Measuring for a Mocha Corduroy Kids Floor Sofa in a White Room

One dark shape in a white room. Before you choose its color, measure the floor it will stand on.

The quick answer

Measure the free floor for a kids floor sofa, not the room: the length and depth left after the radiator, shelves and door swing, with some floor kept clear at each end. Then check that the backrest fits inside that depth. This mocha corduroy play couch works because it sits at the rug's edge with open floor around it.

The plate: five marks on a white room

Five marks on the plate, from the mocha sofa to the teddy on the shelf, show how one dark shape organizes a white room.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Reading the plate

The plate is mostly white. White curtains, white walls, a white cube bookcase. Then one low brown shape near the floor. The eye goes there first. So does a child.

The kids floor sofa sits at the rug's edge with the window to one side. Daylight comes through floor-length sheers and crosses the ribs at a low angle. Each wale throws a small shadow. That is why corduroy looks deeper here than it would under a ceiling light.

The yellow daisy pillow and the blue star pillow are not random. Yellow repeats the warm book spines on the shelf. Blue repeats the cool ones. Toys and furniture begin to feel like one family.

The rest is scale. A plush dinosaur and an owl sit at child height. A teddy on top of the bookcase answers the low sofa from across the wall. Picture books, blocks and a wooden car stay on the gray grid rug, where they get used. A fabric bin, a framed goose print and plush bunnies on a ledge fill the upper wall, so the floor can stay open.

Four measurements, in this order

  1. Measure the free floor, not the room

Run the tape from the radiator or the shelf edge, not from the wall behind it. The number you want is what is left.

  2. Take the depth to the walking line

Measure from the wall to where people walk. The backrest sits against the wall and takes its share of that depth.

  3. Keep the ends clear

Leave a hand's width of floor. A floor sofa pressed against a radiator or a bookcase looks squeezed and is hard to clean around.

  4. Tape it, then check the order

Mark the footprint with painter's tape for a day. Before production, read the color name on the order once more.

A real project

Five floor cushions, five children, one wrong color caught

A parent wrote to the workshop for five floor cushions, each 28 x 64 in (71 x 163 cm). Durable, but soft. One for each child and their friends.

The workshop suggested its soft microfiber. It is more durable than linen, thinner than velvet and soft to the hand. The parent chose mustard, purple, blue and green. The workshop suggested orange for the fifth.

The order came through as sour cherry. We changed it to orange before cutting. Most mistakes live there, between the message and the order form.

How much floor is left in your room once the radiator has its share?

Five cushions. Five colors. No arguments about whose seat is whose.

Buyer questions: offers, gift covers and the courier

  1. A common question

Is there any room on the price if I order more than one set?

    The workshop's answer

Some. Repeat buyers ordering extra sets have been given a lower price per set, and reasonable offers have sometimes been met in the middle. Large cuts are not possible, because margins on handmade cushions are small.

  2. A common question

Small pillow covers in a different color came in the box. Are they part of my order?

    The workshop's answer

No. They are a free gift, not part of the paid order, and they come without inserts. They may arrive in the hardware box and in a color different from the sofa.

  3. A common question

Will the courier bring the sofa to my door, and can I pick the day?

    The workshop's answer

Delivery is to your door or apartment, and the courier may call first. Tell the workshop a preferred day, time or safe place, such as the backyard, or ask for it to be left with a neighbor. Tracking arrives before dispatch, and some buyers have moved the delivery day themselves through the tracking link.

Measure a kids floor sofa from the radiator, not the wall: the number that matters is the free floor left over, backrest included.

Questions buyers ask next

Where do I measure the depth for a kids floor sofa that has a backrest?

From the wall to the line where people walk. The backrest sits against the wall inside that depth, so the seat a child actually sits on is the total minus the backrest. Check both numbers before ordering.

Why does mocha corduroy look deeper beside a window than under a ceiling light?

Low side light crosses the ribs, and each wale casts a small shadow, so the pile reads darker and more textured. Overhead light flattens the ribs. Place a corduroy floor sofa beside a window to show the texture.

Can each child get a different color floor cushion in the same order?

Yes. One parent ordered five 28 x 64 in (71 x 163 cm) cushions in mustard, purple, blue, green and orange. Mixed colors give each child a seat of their own; check every color name on the order before production.
