The Cutting Table · a common question
Can you make slipcovers for the sofa I already own?
Also asked as:Couch cover for this modular sofa?Five pieces plus a storage ottoman
A sofa from another maker, a color you've outgrown. The answer has a firm edge, and a gentler door right beside it.
The quick answer
No: the workshop doesn't make fitted slipcovers for a whole conventional sofa (arms, back and skirt) or for an unrelated multi-piece set, such as a five-piece sofa with a storage ottoman. What it can do is offer its standard cover sizes, or zippered covers for individual cushions in custom sizes if you send the measurements.
SaveKey facts

Where the line is drawn
A sofa is a sculpture of arms, back and skirt. Fitting cloth over all of it, pleat by pleat, is a different job from cutting a cushion cover, and the workshop doesn't take it on.
It also declines custom-fit covers for multi-piece sofas from other makers. A buyer in the US asked about a five-piece set with a storage ottoman; the answer was the standard cover sizes, not a tailored slipcover.
The door that stays open
Cushions are another story. Send the length, depth and thickness of each seat or back cushion, and the workshop cuts a zippered cover to those numbers. Your foam stays; only the color changes. The cushion covers hub and the covers for your own foam Pattern show how to measure.
For the workshop's own floor sofa, a covers-only set exists: two seat covers of 78.7 x 39.4 x 6.7 in (200 x 100 x 17 cm) and two L-shaped backrest covers of 39.4 x 39.4 x 15.4 in (100 x 100 x 39 cm), arms included.
What can be covered, and how
| Piece | Made? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Whole conventional sofa: arms, back, skirt | No | Not offered |
| Another maker's multi-piece sofa with ottoman | No custom fit | Standard cover sizes only |
| Individual seat or back cushions | Yes | Zippered covers cut to your measurements |
| The workshop's own floor sofa | Yes | Covers-only set, arms included |
| Crib-mattress play mat or crash pad | Yes | Zippered box cover, up to at least 61 x 61 x 10 in (155 x 155 x 25 cm) |
A new cover is a new color
If fresh covers are your chance at a new color, choose it in daylight. Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does. The three nubby weaves in the photo, raspberry, mustard-gray and a green shot with navy, show how a textured cloth carries two tones at once.
The workshop's own covers come off and wash easily, and extra covers have been offered at a discount, so a second color for winter is not a wild idea. Which color is your sofa waiting for, my friends? The screen versus daylight Pattern helps you choose.
Zippered cushion covers can be cut to your own measurements; a fitted slipcover over a whole sofa's arms, back and skirt is not made.

Buyer questions
- A common question
Could you make covers for another company's modular sofa, five pieces plus a storage ottoman?
The workshop's answerNo. The workshop declined custom-fit covers for that set and offers only its standard cover sizes for it.
- A common question
Can you make washable covers for the arms, back and skirt of my current sofa?
The workshop's answerA cover for a whole conventional sofa isn't possible. The workshop's own covers are easy to remove and wash, and it offered discounted extra covers, plus custom sizes if you send measurements.
- A common question
My cushion cover zipper is stuck. What now?
The workshop's answerIt's usually fabric caught in the teeth. Free the fabric, run the slider fully back and forward, and on snug covers press the cushion in while you zip. If it still fails, send the workshop photos or a short video of the slider and the teeth around it.
- A common question
What comes in the covers-only set, and in what sizes?
The workshop's answerFour zippered covers: two 78.7 x 39.4 x 6.7 in (200 x 100 x 17 cm) seat covers and two 39.4 x 39.4 x 15.4 in (100 x 100 x 39 cm) L-shaped backrest covers, enough for one sofa including the arms. Pillowcases come free; metal bars are extra.
Questions buyers ask next
Can you cover the cushions but not the sofa frame?
Yes. That is the part the workshop does make: zippered covers for individual seat and back cushions in custom sizes. Send each cushion's length, depth and thickness, and the covers are cut to fit your existing foam.
Where does the zipper go on a replacement cushion cover?
It can go on the back edge on request. On a trapezoid cushion, for example, it goes on the shorter back edge, and the zipper is sized to the shape so the foam slides out for washing even when the front is wider.
Are extra covers available for a sofa bought from the workshop?
Yes. The workshop's own covers remove and wash easily, and extra covers have been offered at a discount. For its floor sofa there is a covers-only set of four zippered covers, arms included, with pillowcases free.
