A powder blue striped window seat cushion against white boards and oak

A letter from my porch about one blue stripe, a great deal of white and a small olive tree that knows its place.

A classic blue awning stripe fills a white paneled alcove; the outdoor-grade weave copes with sun from the window beside it.

The quick answer

A powder blue and white striped window seat cushion works in a white paneled alcove because the stripes run wall to front, echoing the vertical boards, while a light oak floor warms the cool blue. In a sunny window, an outdoor-grade weave copes better with daylight than ordinary cotton. Add one plant, not more pattern.

Neighbor,

A letter written in powder blue

It is nearly dark on my porch and I have a swatch of powder blue on my knee, because this alcove is a color lesson I want to hand you before you choose anything.

Look how little is going on. White tongue-and-groove on the walls, a white sash window, a light oak floor, a sloping ceiling that makes the nook feel tucked in. Into all that white goes one soft blue awning stripe. The stripes run from the wall to the front edge and carry straight down the boxing, so the pattern never breaks. Because the paneling runs up and down too, the boards and the stripes talk to each other, and the whole nook reads as one built piece.

Now the light. That window pours bright, even daylight across the seat, and ordinary cotton in a sunny window can fade. This cushion is an outdoor-grade, water-repellent weave used indoors, a practical pick for a seat that sits in the sun. Powder blue behaves well in strong light; it softens rather than shouts, and the white stripe keeps it crisp. Under the slope of the ceiling, where the light drops off, the white does the work of keeping the seat bright.

Two pillows in the same stripe sit close together as a backrest without crowding the narrow alcove. Then one small olive tree in a stone pot, the only thing in the frame that isn't blue, white or oak, and its silver-green is exactly the right note beside powder blue.

What color is the light in your window at four in the afternoon? Start there. More alcove shapes are in window seat cushions, the fabric family is water-repellent membrane, and the direction question is answered in which way a stripe should run.

Pinned by Rosa: five spots in the paneled alcove

Five pins: the awning stripe, the piped front edge, the striped pillows, the V-groove boards and the little olive tree.

  1. Blue awning stripe seat

Stripes run from wall to front edge, so the pattern carries on unbroken down the boxing.

  2. Piped front edge

Piping in the stripe keeps the long front line sharp against the white paneled base.

  3. Striped piped pillow

The pillows repeat the seat stripe and double as a soft backrest in the narrow alcove.

  4. Vertical V-groove paneling

Vertical boards echo the stripes, so the nook feels designed as one piece.

  5. Potted olive tree

One small olive softens all the white and adds a silver-green that suits powder blue.

Buyer questions: inside measurements, free ties and tufting

  1. A common question

My bench has a wood frame around the seat. Do I order its exact size or go a little smaller?

    The workshop's answer

If the cushion sits inside a frame, measure the inside of the bench wood to wood and order exactly that. Don't use the bench's outside dimensions; the cushion is made to fit the inside space.

  2. A common question

Can you put ties on so the cushion stays put, and what does that add?

    The workshop's answer

Nothing: ties are added free of charge. Ask for them in the personalization note and say where you want them, for example 6 in (15 cm) in from each short end.

  3. A common question

Could my bench cushion be tufted?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, and tufting is free. Write that you want it tufted in the personalization box, and the workshop sends back a photo showing the buttoned design, sometimes very soon after you order.

A real project

Caterpillar yellow and the back supports that got cut

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a kids' room window: two cushions of 27 x 46 in (69 x 117 cm), 4 in (10 cm) thick, in a cheerful caterpillar yellow. The wish list grew from there, the way wish lists do in a kids' room: three 27 x 12 in (69 x 30 cm) cylinder pillows and two tall back supports, sized so they wouldn't block the view out the window.

The back supports were the snag. Making them 12 in (30 cm) thick added a good deal to the cost, so the workshop priced each piece separately and the buyer trimmed the order to the two seat cushions. That is how it should work: see every piece on its own, then decide.

Before paying, the buyer asked about sun. The answer was plain: the fabric resists fading but is not waterproof. The workshop also agreed to send photos before shipping, which is exactly the kind of promise I like to hear before a yellow that bright goes into a kids' room.

In a white window seat nook, one soft stripe is enough: if the paneling runs up and down, run the stripes wall to front and the nook reads as one piece.

Questions buyers ask next

Can an outdoor-grade fabric be used on an indoor window seat?

Yes. An outdoor-grade, water-repellent weave indoors is a practical choice for a sunny window seat, where some ordinary cottons can fade. Ask for a sample first so you can judge the feel against your hand.

Should awning stripes run front to back or along the length of a window seat?

Front to back, from the wall to the front edge, carries the stripe down the boxing without a break and suits vertical paneling. Stripes along the length stretch a short seat visually. Pick one direction and match the pillows to it.

Will a water-repellent window seat cushion survive a spilled drink?

A water-repellent weave makes a spill bead up so you can blot it, but it is not waterproof, and liquid left sitting can soak through. Blot quickly and let the cover dry flat.
