The Cutting Table · a common question

Does a thicker cushion cost more?

Also asked as:Same price or less, since it's less material? Why the price difference for height?

Most of the price sits in the footprint. Height matters only once it gets tall.

The quick answer

A thicker cushion costs only a little more within the usual 2-5 in (5-13 cm) range, where length and width drive the price and a thin cushion still takes the same fabric, labor and materials. Tall pieces differ: a roughly 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm) velvet cushion listed at twice its 6 in price at 12 in, and covers over 6 in (15 cm) are custom.

Why the footprint carries the cost

Price starts with length and width. That is where most of the fabric goes, and most of the sewing.

Thickness adds a strip of fabric around the sides and a little more foam. Between 2 and 5 in (5-13 cm), that strip is small, so the price barely moves. A thin cushion is not much cheaper, because it still needs the same cutting and the same hands.

Above 6 in (15 cm) it changes. The side strip grows, the filling doubles, the box gets heavy. Extra-thick 12 in (30.5 cm) floor cushions in large sizes are among the most expensive pieces the workshop makes, and they cost more to ship. Height is a feeling, so try yours in the seat height calculator before paying for inches you won't sit on. The floor cushion thickness guide and the ottoman cushions shelf show the common heights.

What thickness are you weighing, and for which seat?

Footprint first. Thickness second. Shipping last.

Getting one honest quote

  1. Send length and width first

They set most of the price. Add the thickness you want and the fabric.

  2. Group every piece

All sizes in one message get one total, often a little below the sum of the listing prices.

  3. Ask about a final price

On large, thick orders the workshop has sometimes offered a small final discount.

A 24 x 24 in velvet cushion at 12 in thick listed at twice its 6 in price: the extra fabric and filling, not a bigger footprint.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Is a thinner cushion cheaper than a 4 in one?

    The workshop's answer

Not by much. Price depends mainly on length and width, so send your dimensions first. A thin cushion still uses the same fabric, labor and quality materials.

  2. A common question

    Can you make a replacement cover for an ottoman cushion about 25.5 x 25.5 x 12 in (65 x 65 x 31 cm)?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. A cover that tall falls outside the standard sizes, so it is made as a custom order. At 6 in (15 cm) high or less it would have been a standard size.

  3. A common question

Why does a 12 in high cushion cost twice the 6 in listing?

    The workshop's answer

Height drives the price through extra fabric and filling. A roughly 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm) velvet cushion lists at double at 12 in, and the workshop's final offer on that piece came in a little under the list price.

  4. A common question

Why is a larger or thicker cushion so much more? Can you come down?

    The workshop's answer

More fabric, filling and handwork go in, and shipping a big piece costs more. The workshop sometimes offers a final price on quotes like these.

Questions buyers ask next

Is a 2 in cushion half the price of a 4 in one?

No. Within the usual range, thickness changes the price far less than length and width do. The thinner pad still takes the same cutting, sewing and fabric on its top and bottom faces, so the saving is small.

Can I order a 12 in thick floor cushion?

Yes. Extra-thick 12 in (30.5 cm) cushions are made in large sizes. They are among the most expensive pieces the workshop sews because of the extra fabric and filling, and oversized pieces cost more to ship.

What counts as a custom cover height?

Anything taller than 6 in (15 cm). Covers up to that height fall within the standard sizes; taller ones, like a 12 in (31 cm) ottoman cover, are quoted as custom orders.
