A Reading by MaggieDining Chair Cushions & Pads
Powder aqua chair pads with ties, and the balcony props that earn their keep
Maggie's notebook page on a narrow city balcony: two folding chairs, one herb box, and the reason every object got its few square feet.
SaveThe quick answer
A chair cushion with ties suits a folding balcony chair because ties at the back uprights hold the pad in place while the frame folds and unfolds. Here, powder aqua box pads in a water-repellent membrane fabric sit on acacia bistro chairs, and a rosemary and thyme planter adds the only other color. Measure the seat inside the frame and send a photo before ordering.
Notebook page: six objects, one narrow balcony
Six things fit on this balcony, and every one of them had to audition. I've kept a notebook of small outdoor spaces for years, and the good ones all obey one rule: nothing goes out there that can't also be used.
Start with the cushions. Two square box pads in powder aqua sit on folding acacia bistro chairs, a chair cushion with ties on each. They're thick enough to hide the slats, so you sit on a cushion and not on a row of ridges. Self piping keeps the outline square to the frame; on a seat this small, a contrast welt would only look fussy.
The color does the heavy lifting. Gray city daylight flattens everything, and warm acacia over wooden deck tiles could easily turn the whole scene brown. Pale aqua cools it down and makes a narrow space read wider than it is.
The fabric is a water-repellent membrane. If you've been searching for waterproof outdoor cushions, read the difference in our water-repellent vs waterproof Pattern first. More small-space seating lives among our patio and porch cushions.
Right, then: what's growing on your railing, dear? Keep it in mind for the list below.
Pinned by Maggie: five notes from the railing
Five pins, from the tie at the back leg to the herb box hanging on the railing.

- Square tie-on pad
The pad is thick enough to hide the chair slats and square to the folding frame.
- Fabric tie
Ties at the back legs keep the pad in place on a fold-up chair.
- Second chair pad
A matching pad on the second chair keeps the tiny space orderly.
- Herb planter
Rosemary and thyme on the railing bring green to a small balcony.
- Wooden deck tiles
Pale aqua lifts the warm acacia and decking and keeps the space airy.

Why each prop made the cut, and how to copy it
- Two folding acacia chairs: they fold flat against the wall, so the pads need ties, not just gravity.
- The folding slatted table: the same wood as the chairs, so the only color change on the floor is the aqua.
- Rosemary and thyme in a railing planter: green at eye level, and a box that hangs outside takes no floor at all.
- Wooden deck tiles: warm underfoot, and the reason the aqua looks fresh instead of cold.
- The thin metal railing: dark and fine, it frames the scene the way piping frames a cushion.
- The brick street and parked car below: not styled, but they say city balcony, not backyard, and remind you every inch counts.
- To copy it: one pale fabric on every seat, one living green, and everything else in a single wood tone.
A 21 1/2 in seat and four linen close-ups
One buyer wrote in about an armchair that needed a tie-on seat pad: ties at the back, about 5 in (13 cm) thick, on a seat base of 21 1/2 in (55 cm). They sent a photo of the chair first, which is exactly the right first move.
The workshop answered with close-ups of four linens, smoke, beige, brown and mint, plus a linen swatch card. The buyer had liked the color in the listing photo, and the workshop confirmed it sits between beige and smoke, so the choice was made from real fabric rather than a screen.
The lesson went into my notebook in capitals: send a photo of the chair with the seat measured. Where the ties go and how thick the pad can be both depend on the frame. Our tie placement Pattern shows the usual spots, and pads like these are filed under dining chair cushions.

Buyer questions
- A common question
Is that ottoman corduroy, and does it fold?
The workshop's answerYes to both. It's corduroy, and its two stacked layers are joined so it opens flat or folds back. If you'd rather have the layers as separate pieces, the workshop makes them that way on request.
- A common question
My chair pad is wider at the front than the back. Where does the zipper go, and will the foam be a struggle to get out for washing?
The workshop's answerNo struggle. The workshop sews the cover and puts the foam in itself, so the zipper is placed and sized for the foam to slide in and out, even when the front is wider than the back. One buyer's pad measured 15 in (38 cm) across the back and 18 3/4 in (47.5 cm) across the front. Upload a drawing with back width, front width and depth when you order.
- A common question
The seats on my chairs have slightly rounded corners. Can the pads follow them?
The workshop's answerYes. Custom seat cushions can be made with rounded corners, with matching back cushions if you want them. Send your measurements and photos so the fit can be confirmed first.
A chair cushion with ties belongs at the back uprights on a folding chair, because nothing else holds the pad when the frame folds.

Questions buyers ask next
Where should the ties go on a folding chair pad?
At the back uprights. On a folding frame nothing else holds the pad, so ties at the back legs keep it in place while the chair is opened, closed and carried inside. Mention the fold when you order.
How thick should a tie-on pad be to hide chair slats?
Thick enough that you can't feel the gaps. A box pad does it on these bistro chairs, and one armchair buyer asked for about 5 in (13 cm). On a folding chair, check it still folds with the pad tied on.
Does a water-repellent membrane make a balcony chair pad waterproof?
No. Water-repellent means water beads and runs off the surface; waterproof means it can't pass through at all. They are different promises, so check which one a fabric makes before it lives outdoors on a balcony.
