A speckled bouclé window seat cushion, and the firm foam that keeps its line

Salt-and-pepper bouclé on a floating oak bench, a French press and one tulip. What you cannot see makes it work: the foam.

The quick answer

A custom window seat cushion is built on high-density polyurethane foam of about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), medium-firm to firm, wrapped in polyester fiber. It is not memory foam, so the box edge stays square along a long bench. Three inches gives a neat, low profile on a window seat; four inches is the everyday standard.

Five pins on the plate: the speckle, the coffee, the tulip, the photograph and the rug.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Black, white and one unbroken line

Some rooms are built from two colors and a lot of nerve. This one is white walls, dark oak floors and a salt-and-pepper bouclé cushion that belongs to both.

The white flecks in the black loops are what save it. A solid black seat under a white sash would look like a hole in the wall; the speckle picks up the paint above and the floor below, so the cushion sits between them like a handshake. It is cut to the exact length of the floating bench, wall to wall, with a crisp box edge and self piping, so the line under the window never breaks.

Three things sit on the seat: a glass French press, an open book, one white tulip in a water glass. Glass keeps the top light, and a single stem is plenty on a long seat. The black-framed photograph repeats the cushion's two colors on the wall, and the cream diamond rug repeats the speckle on the floor. One pattern at two heights, and not a throw pillow in sight. On my porch it would not last a day; in a reading nook it is restraint itself.

Under the bouclé: the foam that holds the line

Now, neighbor, the part you cannot see. Inside a standard seat or window-seat cushion is high-density polyurethane foam, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³). It feels medium-firm to firm, holds its shape and resists sagging. It is not memory foam, and on a window seat that is a mercy: you want to sit on it with your coffee, not sink into it.

The block is wrapped in polyester fiber, the Dacron wrap, before it goes into the cover, which softens the feel of the edges a touch. It is also cut a little larger than the cover, so the bouclé looks full and the box corners stay sharp. Hence the ruler-straight edge in this photograph.

Thickness is its own decision: 2, 3, 4 or 5 in (5 to 12.5 cm). Four inches is the everyday standard; 3 in gives a neater, lower profile under a window, and the buyer in the next story chose it. How do you sit in your window, upright with coffee or curled up with a book? The foam firmness finder will match either.

A real project

Thirty feet of window seat, four cushions, two pipings

A buyer got in touch with a little over 30 ft (9.40 m) of window seating running under four large windows, only 13 3/4 in (35 cm) deep. They ordered linen-look samples first, always my advice, and asked how long one cushion could be.

The answer: about 79 to 90 1/2 in (2 to 2.3 m) is the longest single cushion the workshop recommends. So the run became four cushions of 90 1/2 in (2.3 m), 3 in (7.5 cm) thick, in one linen-look color. The clever part: piping in one color on the top face and a second color on the bottom, so flipping a cushion changes the look of the whole window.

Long runs in pieces are easier to handle and ship, and a reversible welt gives two window seats for the trouble of turning one over.

Deep reds, big sizes and backrest fill

  1. A common question

Which fabric color comes closest to a deep red? My first pick looked pinker in the close-up photos.

    The workshop's answer

The workshop pointed to a linen-look code as the closest deep red, and said the linen-look fabrics also suit contrast piping best. The dark red in the main listing photo can be ordered too, even though it is not on the swatch card.

  2. A common question

Can you make a big custom window seat cushion, even a thick one?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Past examples include a 26 x 65 1/2 in cushion 9 in thick, and velvet bench mattresses of about 27 x 55 in (69 x 140 cm) and 27 x 62 in (69 x 158 cm). A small size such as 12 x 32 in can be added to the listing as an option on request.

  3. A common question

Should the backrest be solid foam like the seat, or something softer?

    The workshop's answer

Either. A backrest can be solid foam like the seat cushion, or filled with shredded foam, which is softer and more like a pillow. Throw pillows use the same shredded foam, broken into small pieces, for a soft, plump feel.

Questions buyers ask next

Is bouclé firm enough for a window seat?

The firmness comes from the foam, not the fabric. Bouclé is a looped cover over the same high-density foam as any other seat cushion, so it sits just as firm; the loops only change the feel under your hand.

Why does a new window seat cushion look flat when it arrives?

It ships vacuum-packed. After opening, most cushions recover within 24 to 72 hours, and full recovery can take 3 to 5 days. Take the cover off and knead the foam to help it along; you can sit on it meanwhile.

Can I get memory foam in a window seat cushion?

The standard is high-density polyurethane foam, not memory foam, because it keeps a flat, tailored shape. Custom inserts can be made in high-density memory foam on request; ask when you send your size.
