A caramel bouclé window seat cushion, and how it will age

A letter about one long caramel seat under arched windows, and what juice, muddy paws and July sun will do to it.

The quick answer

A caramel bouclé window seat cushion ages well with kids and sun if the cover zips off and the color sits in the middle of the room. The cover washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Bouclé loops can catch claws, so homes with a cat or a busy dog do better with a pet-friendly weave.

Savannah ·

Dear neighbor,

Thank you for the photograph. It has been propped against my sugar bowl all week.

A white built-in bench under two tall arched windows, capped in oak, and on it one long caramel bouclé cushion with a boxed edge and self piping. The oak cap works like a picture frame, and the cushion stops a touch short of the front so a strip of wood shows.

Caramel is the smart color. It sits between the honey oak and the terracotta print, lighter than one and darker than the other, so the seat looks settled. Only two pillows, cream and sage, pushed to the wall end. That leaves the window seat cushion free for somebody to stretch out with a book.

The olive tree hands its gray-green to the sage pillow. The sheer curtains soften the light along the whole seat, and the striped rug repeats terracotta and sage at your feet.

Where my eye landed

Five spots on the photograph, from the seat up to the art on the wall.

  1. Caramel bouclé cushion

Caramel sits between the oak cap and the terracotta art, so the seat links both.

  2. Cream lumbar

Cream on caramel keeps the contrast soft in an already bright room.

  3. Sage square pillow

The sage matches the olive tree and brings the plant's color onto the seat.

  4. Arched window

Arched glass throws soft light along the full length of the cushion.

  5. Terracotta art print

Terracotta shapes in the art repeat the cushion at a stronger value.

A real project

The window bench that wanted to be a sofa

A buyer messaged the workshop wanting a window bench cushion 70 x 22¾ in (178 x 58 cm) and a full 6¼ in (16 cm) thick. The workshop offered 6 in (15 cm), the thickest foam it cuts as standard, because it gives the same deep, sofa-like feel.

At that depth you stop sitting on the window and start sitting in it.

The lesson: 6 in (15 cm) is the thickest standard foam, and it sits like a sofa seat.

Kids, dogs, spills and sun: the porch test

Kids and dogs are the real quality control, so let me run this cushion past mine.

Spills. Every cover zips off the foam, the zipper hidden on the back edge or underneath. Blot the juice, then wash the cover inside out at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry it. Caramel forgives a faint mark that cream would announce to the whole street.

Pets. Bouclé is made of little loops, and loops catch claws. Tight, loop-free weaves snag far less. If a cat kneads or a big dog circles before lying down, choose from the pet-friendly weaves and keep bouclé for the pillows.

Sun. Indoor fabrics carry some UV resistance, so a sunny window seat is generally fine. Strong sun on one spot for hours can still fade a color slightly over time; sheer curtains help.

Wear. Inside is 32-density foam, about 2.0 lb/ft³, wrapped in polyester fiber. It holds its shape under a nap and a pile of cousins.

Three more questions that came with photographs

  1. A common question

Could you make an L-shaped floor sofa, set up like one I saw elsewhere?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Buy two sets and the corner backrest comes at no charge, or order a custom layout, such as a 27½ x 47¼ in (70 x 120 cm) seat with a full back beside a 27½ x 55 in (70 x 140 cm) seat backed at one end.

  2. A common question

My bench is very long, and the cushion has to be one piece. Can you do that?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, if the bench needs it. For runs like 113 or 117 in (287 or 298 cm), the workshop often suggests two pieces, which are easier to make and ship, but one piece is made on request.

  3. A common question

My bench has square legs at each corner. Can the cushion fit around them and tie on so it doesn't slide?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Order it as a custom shape and send a simple drawing with every exact measurement, notches included. For ties, write where each one goes and how long it should be; they cost extra.

A bouclé window seat cushion survives juice and muddy paws if the cover zips off and washes at 86°F. Its loops are the part that catches a claw.

Questions buyers ask next

Is bouclé a good window seat fabric if I have a cat?

It is a risk. Bouclé is a looped weave, and loops snag when claws knead them. Tight, loop-free weaves snag far less, so cat homes do better with the pet-friendly chart.

How do I wash a bouclé window seat cover?

Unzip it, turn it inside out and machine wash at 86°F (30°C) at most on a gentle cycle, with mild detergent and no bleach. Air dry it. The foam itself is not washed.

Will a window seat cushion fade in afternoon sun?

Mostly fine: indoor fabrics have some UV resistance. Very intense sun on one spot for hours can fade color slightly over time, and outdoor fabrics resist fading best.

Porch light's on — Rosa

P.S. The olive tree is not just for looks. Its gray-green is the reason that sage pillow looks like it was always there.
