The Cutting Table · a question, worked through

Does a floor sofa need to be against a wall, or can it stand in the middle of a room?

It depends on what stands behind the backrest: metal bars, or nothing. Here are the follow-ups, in the order people asked them.

The quick answer

The modular teddy floor sofa doesn't need a wall: metal bars run along both sides and behind the backrests, so it stands freely and you can lean back in the middle of a room. The tufted floor sofa is different. It has no built-in back support and is designed to lean against a wall.

“Can it stand in the middle of the room?”

The modular teddy floor sofa can. Metal bars run along both sides and behind the backrests, so you can lean back with open floor behind you. The workshop can send photos of the back if you want to see the bars first.

A sofa away from the wall changes a small room. The walls stay empty. The room breathes. Read how the support bars fit together.

“What comes with the convertible?”

The teddy convertible sofa bed stands on four metal bars at the sides and back. The backrest cushions and bars are included. The small pillows and cylindrical cushions in the photos are not.

The two seat mattresses are separate pieces. Opened as a bed, the sofa measures 63 x 78.7 in (160 x 200 cm). Plan the floor for the bed, not the sofa; the floor sofa buying guide helps.

“And the tufted one?”

The tufted floor sofa is a different piece. It needs no assembly and has no built-in back support. It is designed to lean against a wall, as it does in the photos. Put it where a wall can do the work of the bars; the tufted floor couch sizes show the sets.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Does the floor sofa have a support bar for the back, or must it sit against a wall?

    The workshop's answer

It has metal bars on both sides and along the back, so it is freestanding and doesn't need a wall.

  2. A common question

Are the two seat cushions attached, and can the sofa stand away from a wall?

    The workshop's answer

The two mattresses are separate pieces, so you can move them around. Metal bars run behind the backrest as well as at the sides, so the sofa stands on its own.

  3. A common question

The metal bars on my floor sofa keep coming apart. How do I fix them?

    The workshop's answer

Re-seat each joint until the dots click, and put a rug or fabric under the bars. If they still separate, send the workshop photos or a short video of the joints. Updated bars and one-piece, no-assembly bars exist, so ask whether a swap suits your set.

Questions buyers ask next

Can I buy just the floor sofa seat cushion?

Yes. The seat cushion can be ordered alone for less than the full set, and extra backrests, bolsters or support pillows can be added by custom order.

Will these covers fit a floor sofa from another brand?

Often. Standard covers have fit the original designer teddy sofa. For other foam, measure the foam itself, not the old cover, and send photos; curved-edge pieces are declined.

Are the pillows in the floor sofa photos included?

It depends on the listing. On the teddy convertible, the small and cylindrical pillows are extra; the linen floor sofa includes every pictured piece. Matching pillows can be made.
