backrest is its own cushion with its own measure. Put it in the cart like one, and label it so nobody at the cutting table has to guess.

The quick answer

To order back cushions with a bench cushion, add each backrest to the cart as a separate item from the same listing as the seat, at its own size. In the personalization box, write the exact size, the fabric code and the word “backrest.” Backrests can be shorter than the seat, and conflicting sizes on one item are confirmed before cutting.

Key facts

  • Each backrest is a separate cart item from the seat cushion's listing.
  • Write the size, the fabric code and “backrest” or “backrest pillow” in the personalization box.
  • If a back and a seat piece share a size, order two of that size and note which is the back.
  • On the bench-with-backrest listing, backrests are included; give each backrest's size in the notes.
  • A backrest can be shorter than its seat: 36.5 in (93 cm) on a 47 in (120 cm) seat.
  • One cart item carrying two sets of measurements is paused until you confirm.

The back-cushion checklist

  • Open the same listing you used for the seat cushion.
  • Add each backrest as its own cart item, at its own size.
  • In the personalization box, write the exact size, the fabric code and the word “backrest.”
  • If a back matches a seat piece's size, order two of that size and say which one is the back.
  • Keep one set of measurements per cart item, never two.
  • Check the height: about 16 in (40 cm) is the standard backrest.

Why each backrest gets its own line

Every cushion is cut on its own, so every cushion needs its own line: one size, one fabric code, one name. A seam is a promise, and the note beside it is where the promise starts.

When one cart item carries two sets of sizes, nobody can tell which you meant, so the order waits until you confirm. Label it plainly and it goes straight to the table. The backrest cushions hub shows the shapes, the personalization note pattern shows what to write, and the bench cushion builder lets you try the proportions first.

How long is the wall behind your bench, and does the back need to stop short of a window or a door?

A real project

A camper bench with short backs

A buyer fitting out a camper van wanted backrests shorter than the seats: a 36.5 in (93 cm) back on a 47 x 23.5 in (120 x 60 cm) seat, and a 23 in (58 cm) back on a 23 x 24 in (58 x 61 cm) seat. The bench-with-backrest listing handled it, my friend. Backrests come included in any size there, and each backrest's size went into the notes.

A bench backrest doesn't have to match the seat's length: a 36.5 in back on a 47 in seat is a normal order, sized in the note.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

How do I add backrest cushions to my bench cushion order?

    The workshop's answer

Add each piece to the cart separately from the same listing, and for each one write the exact size and fabric code in the personalization box, adding “backrest pillow” for the back pieces.

  2. A common question

How do I order backrests to match an outdoor bench cushion I already bought?

    The workshop's answer

Order from the same listing. Add the backrest pieces at their size, for example two cushions at about 16 x 20 in (40 x 50 cm) in the same fabric code, and note that they are backrests.

  3. A common question

Can I order a back cushion together with my seat cushion?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, as a separate item: add the backrest at its own size through the same listing. If it has the same dimensions as a seat piece, order two of that size and note which is the back. One cushion with two sets of measurements is paused until you confirm.

  4. A common question

Can a corner floor cushion get back cushions too?

    The workshop's answer

    Yes, one or two matching backrests, for example a 38 x 16 x 4 in (97 x 40 x 10 cm) back on one side of a 38 x 38 in (97 x 97 cm) cushion, ordered with the custom option for a set quote.

Questions buyers ask next

What height works for a bench backrest?

The standard backrest is about 16 in (40 cm) high and 4 in (10 cm) thick. The workshop recommends 16 in over 12 in (30 cm) for back support, and custom heights such as 14 to 15 in are no problem.

Is there a special listing for a van or camper bench?

Van and camper bench orders have used the bench-with-backrest listing, where backrests are included in any size. On standard listings, backrests are added to the cart as separate items.

Should the backrest be as thick as the seat?

It doesn't have to be. Many buyers pair a thicker, firmer seat with thinner backs, such as 4 in (10 cm) backs on an 8 in (20 cm) seat, which also costs less.
