A green-and-cream striped bench cushion, checked seam by seam

A stripe tells on its maker. If it wanders at a corner, everyone in the room sees it, so I took the questions first and then went over this bench with a pin between my teeth.

The quick answer

A well-finished striped bench cushion carries its stripes from the top straight down the boxing and keeps its self piping in one unbroken line. On a storage bench, split the cushion where the lid opens: one buyer's bench of about 120 × 21 1/2 in (305 × 55 cm) became three pieces, so every section still lifts.

Questions first: ties, foam and a fair price

Common questions about ties, foam and price, with the workshop's answers.

  1. A common question

Could you sew straps or ties on the back of a large backrest so it's easier to lift?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop sews ties on the back, near the top, where they can't be seen from the front.

  2. A common question

Can I buy just the foam for L-shaped backrests, without covers?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. L-shaped backrest inserts are sold as foam only, for example as a pair, through a dedicated order link the workshop sets up.

  3. A common question

What would an 18 × 68 1/4 in linen bench cushion come to, and is there any room on the price?

    The workshop's answer

Custom sizes are quoted one by one, and that cushion settled a little under its first quote after a short conversation. Custom listings are priced in US dollars, so a total shown in another currency can differ slightly from your own conversion.

Now, the reading

Where the stripes turn the corner

Narrow forest green and cream stripes cross this bench cushion front to back, and at the front edge they don't stop. They drop down the boxing as vertical bands, lined up with the top, so the long seat reads as one neat row. That kind of alignment has to be planned at the cutting table, before a single seam is sewn, and it's the first place I look.

The self piping is the second. It's cut from the same stripe and runs in one line along the front, with no dip at the corners. A straight welt is a kind of honesty. I learned that years ago on a ticking cushion I'd cut half a band off true. I told the client it was deliberate. She didn't believe me either.

Two plump cream velvet pillows lean on the wall behind. The velvet catches light and invites you to lean; the woven stripe stays flat and graphic. Their color comes from the pale stripe, not the dark one, which keeps a long bench light. A sheer linen curtain filters the afternoon so the green never goes murky, dried seed heads in a speckled vase repeat the cream, and a jute rug puts something rough underfoot to balance all that smooth pile.

If you're drawn to striped cotton and ticking, read the Pattern on stripe direction first. And how many sections does your bench lid open in, dear? Hold that number; it matters below.

Maggie's finishing checklist for a striped bench

  • Stripes cross the top front to back and carry down the front boxing without a jog.
  • The self piping runs in one straight line, with no dip at the corners.
  • Box corners sit square, with no pucker where the piping turns.
  • The zipper edge faces the wall, where nobody has to look at it.
  • On a storage bench, the seams fall on the lid lines.
  • Large backrests get ties sewn near the top, hidden on the back.
A real project

A 120-inch lid in three pieces

A buyer messaged the workshop about a storage bench of about 120 × 21 1/2 in (305 × 55 cm). The lid opened in three sections, and two of them weren't rectangles.

The workshop asked the right question first: one cushion or three? One piece is simpler. Three cost more, because every piece means extra cutting, extra sewing and its own zipper. But one long cushion on a three-part lid means lifting the whole thing to reach anything inside.

The buyer chose three, each cut to its own lid, odd shapes and all. For that set, 4 in cost the same as 3 in, so they went up to 4 in (10 cm) while they were at it. Sensible on both counts.

The lesson: Split cushions along the lid sections so storage still opens.

On a striped bench cushion, the stripes should cross the top front to back and carry straight down the boxing, so a long seat reads as one row of bands.

Questions buyers ask next

Why do stripes usually run front to back on a bench cushion?

Front-to-back stripes cross the seat and can drop down the boxing as vertical bands, which makes a long bench look ordered. On very long cushions the width of the fabric roll can limit the direction, so ask before ordering a stripe.

Is self piping or contrast piping better on a striped cushion?

Self piping, cut from the same stripe, keeps the pattern in charge and makes the edge look tailored. A contrast welt draws a line around the seat, which can fight a busy stripe, so choose it only when you want that outline.

What back pillows suit a green-and-cream stripe?

Take the pillow color from the pale stripe. Cream velvet against a green-and-cream woven stripe keeps the bench light, and the soft pile against the flat weave makes the seat and back look layered rather than matched.

Is a thicker bench cushion always more expensive?

Not always. Price depends on the size, the fabric and the number of pieces. On one three-piece storage bench set, 4 in (10 cm) came at the same price as 3 in, so the buyer took the thicker foam.
