A teal corduroy star floor cushion that holds its own against safari wallpaper
Animals on the wall, spots on the rug and a star on the dark floor. Harlan reads how one deep, plain color and a ribbed cloth keep the patterns from quarreling.
The quick answer
Against patterned wallpaper, choose a star floor cushion in one solid, saturated color and let texture carry the interest. Here deep teal corduroy stands apart from beige and gray safari animals, a mustard ribbed pillow repeats the ribs in a warmer tone, and dark floorboards make the teal read richer. Keep prints on the wall and rug, not on the seat.
Pinned by Harlan: the star, the lamp and the fire truck
Five pins, from the teal cord star on the dark boards to the red fire truck parked on the shelf.
The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Reading the plate: one print per surface
Two prints and a ribbed cloth share this kids' room, and not one of them is picking a fight.
The wall carries the first print: safari animals in beige and gray. The floor carries the second, an animal-print rug on dark wood boards. Between them, under a white ceiling canopy, sits a star floor cushion in deep teal corduroy, self piped and box edged, solid from point to point.
That solid color is the whole trick. A busy wall swallows a patterned seat, and the star would dissolve into the animals. Teal is a color the wallpaper does not use, so the star keeps its outline from across the room. The dark boards underneath make the teal read richer than it would on pale oak.
Interest comes back through texture instead of print. The mustard pillow is ribbed like the cord below it, the same idea in a warmer tone. A cream cloud pillow sits beside it, plain and soft. Under the lamp the ribs throw fine lines of light and shade, so a plain cloth still gives the eye something to read; more in corduroy wale and nap direction.
The light belongs to the plan too. A glowing cloud wall lamp and cotton-ball string lights give the nook its own low evening glow. White cube shelving with books, a gray basket and black bins keeps the storage quiet. Then one bright toy, a red fire truck on the shelf top, with a toy robot nearby, adds the counterpoint every kids' room needs.
My friend, if you love stripes, save them for a room with plain walls. What pattern is already on yours?
Mixing prints, plains and texture around a floor cushion
- Put the loudest print on the wall and keep the seat one solid color.
- Choose a seat color the wallpaper does not use, like teal against beige and gray animals.
- Repeat a texture, not a print: a ribbed pillow on a ribbed seat.
- Allow one print underfoot, like the animal-print rug, and none on the cushion.
- Add one bright object, a red toy on a shelf, and stop there.
- Save stripes for rooms with plain walls.
Ninety-six inches of bone corduroy, and the underside nobody checks
A couple in the US wanted a floor sofa between the two standard sizes. Rather than two 48 in (122 cm) pieces, they asked for one long couch 96 in (244 cm) wide, with a single continuous seat cushion. The workshop made it that way, in off-white bone corduroy; more shapes live in modular floor sofas.
When it arrived, one corner cover had a stain, and one floor cushion cover showed a patch of a different color on its underside. They sent photos. The workshop sent a new backrest cover and a new non-slip base part.
A seam is a promise, and so is the underside nobody looks at. Plain cloth shows every mark, in a showroom or a kids' room. When you unroll a new floor sofa, turn every cover over and look before you settle in.
Buyer questions: half a couch, missing rods and a cushion that grew
- A common question
I already own half of the modular couch. Can I buy just the other half, or a single corner?
The workshop's answerYes. Order the single sofa rather than the full corner set and it comes with two straight backrests, or order the closed corner half directly. If you want one backrest straight or an open corner, write it in the Add Personalization box and the piece will be made to match your existing set.
- A common question
My floor sofa arrived, but the metal rods aren't in the box. Where are they?
The workshop's answerSofas can ship in several packages. In this case there were three, with the rods packed separately, and all three were delivered together by UPS. The shop shared the proof of delivery and suggested checking with the carrier and the building reception. The concierge had the third box.
- A common question
My stuffed cushions measure bigger than the size I ordered. Can they grow like that?
The workshop's answerYes. The cushions are fluffy, so they can stretch and swell a little beyond the nominal measurements.

Questions buyers ask next
How do you mix patterns in a kids' room with a star floor cushion?
Give each surface one job. Let the wallpaper carry the main print and the rug a second one, keep the floor cushion a solid color, and bring interest back with texture, such as a ribbed pillow on a corduroy seat.
Why does teal corduroy look richer on a dark wood floor?
Dark boards under a saturated color deepen it by contrast. In this room the teal reads richer than it would on pale oak, and it also stands apart from the beige and gray animals on the wallpaper.
Should a star pouf be striped if the wallpaper is patterned?
Usually not. A striped seat against a busy wall gives the eye two prints to sort out, and the star's outline gets lost. Save stripes for rooms with plain walls, and keep the seat solid when the wall is doing the talking.
Can a floor sofa be made as one long seat cushion?
Yes. One couple asked for a 96 in (244 cm) couch with a single continuous seat cushion instead of two 48 in (122 cm) pieces. Whatever the length, check every cover, underside included, when you unroll it.
Sit well. — Harlan
