A mustard corduroy corner floor cushion, and why each prop earned its place

A toddler, a bunny and a sunny corner. I kept notes on every prop, the way I'd keep notes on a job.

Mustard corduroy and a sage canopy make a warm, sunny corner that a small child can stretch out on full length.

The quick answer

A corner floor cushion for a child's room is big enough when the child can lie across it full length; the best-selling kids' size runs 39 3/8 in (100 cm) along each wall. Style it with a canopy one shade cooler than the cushion and pillows lined along the walls, not across the seat.

Notes on a sunny corner

A corner floor cushion proves itself the day a small child lies across it full length with room left for a bunny. This photograph, taken from above, shows it.

I have measured a good many corners in my life, my friend, and never found a better test.

The cushion is mustard corduroy with a box edge and no piping. Corduroy doesn't want a cord in the seam; the ribs draw their own lines. In late-morning sun every rib throws a thin shadow, and the yellow looks deeper than any flat weave.

Over it hangs a sage canopy with fairy lights. Green over yellow is a garden pairing, leaves and sunflowers, and it keeps the warmth from tipping toward pink. On gray days the little lights do the glowing.

Star, square and flower pillows stand along the walls, not scattered on the seat, so the corner reads as a place to lie down, not a pile.

Where does the sun land in your child's room at ten in the morning? Put the corner there. See corner floor cushions, corduroy, quarter-circle sizes and kids' room cushions.

  1. Room to lie full length

A toddler stretches out across the seat, the real test of whether a corner cushion is big enough.

  2. Mustard corduroy edge

Low sun rakes across the ribs here, showing why corduroy looks richer than a flat weave.

  3. Yellow flower pillow

Repeating the cushion's yellow in a pillow stops the accent looking like a one-off.

  4. Plush fox

The fox's orange sits between mustard and the wood tones, bridging the palette.

  5. Sage green canopy

Green over yellow is a garden-like pairing that feels warm without tipping into pink.

Six inches past the limit

A buyer in the US wanted the corduroy floor sofa 88 1/2 in (225 cm) wide instead of the standard 78 3/4 in (200 cm), in a darker green corduroy.

The widest the workshop could go was 82 3/4 in (210 cm), set by the foam blocks, and the corduroy came only in the listed colors. The buyer chose brick at 82 3/4 in and paid a customization fee through a separate listing. It was ready in 7 to 9 days and delivered in 3 to 5. Later the buyer wrote back asking how to make the L-shaped corner pieces fuller: a sofa in daily use.

Say the maximum up front and nobody is disappointed at the door. Buy the cushion once, cry once.

The lesson: Custom length has a hard ceiling set by the foam blocks; quote the maximum up front.

Parents' questions about color, size and metal

  1. A common question

Is the pink brighter than it looks in the photos? It reads as dusty rose to me.

    The workshop's answer

The fabric is the brighter pink. Screen brightness and the daylight in the product photo make it look more muted than it is.

  2. A common question

What size floor couch works for a kids' reading area?

    The workshop's answer

The couch in the photo is 28 x 64 in and suits a large bedtime reading area. Any size can be made, and for children the workshop recommends the soft microfiber fabric.

  3. A common question

What color is the metal frame on the floor sofa? In the mustard photos the bars look gold.

    The workshop's answer

Silver, a chrome look. One buyer ordering the mustard sofa asked to confirm it after noticing a gold tone in the photos.

Questions buyers ask next

Can a corner floor cushion be made in any corduroy color?

Corduroy comes only in the listed colors. A custom color is made in velvet from a numbered chart instead. Order a swatch either way, because rib and nap shift the shade in daylight.

Why does corduroy look richer in sunlight than a flat weave?

Each rib catches light on its crown and holds shadow in the groove, so the color reads at two depths at once. Low morning or evening sun shows it best; in a dim room, lamps do that job.

How is a quarter-round corner cushion measured?

By its two straight sides, along each wall from the corner. The curved front follows from those; a 48 in (122 cm) corner, the standard maximum, has an arc of about 75 1/2 in (192 cm).
