A Reading by MaggieBench Cushions

A thin arch jacquard cushion on a walnut bench, and why slim was the right thickness

Maggie reads a mid-century bench by a tall window and makes the case for the slim pad: proportion first, plush second, and the walnut left in plain view.

Soft gray half-moons on a walnut bench make a quiet reading perch under a brass arc lamp.

The quick answer

On a slender mid-century bench, keep the cushion thinner than the bench rail is deep so the wood profile stays visible. Here a slim box-edge pad in soft gray arch jacquard does exactly that. For comfort, add the cushion thickness to the bench height: that sum is your real seat height, so check it before choosing plush.

Right, then: the case for the thin pad

Right, then. The most tempting mistake with a pretty bench is to make it comfortable at the expense of looking at it.

This mid-century walnut bench has a slim rail, tapered legs and a profile you could draw in one line. The custom bench cushion on it is a gray-and-cream jacquard woven with soft half-moon arches, cut as a box-edge pad and kept thinner than the rail is deep. From across the room you read walnut, then gray, then walnut again. That stacking is the proportion.

I learned this the hard way, early on. A client asked for plush on a slender settee, I gave them plush, and the frame vanished. It looked like a mattress on legs. The remake was much thinner, and everyone was happier, the settee included.

So the rule on a slender frame: the pad is never deeper than the rail that holds it. On a sturdy built-in, go as plush as you like; our bench cushions show both.

Seat height is the other half. Bench height plus cushion thickness is where you will actually sit, so do that sum first. The seat height calculator does the arithmetic, and the Pattern on cushion measurements covers length and depth.

The props keep the seat clear. The gray fringed wool throw over one end softens the hard profile in the same gray as the cushion, so walnut and brass carry all the warmth. The brass arc lamp hangs its bare bulb over the seat: reading perch. Anemones, a stoneware mug and a small dish sit on the walnut side table, not on the pad. The beige abstract print repeats the arches, and the olive tree and the cream-and-gray rug finish a quiet corner in gray-green window light.

What does your bench rail measure, dear?

Three sections, diagonal buttons, one set quote

One buyer wrote in about a built-in bench in three sections and a very particular picture in mind: button-tufted cushions with flat sides, double piping, and the buttons set on the diagonal rather than in rows.

The sizes were exact to the eighth: 65 1/8 x 17 1/4 in (165.4 x 43.8 cm), 33 7/8 x 16 1/2 in (86 x 41.9 cm) and 40 3/8 x 16 7/8 in (102.6 x 42.9 cm). They ordered fabric samples first and chose a teal green velvet. Because the sizes sat just past the listing's price steps, they asked for one quote for the set, and the set price came in below the three added up.

One caution I gave them, and give you: tufted covers can't come off, so choose a fabric you are happy to spot clean.

Sizes
65 1/8 x 17 1/4 in, 33 7/8 x 16 1/2 in, 40 3/8 x 16 7/8 in

The lesson: Tufted covers are not removable, so pick a fabric you can spot clean; ask for a set quote when sizes straddle price bands.

Buyer questions: exact sizes, washable covers, backrest height

  1. A common question

Should I knock half an inch off my measurements so the cushion slides in?

    The workshop's answer

No. Send your true, exact measurements of the space. The workshop adds the fitting allowances during production, so the cushion fits as it should.

  2. A common question

Will the cover come off so I can wash it?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The cover comes off completely and can be washed, and the zipper runs along the back of the cushion.

  3. A common question

Is the back cushion as long as the seat, and how tall is it?

    The workshop's answer

The backrest is made the same length as the seat. Standard backrests are 16 in (40 cm) tall and 4 in (10 cm) thick; the thick floor-couch style runs 4 to 5 in. Height can be changed, from about 8 in up to 16 in or more.

Questions buyers ask next

How thick should a cushion be on a mid-century bench?

Thin enough that the rail and legs still show; a slim box-edge pad keeps the profile readable. Then check comfort by adding the pad's thickness to the bench height and comparing that with the seat height you want.

Can a tufted cushion have a removable cover?

No. Tufted covers are sewn through with buttons, so they stay on the foam. If you want buttons, choose a fabric you are happy to spot clean; if you want a washable cover, choose a plain box cushion.

Does a patterned jacquard suit a modern room?

Yes, when the pattern is soft and low in contrast. Gray-on-cream arches echo pale walls and a beige print, so the pattern reads as texture from across the room and the walnut stays the star.

How do I order cushions for a bench in three sections?

Measure each section exactly, to the eighth of an inch if need be, and ask for one quote for the set. When sizes land just past a listing's price steps, a set price can come in below the sum of the parts.
