What's the most durable, easiest-to-clean cushion fabric for a house with kids?

Kids and dogs are the real quality control. Here's what the workshop sends to families whose cushions face breakfast, homework and the odd tipped juice cup every day.

The quick answer

The best cushion fabric for kids is either the workshop's soft fabric, a wipe-clean microfiber a little tougher than linen, or its velvet, which stands up to daily child use and is the easiest to spot-clean. Soft fabric is often named first for kids' floor sofas, velvet for benches and banquettes. Skip the striped N02 and N03 cottons, which are harder to clean.

The family fabric checklist

  • Pick soft fabric or velvet. Those are the two ranges the workshop names for homes with young children.
  • Soft fabric for floor sofas and play corners. It's a microfiber, soft to the touch, a little more durable than linen and thinner than velvet, and it wipes clean. See kids' floor sofas.
  • Velvet for benches and banquettes where kids eat. Velvet is very strong and stands up to wear and tear from daily child use.
  • Wipe first, wash later. Marks lift off velvet's pile more readily than off textured weaves, so spot-clean between washes.
  • Choose mid or dark tones. Pure white shows every grape.

Leave these for the grown-ups' room

  • The striped N02 and N03 cottons. Pretty on a porch swing, but cotton, and not child-friendly to clean.
  • Textured weaves at the breakfast table. Marks settle into texture instead of lifting off.
  • A 'performance' label taken on faith. Ask what the fabric actually does.

“Do you have performance fabric?”

Families ask me that all the time, neighbor, and the honest answer is: these two ranges. When buyers ask for performance fabric for kids, soft fabric and velvet are where the workshop points them. Neither is sold as a certified performance fabric; the word gets used loosely. The performance fabric pattern and the kid-friendly fabric pattern go deeper.

Who eats on your bench, and how often?

Striped cotton cushions look sweet in a family kitchen, but cotton stripes are harder to clean than velvet or a wipe-clean microfiber.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Which fabric is most hard-wearing and easy to clean for a family with young kids?

    The workshop's answer

Velvet or the soft polyester fabric. Velvet is the easiest to spot-clean between washes, because marks wipe off the pile more readily than off textured weaves, while the striped N02 and N03 cottons aren't child-friendly to clean.

  2. A common question

Which fabrics are strongest for children's use?

    The workshop's answer

The velvet chart is the most suitable: very strong, resistant to wear and tear from daily child use, and easy to clean when spills happen.

  3. A common question

I have lots of kids. Which fabric cleans up best, and do you have performance fabric?

    The workshop's answer

The soft-fabric range cleans easily. For a higher-quality, hard-wearing option, the workshop recommends velvet.

  4. A common question

Which fabric is the most durable and easiest to clean for kids?

    The workshop's answer

Soft fabric, a microfiber that is a bit more durable than linen, thinner than velvet and still soft to the touch, and it wipes clean. Velvet is also easy to clean.

Questions buyers ask next

Is linen a bad idea for a family with children?

No. Linen is hard-wearing, and the covers come off to machine-wash at 86°F (30°C). Pick mid or dark tones and avoid pure white; for very heavy use, soft fabric or velvet is the stronger choice.

Is there a waterproof option for toddlers?

The standard indoor fabric isn't waterproof, just durable and easy to clean. For toddlers, ask for the water-repellent B19, the water-resistant premium charts or faux leather. Any product can be made in any fabric.

Can a bench corner be padded for a crawling baby?

Yes. The workshop adds padded flaps over bench corners and tie straps for kids' furniture. Send photos and measurements so it can size the piece.
