The Cutting Table · a question, worked through
Does a floor sofa have to go against a wall, or will it slide in the middle of a room?
Floating a floor sofa in the middle of the room feels daring. It holds, and here is why, in the order people usually ask.

The quick answer
No wall is needed: a floor sofa can stand in the middle of a room because metal support bars along the sides and back hold the backrests upright and keep the cushions from slipping. The back is covered in the same fabric as the front, so it looks finished from behind. On a smooth floor, a rug underneath reduces sliding.

Have the tape measure handy when they call. Old cushions shrink and sag; the seat underneath does not. — Maggie

“Does it need a wall behind it?”
No. Metal support bars, iron ones, run along the sides and the back and hold the backrests upright on their own. That is what makes a modular floor sofa freestanding: the bars do the job a wall would otherwise do. The support bars Pattern shows how they fit.
“Won't the cushions slip off the back?”
The same bars stop them. They keep the backrests from tipping and the cushions from slipping, so the sofa works with nothing behind it. A buyer asked exactly this before setting one out in the open, and the answer was simply that the iron bars are there for that job.
“What will the room see from behind?”
Fabric, dear, the same as the front. The back is covered in the same fabric as the rest of the sofa, so nothing looks unfinished when it floats. I have re-covered enough window seats with a raw back hidden against the wall to appreciate a piece that has nothing to hide.
“And on slick hardwood?”
The bars hold the cushions; the sofa as a whole can still creep on a smooth floor. A rug or carpet underneath reduces sliding. One buyer's idea of wrapping the bars in grip mat was accepted as reasonable, though the workshop had no other reports of sliding. Bare bars can also scratch wood, so fabric, carpet or felt under them does double duty.
What is under your floor sofa: rug, boards or tile?
Floor sofas stand freestanding in the middle of a room because iron support bars hold the backrests, and the back is finished in the same fabric as the front.

Buyer questions
- A common question
If the sofa isn't against a wall, will the cushions slide off?
The workshop's answerNo. Iron support bars stop the cushions slipping, so it works without a wall. If the whole sofa slides on a smooth floor, wrapping the bars in grip mat was accepted as a reasonable idea, though no other sliding had been reported.
- A common question
We'd like the floor sofa out in the room, not on a wall. Will that work?
The workshop's answerIt will. Metal support bars along the sides and back hold the backrests upright so it stands on its own, and the back is covered in the same fabric. A rug or carpet underneath helps stop sliding.
- A common question
Will the metal bars scratch my hardwood floor?
The workshop's answerBare bars can scratch wood. Put carpet or a small piece of fabric under the 5/8 in (16 mm) bars, or add felt feet; a fitted protective bar grip was also in the works, since other brands' grips may not fit.
Questions buyers ask next
Is the back of a floor sofa finished like the front?
Yes. The back is covered in the same fabric as the rest of the sofa, so it can face a room, a doorway or a dining table without showing an unfinished side.
What stops a freestanding floor sofa creeping across hardwood?
A rug or carpet underneath is the simplest fix. One buyer's idea of wrapping the bars in grip mat was also considered reasonable, and fabric or felt under the bars protects the floor from scratches at the same time.
Which parts of a freestanding floor sofa do the bars hold in place?
The backrests and the cushions. The bars run along the sides and back, keep the backrests upright and stop the cushions slipping, which is why the sofa needs no wall to lean on.
