The Cutting Table · a checklist answer

What size cushion should I order for my daybed?

Also asked as:Twin size daybed cushion?Make it look and feel like a couch

A daybed is a bed that wants to be a sofa, and its cushion has to satisfy both jobs. The numbers are simple once you measure the right thing.

The quick answer

Measure the inside of the daybed frame and send a photo with the dimensions, because daybeds vary between models. A twin-size daybed takes about 38 x 75 in (97 x 191 cm), in one piece or two equal halves of 38 x 37.5 in (97 x 95 cm). For a daybed seat, 3 or 4 in (8 or 10 cm) of thickness works well.

Six checks before you order a daybed cushion

  1. Measure inside the frame, rail to rail and end to end. Daybeds vary between models.
  2. Photograph the daybed and send the picture with your numbers.
  3. Skip the product link. Measurements can't be pulled from a listing; the tape decides.
  4. Check the mattress size. If the daybed is sold for a twin mattress, 38 x 75 in (97 x 191 cm) is the usual cushion.
  5. Pick a thickness: 3 or 4 in (8 or 10 cm) for a seat. The foam firmness finder helps with the feel.
  6. Decide one piece or two, then place one order per cushion.

One daybed cushion or two equal halves?

Each half goes in as its own order or through a custom order link.

Why two halves read like a couch

Two equal cushions put a seam at the center, and the eye reads a center seam as a sofa. A buyer in the US buying a daybed frame wanted exactly that: a standard twin split into two 38 x 37.5 in (97 x 95 cm) cushions, placed as two orders, 3 or 4 in thick. Tolerance is kindness to your future self, partner, so check the halves add up to the frame.

Odd frames work too: a store-bought daybed got two cushions at 68 x 40 in (173 x 102 cm) and 48 x 49 in (122 x 124 cm). Browse daybed cushions, and add backs with the sofa-look pattern. What does your daybed measure inside the rails?

Split a twin daybed cushion into two 38 x 37.5 in halves and it reads like a couch; 3 or 4 in of foam is enough for a daybed seat.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

I'm buying a daybed frame and want two cushions so it looks like a couch. What sizes?

    The workshop's answer

Measurements can't be pulled from a product link, but a standard twin (38 x 75 in) is enough: split it into two equal 38 x 37.5 in cushions, placed as two orders, 3 or 4 in thick.

  2. A common question

Can you make a French mattress cushion for my daybed?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send a photo of the daybed with its dimensions. When the daybed's description said a twin mattress fits, a 38 x 75 in cushion was proposed.

  3. A common question

My daybed mattress is about 89 x 38 in. One piece or two halves?

    The workshop's answer

Either works: the full size, or two 44 x 38 in cushions sent as a custom order link.

  4. A common question

My size falls between two options. Which do I choose?

    The workshop's answer

The next larger option, with your exact measurements in the personalization box. The workshop sews to the note; the option only sets the price.

Questions buyers ask next

Can two daybed halves sit flush with no gap?

Yes. Divide the total length equally and send each cushion's width, depth and thickness. Order each section separately, and go slightly smaller only if you want a gap.

Why does the workshop want a photo of my daybed?

Because daybeds vary between models. The photo shows the frame your numbers describe, and measurements can't be taken from a product link.

Is a twin daybed cushion the same size as a twin mattress?

Usually. When a daybed is sold to take a twin mattress, the cushion proposed was 38 x 75 in (97 x 191 cm). Measure inside the frame anyway, because models vary.
