One gray window seat cushion, wall to wall: how a deep recess became the room's best seat

Rosa looks down on a dove gray cushion that fills a white recess end to end, and walks through the before-and-after thinking that starts with a single cushion.

The quick answer

A window seat cushion in a deep recess works best as one piece running wall to wall, cut to the depth measured at both ends and the middle, because recesses are rarely square. One full-width cushion looks calmer than two halves and lets you stretch out. Hang curtains clear of the seat, choose a neutral that lets the view lead, and hide the zipper on the back edge.

Before: a painted ledge that only the cat used

Every deep window recess I have ever walked into started life the same way: a white painted ledge holding the mail, a potted fern and, if you were lucky, the cat. Nobody sat there. It was hard, cold by the glass, and too pretty for a coffee cup.

Now look at the after. One dove gray window seat cushion runs the full width of the recess in a single piece, and from this high angle you can see the part that matters most: both ends are cut to meet the side walls. No gap for crumbs, no gap for dust, no gap for the earring you would otherwise hunt for all winter. The cushion follows the whole depth of the seat, so you can lean back against the window frame, pull up a chair for company, and stay a while.

The fabric is a soft chenille-style weave with an ivory fleck, from the jacquard and damask shelf, and self piping follows the front edge so the cushion has an outline against white paint. Gray was the smart call. The lawn and shrubs outside do the decorating, and a quiet seat lets them.

Then the supporting cast. White casement windows with their stays let in a whole wall of daylight, which is why this became a reading spot. The pair of linen curtains hangs on either side and never rests on the cushion, so the front edge keeps its shape. The white painted base disappears into the wall, and the beige carpet sits close to the cushion's own color, keeping the room soft. Nothing competes; everything points at the window.

If your recess is this deep, a single full-width cushion looks calmer than two halves and is far better for stretching out. Start with the window seat measuring pattern, and browse more window seat cushions and living room cushions. What's living on your window ledge right now, neighbor?

Three angled cushions and a date circled on the calendar

A buyer abroad sent the workshop measurements in millimeters for three angled cushions for a corner sofa, all about 4 in (100 mm) thick. Angled sofa pieces are trapezoids, and each was measured on its own: depths of 20, 19⅝ and 19⅞ in (510, 498 and 505 mm), back edges of 32, 80¼ and 32¾ in (813, 2040 and 832 mm), and front edges of 23⅝, 63¼ and 23¼ in (600, 1608 and 590 mm).

Look at those depths. Three pieces for one sofa, and no two the same. Rooms are like that.

The buyer also had a date to meet, and the standard queue of more than 250 orders was not going to reach it. So the workshop offered paid priority, moved the order to the front, and planned to hand it to the courier on the Monday. When a makeover has a party attached, say so before you order, not after. The trapezoid measuring pattern shows how to take those edges.

Three window-seat questions: zippers, soft fabric, wedge backs

  1. A common question

Where does the zipper end up, and what happens if it comes out on the side people see?

    The workshop's answer

Zippers go on the back edge or the underside, where nobody looks. When a cut-out cushion arrived with its zipper facing up, the workshop sewed a new cover with the zipper on the bottom and sent it out at no charge.

  2. A common question

What is the 'soft fabric' option actually made of?

    The workshop's answer

The fabrics on the soft chart are 100% polyester: a durable, easy-care upholstery weave with a soft hand. The covers are machine washable at 86°F (30°C), and it is one of the best-selling fabric families in the workshop.

  3. A common question

My bench lost its old back cushions years ago. Can you make wedge-shaped ones to go with a new seat?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send a reference photo or a simple diagram of the wedge with its dimensions, and the backs are quoted together with the seat cushion.

A window seat cushion in a deep recess should be one piece, wall to wall: two halves leave a seam right where you stretch out.

Questions buyers ask next

Should a recess window seat cushion touch the side walls or stop short?

Touch them. A cushion cut to meet both side walls leaves no gap for crumbs, dust or lost earrings, and it cannot slide sideways. Give the exact measured width rather than rounding down, and measure at the front and the back, since old walls lean.

Can curtains hang down over a window seat cushion?

Beside it, not on it. Curtains resting on the cushion crush the front edge and wear the fabric. Mount the rod wide enough that the panels fall on either side of the recess, as they do in this room, and the cushion keeps its shape for years.

Why does my window recess measure deeper at one end?

Old walls and plaster are rarely square, so a recess can run deeper at one end than the other. Measure the depth at both ends and in the middle, give all three numbers, and the cushion can be cut to follow the recess instead of fighting it.
