The Cutting Table · a checklist answer
Can you make one extra large floor cushion, like 59 x 59 in?
Also asked as:150 by 229 as one cushion?Custom floor cushion, 84 by 92 inches
Past a certain size, one slab of foam stops making sense. Two halves that push together can fold and put away, and the numbers below show exactly how the workshop splits them.
SaveThe quick answer
An extra large floor cushion is not made as one single piece; it is split into two halves that push together. A 59 x 59 in (150 x 150 cm) floor mattress becomes two 29.5 x 59 in (75 x 150 cm) pieces, and an 84 x 92 in (213 x 234 cm) nook cushion becomes two 42 x 92 in pieces. You pay for two cushions.

Before you order a floor cushion this big
- Measure the full floor area, wall to wall, and write the unit beside every number.
- Decide which way the join runs; on a nook, a front-and-back split keeps it less noticeable.
- Write the finished size of each half, such as two 29.5 x 59 in (75 x 150 cm) pieces.
- Give one thickness for both halves; the 84 x 92 in nook set was 4 in (10 cm) thick.
- Say whether the halves must fold together or put away, as on a mezzanine bed.
- Budget for two cushions, because a split is priced as two.
What won't come out as one piece
- One single 59 x 90 in (150 x 229 cm) cushion: it goes past single-cushion limits.
- A round floor cushion wider than 49 in (125 cm): 59 in (150 cm) across is too large.
- A split priced as one cushion: the order counts two.
How the big sizes split
| Asked for | Made as | Why that way |
|---|---|---|
| 59 x 59 in (150 x 150 cm) floor mattress | Two 29.5 x 59 in (75 x 150 cm) | Push together into the full square |
| 59 x 90 in (150 x 229 cm) | Two 29.5 x 90 in (75 x 229 cm) | Past single-cushion limits; joined to fold |
| 84 x 92 in (213 x 234 cm) nook | Two 42 x 92 in (107 x 234 cm), front and back | The join is less noticeable |
| 50 x 75 in (128 x 190 cm) mezzanine bed | Two 25 x 75 in (64 x 190 cm) | Put away when not in use |
| 125 in (318 cm) bench | Two pieces | Long runs are split as well |
Why two halves beat one slab
A floor cushion that wide is past what the workshop makes as a single piece, so it gets cut into two equal halves. Two equal pieces are also easier to ship and to handle at home. A 59 x 90 in (150 x 229 cm) request becomes two 29.5 x 90 in (75 x 229 cm) cushions that can be joined to fold.
Where the join falls matters, partner. On an 84 x 92 in (213 x 234 cm) nook, the halves were split front and back, so the line between them runs along the back wall and is less noticeable. On a mezzanine, two 25 x 75 in (64 x 190 cm) halves push together into a bed and put away separately.
Measure twice; the fabric remembers. Then check the height against the floor cushion thickness Pattern and browse floor cushions for shapes. How wide is the floor you are covering?
Split an 84 x 92 in nook floor cushion front and back into two 42 x 92 in pieces, and the join between them is less noticeable.

Buyer questions
- A common question
Can you make one really long or wide cushion, like 125 inches, or 59 x 90¼ in (150 x 229 cm)?
The workshop's answerNot as a single piece. A 125 in (318 cm) bench cushion is made in two pieces, and 59 x 90 in (150 x 229 cm) is past the limits, so it's made as two 29.5 x 90 in (75 x 229 cm) cushions that can be joined to fold. You pay for two cushions.
- A common question
Could you make a plain 59 x 59 in (150 x 150 cm) floor mattress with a simple finish?
The workshop's answerThe workshop suggested making it as two 29.5 x 59 in (75 x 150 cm) pieces instead of one.
- A common question
Can you make one giant 84 x 92 in floor cushion for our nook?
The workshop's answerNot in one piece. It was made as two 42 x 92 in cushions, one front and one back, so the join is less noticeable. That set was 4 in thick and came with 3 lumbar pillows.
- A common question
I need a floor mattress on a mezzanine that can be put away when nobody's using it. What are my options?
The workshop's answerTwo separate 25 x 75 in (64 x 190 cm) cushions that push together into a 50 x 75 in (128 x 190 cm) bed and can be put away.
Questions buyers ask next
How exact will each half be?
Sizes are made as written, not rounded, but a handmade cushion can vary by about 1/2 to 1 in (1 to 2.5 cm). Piping adds slightly to the outer size, so say if your total must include it.
Should each half be ordered a little smaller than the floor space?
No. Give the exact size of the space; the workshop handles sewing allowances and makes cushions to the full dimensions, so a snug fit works. Go smaller only where you want a gap between cushions or a lid has to clear.
Can a round floor cushion be made extra large instead?
Up to 49 in (125 cm) in diameter. Order the nearest listed size, such as 32 in for a 33 in round, and note your exact diameter. A 59 in (150 cm) round is too large to make.
