A burnt orange patio bench cushion, ordered right the first time
One cushion, no props, and a color chosen against the wood. Callum reads the patio bench, then lays out the message that gets a cushion right on the first pass.
A burnt orange cushion in a small waffle weave makes an acacia dining bench comfortable for long outdoor meals. The color draws out the red in the wood.
The quick answer
To order an outdoor dining bench cushion right the first time, send the fabric code, the bench top's exact length and depth, and the gap under the tabletop. Here a burnt orange waffle weave, code S-79, is cut to the acacia bench's footprint with a box edge that softens the slats yet still slides under the table.
One cushion, no props, and the wood decides
The cushion does all the work here. No pillows, no throw, no lantern: an acacia dining bench on a concrete slab, and one burnt orange box cushion that makes the set look finished rather than decorated.
The color was chosen against the wood, and that is the first thing to copy. Acacia carries a red undertone. Burnt orange sits one step warmer, so it pulls that red forward and the bench and table read as a pair. Under an overcast morning sky the orange stays earthy instead of loud.
The weave is the second thing. This is a small waffle grid in outdoor acrylic, code S-79, and a textured surface hides crumbs and water marks better than a flat plain. With a covered barbecue a few steps away, smoke and splashes show less on texture too.
Third, proportion. This custom bench cushion is cut to the exact footprint of the bench top, so it stops at the ends and the legs and frame stay in view. The box edge is deep enough to soften the slats and low enough to slide under the tabletop. A firm core keeps the front corners square even where someone perches on the end with a plate on their knee. Self piping keeps the outline clean against a cedar fence, a lawn and a gray-sided house that need no competition.
What's the gap between your bench top and the underside of your table? That one number decides the thickness. The table height Pattern and the seat height calculator do the sum, and more benches like this live under patio and porch cushions.
Pinned by Callum: the acacia dining set
Five pins, from the squared front corner to the grill that chose the weave.

- Squared front corner
A firm foam core keeps the box corners square even where people perch on the end.
- Waffle-weave texture
The small woven grid hides crumbs and water marks better than a flat plain would on a dining bench.
- Acacia table
The orange cushion draws out the red undertone in the acacia, so table and bench match.
- Covered barbecue
This close to the grill, a textured fabric shows smoke and splashes less than a smooth one.
- Bench leg
The cushion stops exactly at the bench ends, so the legs and frame stay visible.

The first message, written like a work order
Name the fabric by its code
Send the code, friend, not the color name. Burnt orange is a mood; S-79 is a bolt of cloth. If you're torn between two, order swatches first and decide in daylight.
Measure the bench top itself
Length and depth of the wood, edge to edge. This cushion stops exactly at the bench ends because someone measured the bench, not the old pad.
Measure the gap under the table
From the bench top to the underside of the tabletop. The cushion has to slide into that space, so the thickness comes from it.
Draw every side and every obstacle
For anything that isn't a rectangle, mark every side, write the units beside each number, and mark handles, posts or legs as cut-outs. The quote checklist lists the rest.
Attach the drawing to the order
Upload it at checkout. The drawing becomes the template, and nobody has to guess.
A window handle, drawn in on the second pass
A buyer in the US drew a trapezoid window seat for the workshop and left the two side edges unmarked. The workshop asked for them. She sent them back and added something nobody had asked for: the position of the window handle, marked as a cut-out.
The seat ran 74 in (188 cm) long and 24 in (61 cm) deep. She uploaded the full drawing, cut-out included, with the order, and the cushion was cut around the handle instead of meeting it.
A boat teaches the same thing: the gap you forget is the one that leaks. Mark every obstacle on the drawing, handles, posts and hinges alike, and it gets cut around. The custom shape drawing Pattern shows how.
Buyer questions
- A common question
Can you make trapezoid cushions for a large corner bench?
The workshop's answerYes, but the workshop needs every side of each trapezoid, including the short end sides at the corners, and a plan drawing helps because it becomes the template. One corner bench took three trapezoid cushions about 26 3/4 in (68 cm) deep.
- A common question
What do I do when something spills on velvet? Does it have a stain repellent, and can I dry clean it?
The workshop's answerBlot the spill quickly with a dry cloth. The cover zips off and can be machine washed at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. The velvet has no stain-repellent coating, so the protection is that the cover comes off and washes. There are no dry-cleaning instructions; the gentle 86°F wash is the recommended care, though a professional cleaner could assess the fabric.
- A common question
What's the Martindale rub count on fabric 132 in black?
The workshop's answerThe workshop doesn't have an exact lab Martindale figure for that fabric. It describes it as a premium heavy-duty upholstery fabric, chosen for durability and wear resistance in daily bench use.

A burnt orange cushion suits an acacia dining bench because the color sits one step warmer than the wood and pulls its red undertone forward.

Questions buyers ask next
What color cushion goes with an acacia dining bench?
A color one step warmer than the wood. Burnt orange draws out acacia's red undertone, so bench and table read as a matched pair rather than wood with a cushion set on top.
Is a textured fabric better for an outdoor dining bench?
Near food and a grill, usually yes. A small waffle weave hides crumbs, water marks, smoke and splashes better than a flat plain weave, which shows every mark on its smooth face.
Should a patio dining bench cushion overhang the ends?
Not on a bench like this. Cut to the exact footprint of the bench top, the cushion stops at the ends, so the legs and frame stay visible and the set looks built as one piece.
What should the first message for a custom cushion include?
The fabric code, the bench top's length and depth, the gap under the table, and for any shape that isn't a rectangle, a drawing with every side, the units, and obstacles such as window handles marked as cut-outs.
