A Corduroy Rainbow Arch for a Kids Floor Sofa Corner, Read From the Door and the Rug

Three arches, one inside the other. From the doorway you see a rainbow. Kneel down and you see ribs, shadow and a seat the size of a toddler.

The quick answer

A nesting corduroy rainbow arch reads well from 10 feet (3 m) because its colors step from darkest outside to lightest inside, and it rewards a close look because side light shows the depth of the wale. Give the largest arch the calmest color, since it is the piece you see most. The small cream half-dome doubles as a toddler seat.

Pinned by Hana: five marks, from the outer arch to the wall

Five pins, read from the outer arch inward, then out to the walking toddler and the book ledge above.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

  1. Sage outer archThe largest arch takes the calmest color, since it is the piece you see most.
  2. Blush middle archBlush sits between sage and cream so the colors step lighter toward the center.
  3. Cream half-domeThe smallest piece fills the inner curve and doubles as a toddler seat.
  4. Toddler for scaleA walking toddler shows the arch sits around waist height.
  5. Book ledgeKeeping wall decor small and high leaves the floor for play.

From the doorway, at 10 feet (3 m)

Stand at the door. You do not see corduroy yet. You see three bands of color: sage outside, blush in the middle, cream at the heart.

That order does the work. Darkest outside, lightest inside, so the nesting reads at a glance, even to a child who cannot name the colors yet. The outer arch is the piece you see most, so it takes the calmest shade. Sage sits quietly beside the oak floor and the linen curtains.

A toddler walks past on the right. The arch reaches about waist height on the child. Judge the size by the child, not by the frame of the photograph.

The walls stay nearly empty. One book ledge with two picture books. A wooden peg rail with a knit bunny. Small things, hung high, so the floor belongs to play. A woven basket holds whatever else there is, and the star-dotted cream rug marks the play zone without adding another color.

From the rug, at 10 inches (25 cm)

Now kneel. The arch stands side-on to the tall window, so daylight rakes across the ribs and each wale throws a thin shadow. That is why the corduroy looks deeper here than it would facing the glass.

The edges are boxed, with no piping. On a play piece I prefer it. A plain band holds the curve, and nothing stands proud for small fingers to pick at.

Up close you also find the cream half-dome. It is the smallest piece and fills the inner curve, and it is also a seat. Children discover this before adults do.

If you order a set like this, choose the outer arch for the room and let the inner pieces be the accents. The kids floor sofa Atlas shows other shapes, and sizes by age helps with scale. Ask for every piece to be cut with the wale running the same way, or one arch will read a shade off in that side light.

From the door, color. From the rug, ribs. In between, a child.

A real project

Five inches of floor beside a support post

One buyer wrote in about a modular sofa for a tight spot. There were 77 to 78 in (196 to 198 cm) of floor before a support post, and the worry was a return if it did not fit.

The workshop asked for the measurements first. A sofa of 70 to 72 in (178 to 183 cm) would leave comfortable room, so the standard sofa was made 72 in (183 cm) long, in corduroy.

Five or six inches (13 to 15 cm) look like nothing on paper. In a room, that gap is where a hand reaches past and a child squeezes by. Leave a hand's width of floor. A made-to-order piece can be shortened before it is sewn, which is kinder than sending it back.

How much floor is there in your corner, measured at the baseboard?

Buyer questions: floors, smaller sizes and a very big circle

  1. A common question

Will the metal support bars scratch a hardwood floor, and will the floor sofa slide around?

    The workshop's answer

According to the workshop, the bars have small protective dots, and the seat cushions have a non-slip layer or hook-and-loop tape underneath. One buyer found neither on their set and put felt feet on the bars.

  2. A common question

Could the kids' floor couch be made smaller, around 30 x 30 in (75 x 75 cm), in a pastel color?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop pointed the buyer to the standard size and mentioned that a longer version is also available. The couch can ship on a date you choose; ask for the delivery estimate in writing.

  3. A common question

Can you make a round floor cushion about 75 in (190 cm) across?

    The workshop's answer

No. The largest tufted floor cushion the workshop makes is 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm), and a 75 in diameter is not offered.

On a nesting play arch, the calmest color belongs on the largest arch: it is the piece seen from across the room, and the small ones can carry the bright accents.

Questions buyers ask next

Why do corduroy play pieces sometimes look like two different shades?

Corduroy has a nap, so it reflects light differently depending on which way the wale runs. Pieces cut in different directions can read as two shades in side light. Ask for every part to be cut the same way.

Should a kids' play arch have piping?

Usually not. A plain box edge keeps the curve clean and gives small fingers nothing to pick at. Piping sharpens an outline, which matters more on a window seat than on a play piece that gets climbed.

How do I choose colors for a three-piece play arch?

Step from darkest outside to lightest inside so the nesting is easy to read. Choose the outer arch to suit the room, since it is the largest surface, and let the middle arch and the half-dome carry the playful colors.

How much floor should I leave around a kids' floor sofa?

Leave a few inches beyond the piece at floor level, around posts, doors and heaters. One buyer with 77 to 78 in (196 to 198 cm) of space had a sofa made at 72 in (183 cm) for comfortable clearance.
