A Reading by ÉlodieWindow Seat Cushions

A navy floral window seat cushion, up close, and how its piped edge will age

Élodie leans in on a printed box cushion with self piping and a deep gusset, and runs it through the tests a real house sets: small hands, paws, coffee and low morning sun.

Up close: piping covered in the same navy floral keeps the edge crisp without cutting through the pattern.

The quick answer

A printed window seat cushion with self piping ages more gracefully than a solid one with a contrast cord, because the covered edge and the busy floral hide the small marks daily life leaves. Ask for firm fill right into the corners, turn the cushion now and then in strong sun, and order a custom size by choosing the next size up and writing your exact measurements.

Ink navy, washed denim and one olive sprig

Lean in close to a cushion's edge and you can read its future.

This one is a box cushion on a cream painted window seat, printed with flowers in ink navy, washed-denim sky blue, chalk white and a little taupe. The cord of the self piping is covered in the same floral, so the edge is sharp without drawing a hard line through the pattern. The gusset is deep and filled firmly to the corners, with no sag where the side meets the top. A second cushion in the same print waits behind it, so this is a run of seats, not a single pad.

Low morning sun comes from behind, picking out the paler flowers and warming the painted wood. Everything on the sill is chosen for that light. A speckled stoneware mug in matte cream repeats the paint below. Three old leather-bound books add worn brown spines beside the cool blues. And an olive sprig in a water glass is the only color outside the blue family. Let one color speak and the others listen: here the blues speak, and the olive answers once.

Who sits on your window seat most, the children, the dog, or the morning coffee, my friends? The answer decides how this cushion will age. Sun through glass has its own Pattern, will a window seat cushion fade, and small hands have theirs in kid-friendly cushion fabric. More printed and plain seats live among the window seat cushions and living room cushions.

Five pins, from the printed self piping to the olive sprig that stands outside the blue family.

The daily-life test: small hands, paws, coffee and sun

  • Small hands: a busy print forgives. A crayon line or a drop of juice disappears into ink navy and washed-denim petals far sooner than on plain cream.
  • Paws: fur shows by contrast. Pale hair hides in the white and sky-blue flowers and shows on the navy ground; dark hair does the opposite. No fabric stops claws, so keep nails trimmed.
  • Coffee: blot at once rather than scrubbing, and work from the outside of the spot inward.
  • Sun: morning light through the glass lands on the front edge first. Turn or flip the cushion now and then so one face does not take it all.
  • Corners: firm fill right into the corners keeps a box edge square after years of sitting. A soft corner is where sag begins.
A real project

A 44 1/2 inch window-frame cushion that fit edge to edge

A buyer wrote in about a window-frame cushion only 15 3/8 x 44 1/2 in (39 x 113 cm), and just 1 5/8 in (4 cm) high. Her size was not on the menu.

The workshop told her to choose the 15 3/4 x 47 1/4 in (40 x 120 cm) option and write her true measurements in the note, then made it to those exact numbers, in her chosen color with a contrasting piping. It left the workshop within two days. Her note back said it was beautifully made, arrived super fast and fit exactly.

A cushion that slim, set inside a frame, has nowhere to hide; every fraction of an inch shows. Contrast piping was her choice, and it can be lovely, drawing the rectangle like a pencil line. On a print like the one in my photo, I would keep the piping in the pattern. The custom size Pattern explains the next-size-up method.

The lesson: Order the next size up and write the exact size; a made-to-measure window cushion should fit edge to edge.

Buyer questions: one piece or sections, returns, and a custom quote

  1. A common question

My bench is long, with steps and curved front corners. Should the cushion be one piece or several sections?

    The workshop's answer

One piece is possible, but for a long bench with steps and curved front corners it is harder to make and may cost more, so the workshop asks what you prefer and suggests sections as the easier route. For a curved banquette, it reviews a one-piece template with its craftsmen before quoting.

  2. A common question

If I pick a custom size from the dropdown and add my measurements in personalization, can I still return it?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. You pay only the return shipping. The workshop makes the cushion exactly to the measurements and color you give, so it should fit correctly the first time.

  3. A common question

What would a custom 18 x 68 1/4 in linen bench cushion cost, and is there any give on the price?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop quotes custom sizes on a private link priced in US dollars. For that 18 x 68 1/4 in (46 x 173 cm) linen cushion, the first quote came down a little after the buyer asked.

On a printed window seat cushion, ask for piping cut from the same print; a solid cord draws a hard line straight through the flowers.

Questions buyers ask next

Is self piping or contrast piping better on a floral print?

On a busy print, self piping keeps the edge sharp without drawing a hard line through the flowers. Contrast piping suits calmer cloth, where a second color outlines the shape; the buyer in this Reading chose contrast on purpose and loved the result.

How do I keep one face of a sunny window seat cushion from taking all the light?

Turn or flip the cushion now and then, so the same face and front edge do not sit in the morning sun every day. Read the Pattern on sun through glass before choosing a very dark or very bright print.

How should a box cushion be filled so the corners stay square?

Ask for firm fill all the way into the corners, as in this close-up, where the gusset meets the top with no dip. A soft corner is usually where a box cushion first loses its shape.

Does a printed window seat hide pet hair?

Better than a single solid, because hair disappears into the matching tones of a mixed print. Pale fur hides in the white flowers here, dark fur in the navy. A print will not stop claws, so keep nails trimmed.
