A teal velvet bolster pillow across a linen bed, and the proportion that makes it sit right

Harlan writes a letter about one round velvet roll on a pale oak bed: how thick, how long, and why the piped ends matter more than most people think.

A long teal velvet bolster with piped ends lies across a linen-dressed bed, framed by cream waffle pillows and a candle on the nightstand.

The quick answer

A bolster pillow on a bed looks right when its length runs about two-thirds to three-quarters of the mattress width and its diameter stays near 8 in (20 cm), the size most bolsters are made. This teal velvet roll with self-piped ends sits in front of cream waffle pillows, low enough to frame them rather than hide them.

High Point ·

My friend,

A letter about one teal roll on a pale bed

A bolster that is too fat turns a bed into a sofa, and one that is too thin looks like a draft stopper. The teal velvet bolster pillow on this pale oak bed is neither, and I want to tell you why.

It lies across white linen in front of two cream waffle-knit pillows. Its diameter is modest, so it covers the lower edge of those pillows without climbing their faces. Its length stops well inside the mattress corners. That is the whole trick of proportion on a bed: the roll frames what stands behind it and never competes.

Look at the ends. Each round disc is finished with self piping, a cord covered in the same teal velvet. Without that cord a velvet end disc tends to pucker, and one wrinkled end is all the eye will see. With it, the circle stays flat and the roll looks tailored, not stuffed.

The morning light here is soft and cool. Velvet remembers every stroke of the hand, and the pile along the roll catches that light, so one side reads bright teal and the other deepens toward ink. The waffle knit behind is matte, which is why the sheen shows at all.

None of the props is an accident. The candle on a woven rattan tray puts one warm flame against all that cool teal. The ceramic vase of baby's breath repeats the white of the linen. The books on the rough wood nightstand say somebody reads here.

How thick and how long a bed bolster ought to be

Most bolsters the workshop makes are about 8 in (20 cm) across. A buyer once asked about a 20 in (51 cm) cylinder, and the honest answer was that it would be unusually large, closer to a pouf than a pillow.

Length follows the mattress. A neat rule is two-thirds to three-quarters of its width. On a queen, 60 in (152 cm) across, that is a bolster of 40 to 45 in (102 to 114 cm). The workshop has cut them 44 in (112 cm) long and 6 in (15 cm) across for a slimmer line, and 65 in (165 cm) long and 7 in (18 cm) across for a long rest. When a bench runs longer still, the bolster can be split into two pieces, each easy to lift.

Put the tape on the bed first. Then look through the bolster pillows in the Cushion Atlas, read the bolster size and diameter pattern, and keep the velvet shelf open beside you. What does your mattress measure across?

A real project

Eight covers cut to answer one bench

A buyer got in touch after ordering a bench cushion in one color with piping in a second, and asked a fair question: could the workshop make throw pillow covers to match, for inserts they already owned?

The plan changed along the way. It began at 18 x 18 in and 23 x 25 in, and settled on eight covers, some about 25 x 25 in (63 x 63 cm) and the rest about 17 x 17 in (44 x 44 cm). The bodies came in three colors, with the piping colors traded between them, so the set talked to the bench without copying it.

The shop showed them that the zippered cover listing works for pillow covers too, as long as you give exact sizes, and sent a custom link. That is the lesson I would hand any young tailor: custom cushion covers are ordered by exact size, not by the name of the pillow.

Buyer questions: spare covers, matching rolls and a torn seam

  1. A common question

Do you sell covers on their own, so I can change the color later?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. A full extra cover set can be ordered by itself. The shop sends a custom link in the color you choose, the link stays open if you would rather buy later, and extra covers can ship together with the main order.

  2. A common question

Can you make bolster pillows that match my bench cushion?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Bolsters come in the bench fabric or entirely in a contrast or stripe, in custom lengths and diameters, such as 44 in (112 cm) long by 6 in (15 cm) across. Most are about 8 in (20 cm) in diameter; a 20 in (51 cm) cylinder would be unusually large. On a long bench the bolster can be split in two.

  3. A common question

A cover arrived torn, and another was missing its piping. Will you replace them?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. A cover that ripped in shipping and an L-shaped armrest cover that arrived without its piping were both replaced with new covers. For one small tear found after unpacking, the shop asked the buyer to share the cost, a quarter of that cover's price.

A velvet bolster end without piping tends to pucker; a self-piped edge keeps the round disc flat and the whole roll looking tailored.

Questions buyers ask next

Where does a bolster go on a bed with two sleeping pillows?

In front of the pillows, lying along the mattress. At about 8 in (20 cm) across it covers their lower edge without hiding their faces, so the bed reads as layered rather than stacked, and the bolster can come off at night in one move.

What length bolster suits a queen bed?

Two-thirds to three-quarters of the mattress width. A queen is 60 in (152 cm) across, so a bolster of 40 to 45 in (102 to 114 cm) sits inside the edges and leaves the corners of the bed clean.

Why does one side of a velvet roll look darker than the other?

Velvet pile reflects light by the direction it lies. Along a round bolster the pile turns toward the window on one side and away on the other, so one face gleams and the other deepens. That shift is what gives teal its depth.
