A black, gray and cream knotted-stripe box cushion, and the thickness a stripe reveals
On pure white, black knots look almost printed. They also do something quieter: they draw the cushion's thickness as clearly as a ruler.
Against pure white the black knots look almost printed, a sharper take on the monochrome stripe.
The quick answer
On a custom bench cushion with a strong stripe, choose thickness by the seat's depth, since a patterned boxing strip shows every inch of edge. A 4 in (10 cm) box edge is a sturdy block on an 11.5 in (29 cm) deep seat and a quiet band on a 21.5 in (55 cm) deep bench. Standard orders include the cover and a high-density foam insert.
Ink on cream, almost printed
Against pure white, the black knots stop looking woven. They look printed, like a woodcut, each knot a small hard stop on a cream ground.
The palette is four notes: jet black, a mid gray like wet slate, a paler dove gray, and cream the color of unbleached cotton. The palest knots are the diplomats. They soften the contrast so the stripe does not buzz when you lean close.
Now the corner. It is cut square and finished with self piping, and the stripe runs straight over the edge and down the boxing strip without a break. That takes careful cutting. On the side panel the black knots stack into solid columns, strong vertical lines that make the cushion's height the first thing your eye measures.
There are no props, only a sharp contact shadow under the cushion, and that shadow proves the box edge stays crisp to the floor. A soft, crowned cushion would blur it.
This is the colorway for a black-and-white kitchen banquette or an entryway with checkerboard tile. Keep every throw and pillow plain gray or cream. Let one color speak and the others listen.
Pinned by Élodie: four knots and a corner
Four pins on a single corner, where the stripe decides how thick the cushion looks.

- Black knot row
On white the black knots read almost graphic, closer to a print than a rustic weave.
- Sharp piped corner
The corner is cut square and the stripe carries straight over the edge and down the side.
- Black knot column
Solid black columns on the boxing strip give the cushion a strong vertical line.
- Pale gray knots
The palest knots soften the contrast so the stripe does not buzz at close range.

Why a stripe tells on your thickness
A plain cushion hides its thickness in shadow. A striped boxing strip announces it, inch by inch. On a cushion like this one, thickness is a design decision as much as a comfort one.
Think in proportions. A 4 in (10 cm) edge on a seat 11.5 in (29 cm) deep is more than a third of the depth: a chunky, almost pouf-like block. The same 4 in on a bench 21.5 in (55 cm) deep is less than a fifth: a clean band. On a long entryway bench, the band reads calm. On a small seat, the block reads playful. Both are right if you chose them.
Then check the height. A thicker cushion raises the seat, and near a table or a window ledge that matters. The seat height calculator works it out from your frame, and the thickness guide explains the trade.
Price rarely settles it. On one storage bench of about 120 x 21.5 in (305 x 55 cm), choosing 4 in instead of 3 in (7.5 cm) did not change the quote. So choose the proportion you want to look at every day. More stripes that carry an edge are in bench cushions and striped cotton and ticking.
How deep is your seat, my friends?
A cushion small enough to hold in two hands
A buyer got in touch needing a small cushion: 18.5 x 11.5 in (47 x 29 cm) and 4 in (10 cm) thick, in a clean cream linen-look with matching piping. Nothing on the size menu came close.
The workshop confirmed the foam was included, checked the exact measurement, and added that size to the listing as its own option. A cushion you can hold in two hands, made with the same care as a banquette.
Notice the proportion: 4 in of edge on an 11.5 in seat. A little block, sturdy and cheerful, exactly what a small perch should be. Odd small sizes can be ordered; ask for your exact size rather than rounding to the nearest option. The custom size guide walks through it.
Buyer questions: one piece or three, true cream, and the foam
- A common question
For my storage bench, is one long cushion or three separate ones the cheaper way to go?
The workshop's answerOne piece. Three separate cushions take extra cutting, sewing and zippers, so they cost more than a single cushion of the same area. On a bench of about 120 x 21.5 in (305 x 55 cm), the three pieces were offered as a set below their individual total, and choosing 4 in instead of 3 in did not change the price.
- A common question
I want my piping as close to a true cream as possible. Is linen-look shade L-20 the right pick?
The workshop's answerThe workshop suggested L-02 instead. L-20 leans toward yellow, while L-02 gives a clean cream. Once the buyer approved, the order was updated to a burnt terracotta velvet with L-02 piping.
- A common question
Does the price include the foam insert, or only the cover?
The workshop's answerStandard orders include the cover and the high-density foam insert, ready to use. Covers on their own are a separate, cheaper option.

Questions buyers ask next
How thick should a striped entryway bench cushion be?
Decide by depth and by how much edge you want to see. On a bench around 21.5 in (55 cm) deep, 3 or 4 in (7.5 or 10 cm) both read as a neat band; with a bold stripe, the thinner one looks calmer.
Does a knotted-stripe cushion need contrast piping?
Rarely. Self piping lets the stripe run over the edge and down the side without a break, as on this corner. A contrast welt would add a fifth color and a second line competing with the knots.
Which pillows go with a black and cream striped bench cushion?
Plain ones, in gray or cream. With four tones already in the weave, a patterned pillow fights the knots. A black-and-white tiled floor or a white kitchen banquette gives the stripe room to breathe.
