The Cutting Table · a common question

How firm is the foam? I want a bench seat I don't sink into.

Also asked as:How firm will this cushion be?I need it very firm and not soft.

Firm is a number, not an adjective. Here is the number behind these bench cushions, partner, and how to order a firm seat that stays smooth.

The quick answer

Very firm: the bench cushions use high-density foam of about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), which supports you without sinking and holds its shape over time. The same foam goes into every cushion. For a firm, clean seat, high-density cold foam stays stable, doesn't wrinkle or sag, and can be made completely smooth, with no quilting or buttons.

What 32 means once you sit down

Density is how much foam is packed into a cubic foot. At about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) there is a lot of material pushing back, so you sit on the cushion, not in it.

The same foam goes into every cushion, from a bench cushion to an L-shaped seat, because it lasts. One foam, one predictable result. Engineers like that. The density vs firmness pattern has the numbers side by side.

A real project

Two velvet pads, one L, no buttons

A buyer got in touch wanting a firm seat they would not sink into, with no quilting or tufting: two velvet seat pads meeting in an L, 47 x 23.5 in (120 x 60 cm) and 51 x 23.5 in (130 x 60 cm).

The workshop recommended high-density cold foam. It stays stable and doesn't wrinkle or sag, so both pads could be completely smooth. They were quoted at 3–5 working days of production.

Writing a firm, smooth seat into your order

  • Name the thickness. Firm foam keeps whatever height you choose; the seat height calculator helps.
  • Ask for a plain finish. Firm cold foam holds its shape without buttons.
  • Skip the firmer upgrade. Every cushion already gets the same 32-density foam.
  • Give it a few days. Compressed foam can take up to a week to fully expand after unboxing.

High-density cold foam stays stable and doesn't wrinkle or sag, so a firm bench cushion can be made completely smooth, with no buttons.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

How firm is the cushion? I need it very firm, not soft.

    The workshop's answer

Very firm. The workshop uses high-density foam of about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), supportive and definitely not soft. The same foam goes into all its cushions because it is durable and keeps its shape.

  2. A common question

I want a firm seat I don't sink into, with a clean look and no tufting. Which foam?

    The workshop's answer

High-density cold foam. It stays stable, keeps its shape and doesn't wrinkle or sag, and the cushions can be made completely smooth, with no quilting or buttons.

  3. A common question

One cushion still looks flatter than the others after unboxing. Is it faulty?

    The workshop's answer

Wait: compressed foam can take up to a week to fully expand. Take the cover off, shake and stretch the foam. If it is still flat after several days, send photos for replacement foam.

Questions buyers ask next

Is high-density foam the same thing as firm foam?

Not quite. Density is how much foam fills a cubic foot; firmness is how hard it pushes back. This 32-density foam is both: dense enough to keep its shape, firm enough that you sit on it.

Can a firm cushion be made without buttons or tufting?

Yes. High-density cold foam stays stable on its own, so the cushion can be made completely smooth and still won't wrinkle or sag.

Is there a foam softer than 32-density?

Yes. The floor sofa uses a medium-hard 28-density foam that is comfortable to sit and sleep on, keeps its shape for years and softens slightly with use.
