A blush lumbar pillow, taupe shams and a wall that already has stripes

When the wallpaper carries the stripe, the pillows keep quiet. Élodie reads a romantic bed in warm late sun and follows the zipper to its hiding place.

The quick answer

A blush pink lumbar pillow works against sage striped wallpaper because it is a plain solid: the wall keeps the pattern and the pillow keeps the color. Order the knife-edge cover with its zipper along the bottom seam, turned toward the mattress, and wash it off the insert at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle before air drying.

The wall speaks, so the pillows listen

Sage and cream stripes climb the wall behind this bed, and every pillow in front of them has the good sense to be plain. Let one color speak and the others listen: here the wallpaper talks pattern, and the pillows answer in color alone.

Read the bed from front to back. The blush lumbar sits closest, a knife-edge rectangle with no piping, so its outline stays soft against the cream linen bedding. Behind it waits a blush square, then two taupe woven euro shams. Light to dark, front to back; that order is what gives a flat photograph its depth.

The taupe weave is heathered, a quiet mix of threads, so it grounds the pink without bringing in another color. The rust linen curtains are the blush's older sister, the same warmth turned deeper, and they tie the window to the bed. The curved cream headboard repeats the soft line of the knife edge, and warm raking sun turns the whole wall the color of weak tea.

To the left, a round rattan table holds a white candle and a trailing string-of-pearls plant: a small cottage vignette that gives the eye somewhere to rest besides pink.

Now the question nobody photographs, the fastening. A knife-edge lumbar has no side band to hide a zipper in, so ask for it along the bottom seam and face that seam toward the mattress. It disappears, and the cover still slips off for the wash. The notes on zipper placement cover the other shapes.

A real project

A corduroy mattress cover and two pillow sizes

A buyer wrote in after a long hunt for a corduroy mattress cover. They wanted a zippered cover for a mattress of 35 1/2 x 78 3/4 x 4 in (90 x 200 x 10 cm), plus matching cushion covers at 15 3/4 in (40 cm) square and 23 5/8 in (60 cm) square. The shop confirmed it could make them all and asked how many cushion covers were needed.

What made the order easy was the third number. A zippered cover is cut to the full box, so the 4 in (10 cm) depth matters as much as length and width, even on a thin daybed mattress. The guide to daybed mattress covers lists every measurement to send.

Buyer questions: spare covers, foam and the washing machine

  1. A common question

Can I buy a second set of covers in another color for my floor sofa?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Covers are sold on their own through a covers-only listing. They zip on and off over the fillings, which have their own inner covers, so you can change color or keep a spare set, and extra covers can ship together with a new sofa.

  2. A common question

What foam goes inside the cushions, and how dense is it?

    The workshop's answer

Medium-hard foam at 28 density, quoted as 28 to 32. The shop says it lasts for many years, and replacement foam is also sold on its own.

  3. A common question

Do the covers come off, and are they safe in the washing machine?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Every cover has a zipper and comes off completely, and all the fabrics, velvet and linen included, can be machine washed at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Air dry rather than tumble dry, and iron on low if needed.

Against striped wallpaper, keep the lumbar pillow a plain solid and take its color from the curtains: the wall already carries the pattern.

Questions buyers ask next

Should throw pillows be patterned when the bedroom wallpaper is striped?

Usually not. When the wall already carries a stripe, plain pillows keep the bed calm. Take their colors from the wallpaper and curtains instead, as this bed does with blush in front, taupe behind and rust at the window.

Where does the zipper go on a knife-edge lumbar pillow?

Along the bottom seam, because a knife edge has no side band to hide it in. Turn that seam toward the mattress or the seat and the zipper vanishes from view, while the cover still comes off for washing.

Why sit the blush lumbar in front of the taupe euro shams?

Light in front and dark behind adds depth to a bed wall. The pale blush comes forward and the heathered taupe recedes, so three layers of pillows read clearly instead of melting into one soft heap.
