A gray leopard custom bench cushion, and where the budget really goes

One slim cushion in a quiet animal print, one blue pillow, one butter-yellow wall. Right, then: let's read it with the budget open, because thickness moves the price far more than pattern does.

Soft gray spots against butter yellow: a gentle take on animal print for a bedroom or dressing corner.

The quick answer

On a custom bench cushion, spend on accurate measurements and the right thickness, and save on extras you won't notice. Thickness and bolster size raise a quote far more than a print does: going from 4 in (10 cm) to 8 in (20 cm) with an 11.8 in (30 cm) bolster pushed one five-set order well past the listing.

Slim on purpose: what this photo spends and what it saves

The cheapest cushion is the one you buy once, and the second cheapest is the slim one.

Look at this bedroom bench. The bench cushion is a gray snow-leopard print on cotton canvas, box-edged, with self piping cut from the same cloth. It is kept thin enough that the white frame and the oak top still show. That is a design choice and a budget choice at once: less foam, a shorter side wall, less fabric around the box.

The print earns its keep quietly. Gray is the neutral colorway of a loud pattern, so it gives you spots without drama and will still look right long after the amber version has worn out its welcome. Staying power in taste is a real saving, dear, even if it never shows on a receipt.

Every prop has a job. The white robe on the oak peg rail says this bench is for dressing, not display. The swing-arm lamp keeps the gray bedside table clear and lights the seat. A jute rug warms the cool print underfoot, and the paneled wardrobe and vintage books keep the palette honest. One blue linen pillow picks up the gray spots and pushes back against the butter-yellow wall. One pillow, not three: another line you don't need to buy.

Five benches, one photo, and a thickness that doubled

A buyer wrote to the workshop needing five bench cushions with back bolsters for a busy venue, all matching one inspiration photo, in washable, pre-shrunk fabric that could take heavy use.

The workshop's usual build for that kind of seat is a 4 in (10 cm) mattress with an 8 in (20 cm) bolster: 39.4 in (100 cm) of total depth for 31.5 in (80 cm) of actual seating. The buyer wanted more. Each mattress was to be 31.5 x 78.7 in (80 x 200 cm) and 8 in (20 cm) thick, with an 11.8 in (30 cm) bolster along the full length.

The quote came back well above the listing, and the workshop explained it in one breath: double the thickness, a much bigger bolster. It also flagged that the two linens under consideration were cream-white, while the photo leaned gray. Timing was quoted at 10 days to make and 3 to 5 days to deliver.

I once compared a thick quote with a thin one myself, years ago, and felt very clever until I read the sizes. Agree on thickness and bolster diameter first. Then compare prices. The bench cushion builder lets you try both before you ask.

Buyer questions: a trapezoid check, piping, and a flat-pack bench

  1. A common question

My trapezoid bench has slanted sides. How can I check my numbers before you cut?

    The workshop's answer

Each slanted side must be longer than the straight depth. One drawing listed a 57.9 in (147 cm) top, an 89.8 in (228 cm) bottom and a 16.9 in (43 cm) depth, with a slanted side also at 16.9 in. The depth had been written twice: both sides measured 22.8 in (58 cm), for a true depth near 16.3 in (41.5 cm). Measure each angled edge corner to corner.

  2. A common question

Some of your photos show piping and some don't. Will my cushions have it?

    The workshop's answer

Only if you ask for it. Piping is chosen per order, so say which look you want. One buyer got piping all the way around a corduroy cushion; another, who wanted the seam hidden on a modular ottoman, got no visible piping on the outside.

  3. A common question

Can you make cushions for IKEA BESTA benches?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop has quoted a pair at 70.9 x 16.5 in (180 x 42 cm) and 47.2 x 16.5 in (120 x 42 cm), both 2.75 in (7 cm) thick, in matching colors and piping. A custom thickness like that is no trouble.

Questions buyers ask next

What raises the price of a custom bench cushion the most?

Size and thickness. In one set of quotes, doubling the thickness from 4 in (10 cm) to 8 in (20 cm) and enlarging the bolster from 8 in (20 cm) to 11.8 in (30 cm) across moved a five-set order well above the listing price.

How thick does a bedroom dressing bench cushion need to be?

Slim is usually enough, because people sit there briefly to dress or put on shoes. A thin box cushion keeps the bench frame visible, uses less foam and costs less. Check the finished seat height against your bed and the room before you choose.

Is a gray animal print easier to live with than a bold colorway?

Usually. The neutral colorway gives pattern without drama, works against warm or cool walls and needs only one solid pillow. Here gray spots sit against a butter-yellow wall, with a single blue linen pillow picking up their cool tone.
