A Reading by RosaWindow Seat Cushions
A letter about a cream bouclé window seat and the porch next door
Rosa writes to anyone torn between indoor softness and outdoor sense, with a tone-on-tone window seat as her proof.
SaveThe quick answer
A cream boucle window seat cushion does its best work indoors, in dry bright rooms, and looks calmest tone on tone with no piping. What an indoor seat can borrow from the porch is practicality: a second cover for the seasons, two pieces instead of one awkward L, and exact sizes. Humid porches call for mildew-resistant outdoor fabric instead.

Dear neighbor,
About that cream seat
Three shades of cream and not one line of piping. That's the whole trick of this window seat, and I want you to see it before you order anything.
The cushion is cream bouclé, box-edged, laid on pale shaker cupboards under sheer linen curtains. It's thick, about a hand's height, and that thickness matters. It throws a soft shadow along the front edge, so a pale cushion reads apart from a pale cabinet. There's no piping because one hard line would break the calm. A window seat cushion like this is all texture and light.
Look at the company it keeps. An oatmeal waffle-knit throw adds a second texture without adding a color. Two linen-bound books keep the palette inside the creams. Dried eucalyptus in a beige stoneware vase gives a soft outline against the glass, where bright flowers would shout. Two small bud vases and a mug on the sill tell you somebody actually sits here. And the Berber rug with its black diamonds holds the only dark lines in the room, so all that cream has something to stand on.

Five pins, from the unpiped box edge to the Berber rug that grounds all the cream.

- Unpiped cream box
No piping, because a single hard line would break the tone-on-tone calm.

- Stacked books
Pale covers keep the palette inside three shades of cream.

What the porch can lend this seat, and what it can't
Now the outdoor-to-indoor part, which I learned on more porches than I can count.
From the porch, borrow the habits. Porch people order a second cover because weather changes; you can do the same for the seasons and trade your cream for something warmer in winter. Porch people split long cushions so they're easy to lift; an L-shaped bench indoors is happier as two pieces meeting at the corner than as one big L. And porch people measure hard, because a cushion an inch off slides every time you laugh.
From the parlor, keep the softness. Bouclé is a loop pile made for hands and bare knees on a sunny sill; its care is in bouclé and teddy snags and care. Out on a humid porch the rules change. There, pick a mildew-resistant outdoor fabric and let the cozy cloth stay inside.
What's sitting on your sill right now?
Two little bolsters, and then the porch chairs
A buyer wrote to the workshop for a window seat, 20 x 73 in (51 x 185 cm), with two cylinder armrest pillows. The first reading of the note was 20 in (51 cm) diameter bolsters, which would have put two barrels on a bench. The buyer clarified: 7 in (18 cm) across and 20 in (51 cm) long, in the same linen as the seat, with piping in a second linen.
They liked the result enough to come back for outdoor chair and back cushions with rounded corners. The shop steered them away from chenille for their humid climate and toward mildew-resistant outdoor fabrics, and offered close-up photos to help with color matching.
So write a bolster as two numbers, diameter and length, and let the weather choose the porch fabric. Sizes are laid out in bolster pillow size and diameter.
Buyer questions: a second cover, an L, an inch
- A common question
Could I get a second cover so I can switch fabrics with the seasons?
The workshop's answerYes. Order the cushion as usual, then message the second color. The shop sets up a private link for the extra cover at half the cushion price, which comes out lower than the separate cover-only listing.
- A common question
For an L-shaped banquette, is one L cushion better than two separate ones?
The workshop's answerOne L-shaped cushion can be made, but it isn't recommended: it costs considerably more and leaves much more room for error. Two cushions meeting at the corner usually fit more cleanly and are easier to handle and wash. A photo of the bench helps decide.
- A common question
My cushion came about an inch wider than I ordered. What tolerance is normal, and does piping count?
The workshop's answerHandmade cushions and covers can vary by about 1/2 to 1 in (1.3 to 2.5 cm). Measure the cushion body, not the outside of the piping, because piping adds a little to the outer size. If the finished size must include the piping, say so when ordering.
On the cutting table
| Piece | Window seat cushion on pale shaker cupboards |
|---|---|
| Fabric | Cream bouclé (loop pile) |
| Piping | None, to keep the tone-on-tone calm |
| Edge | Box, about a hand's height thick |
| Handmade tolerance | About 1/2 to 1 in (1.3 to 2.5 cm) |
| Bolsters, from a past order | 7 in (18 cm) diameter x 20 in (51 cm) long |
| Second cover | Can be ordered with the cushion for seasonal swaps |
| For a humid porch | Mildew-resistant outdoor fabric instead |
| Best for | Bright, dry living rooms and reading nooks |

Have this made — ask Rosa’s workshop
Swings sway, rockers rock, dogs circle three times. Tell the workshop what your seat goes through, and they will plan for it. — Rosa
Leave your details and the workshop will call you to confirm measurements, fabric, foam and piping. No prices, dates or payment on this page: it is a request, not an order.
Give a bolster two numbers: 7 in (18 cm) across and 20 in (51 cm) long makes an armrest pillow; 20 in across makes a barrel.

Questions buyers ask next
Should a cream boucle cushion have piping?
Usually not in a tone-on-tone room. Piping draws a hard line around the cushion, and in a scheme of three creams that line becomes the loudest thing in view. Leave it off and let the box edge and its shadow define the shape.
Is boucle a good choice for a humid porch?
For humid spots, the shop points buyers toward mildew-resistant outdoor fabrics instead of soft indoor cloths such as chenille. Keep the bouclé for dry, bright rooms and compare outdoor swatches for anything that lives near an open door.
How thick should a window seat cushion be to stand out from pale cabinets?
Thick enough to cast a shadow along its front edge. The seat in this photo is about a hand's height, which separates cream fabric from cream paint. Check the sill height too, so the cushion does not end up above the window ledge.
Can a window seat cushion come with matching armrest bolsters?
Yes. One buyer ordered a 20 x 73 in (51 x 185 cm) window seat with two bolsters 7 in (18 cm) across and 20 in (51 cm) long, in the seat fabric with piping in a second linen.
