The Cutting Table · a common question
What's the difference between a one-piece and a modular floor sofa?
Also asked as:Does the one-piece sofa have the same stuffing? How does it stay together without bars?
One is fixed and quiet. The other moves with the room, and needs a little steel to stand.
The quick answer
A one-piece floor sofa has a solid foam backrest fixed to the upper mattress, so nothing slides and no metal bars are needed; a classic modular floor sofa has separate, softer backrests filled with shredded foam, held upright by metal support bars and free to rearrange. The one-piece is simpler. The modular is more comfortable and more flexible.

- The lower-priced modular couch also has no bars; its backrests are fixed to the seat section.

The two sofas, side by side
| One-piece floor sofa | Classic modular floor sofa | |
|---|---|---|
| Backrest | Solid foam, fixed to the upper mattress | Separate pieces |
| Backrest fill | One block of solid foam | Shredded foam, softer |
| Metal support bars | None needed | Yes, behind the backrests |
| Rearranging | No; top and back are one piece | Yes; place backrests freely |
| Size | Set size only | Longer runs by adding modules |
The lower-priced modular couch sits between them: separate seat pieces, but backrests fixed to the seat and no bars.
Why one needs bars and the other doesn't
A loose backrest wants to slide back when you lean. On the classic sofa, four free-standing frames sit behind the backrests, two at the sides and two at the back, and stop that. They are not attached to the cushions. Once you sit, they stay put.
The one-piece sofa solves the same problem another way. Its backrest is part of the upper mattress, so there is nothing to slide. The support bars Pattern shows the frames, and shredded foam explains the softer fill.
Which floor sofa suits a room that changes often?
If the room changes often, the modular sofa follows. Backrests move, modules add length, and the layouts Pattern shows what that looks like. If you want the sofa to stay exactly where it is, the one-piece asks nothing of you.
The single sofa is its own case: back and arms are attached to the upper couch, so it stands without a frame. The bouclé model's armrest is high-density foam, firm enough to lean on. More shapes live under modular floor sofas. Which matters more to you, stillness or change?
Fixed foam, fewer parts. Loose foam, softer backs. The bars only follow the backrest.
A floor sofa's backrest decides the rest: fixed solid foam means no bars and nothing slides, while separate shredded-foam backs sit softer and need bars.

Buyer questions
- A common question
What's the difference between the one-piece sofa and your classic modular one? Does the one-piece have metal bars?
The workshop's answerThe one-piece has a solid foam backrest attached to the upper mattress, so the two can't be separated, and it comes without metal bars. The classic sofa's backrests are filled with shredded foam, so they're softer, and they're separate pieces you can place freely.
- A common question
How does the one-piece sofa stay together without bars?
The workshop's answerIts top cushion and backrests are one connected piece, so nothing slides and no bars are needed. The classic model is fully modular, with separate pieces held by bars. The bouclé sofa's foam armrest is dense enough to lean on.
- A common question
What's the difference between the lower-priced modular couch and the standard one?
The workshop's answerThe lower-priced couch has no metal bars, and its backrests are fixed to the seat section. The standard sofa has metal support bars and all-separate modular pieces, which makes it more comfortable and more flexible to arrange.
- A common question
How does the single sofa stay upright without a metal frame?
The workshop's answerIts back and arms are attached to the upper couch, so it was designed to stand on its own without metal supports. The workshop also sent extra photos in other colors on request.
Questions buyers ask next
Can a one-piece floor sofa be made in a custom size?
No. The one-piece model comes in its set size only. If you need a particular length, the classic modular floor sofa is the one to plan around, since it is built from separate pieces and can grow by modules.
Are the metal bars bolted to the cushions?
No. They are four free-standing frames, two at the sides and two at the back, sitting behind the backrests. They keep the backrests from sliding back or tipping when you lean, and they stay put once you sit.
Is a bouclé floor sofa armrest soft or firm?
Firm. The bouclé sofa's foam armrest is high-density foam, dense enough to lean on without folding. On a classic modular sofa, the softer part is the backrests, which are filled with shredded foam.
