White L-shaped boat bow cushions with navy welting, taken apart for budget
Callum opens up a center-console bow seat from template to welt and marks which layers earn their cost in salt and sun, and which can wait a season.
SaveThe quick answer
On a boat cushion, spend on the template and the outdoor fabric, and save on the extras. This bow seat's stepped L-shape and flared backrest had to be traced, because hardly an edge is straight. White outdoor acrylic stays cooler in full sun, a separate back cushion can come off on fishing days, and sound foam only needs a new cover.
The cushion, cut open
Cover fabric. A removable, zippered cover. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry.
Piping. A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.
Fiber wrap. Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.
Foam core. About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.
Zipper. Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.
Base panel. The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.
Pinned by Callum: five points on a bow seat
Five pins, from the stepped corner where the seat turns around the console to the navy welt on top of the backrest.

- L-shaped seat corner
The seat steps around the console corner in one piece, so the shape had to be traced.
- Seat front edge
A crisp box edge keeps its line even after sun and spray.
- Navy backrest piping
Navy welting traces the top of the backrest and matches the seat.
- Hull-side back cushion
A separate back cushion follows the hull side and can come off on fishing days.
- White helm console
With everything else white, the navy welting is the only line the eye follows.

Layer by layer, from hull to welt
Hardly an edge on this bow seat is straight. Know that before you price one.
Start at the hull. White fiberglass, a stainless console frame, a helm with gauges, turquoise water and high tropical sun. Everything aboard is built for glare and salt, and the boat cushions have to be too.
Layer one: the template. Spend here. The seat steps around the console corner in one piece, and the backrest follows the flare of the hull. Nobody gets that with a tape and a guess. It gets traced, and the boat template guide shows how. A cushion cut from a good template fits the first time.
Layer two: the fabric. Spend here too. White outdoor acrylic stays cooler to sit on in full sun than a dark cloth. Indoor fabric does not belong on a deck. Rain doesn't negotiate, and salt spray is worse.
Layer three: the edge and welt. Save here. A crisp box edge keeps its line at the seat front after sun and spray. The navy welting is thin, and on an all-white boat it is the only line the eye follows. Pick a welt color that already lives aboard, a hull stripe or the canvas, and the cushions look factory-fitted with no extra design work.
Layer four: the back cushion. Save by splitting. It is a separate piece that follows the hull side and comes off on fishing days. When one part wears first, you replace one part.
Height. The seat is comfortable without lifting passengers high above the gunwale. Extra inches of foam on a bow are not a luxury, friend. They are a lean over the rail.
How many straight edges does your bow seat have?
Where to spend and where to save on a boat bow cushion
| Layer | Spend or save | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Template of the seat | Spend | A stepped L and a flared back can't be guessed; a traced shape fits the first time |
| Outdoor fabric | Spend | Outdoor use calls for outdoor-specific fabric, every time |
| Foam you already own | Save | If it is sound, order a cover only with its three exact dimensions |
| Welt color | Save | Borrow a color already on the boat so the cushions match from day one |
| Back cushion as its own piece | Save | Comes off on fishing days and can be replaced alone |
| Extra thickness | Save | More height on a bow seat near the gunwale is not more comfort |
The van bed that only needed a jacket
One buyer wrote in while building a bed platform in a camper van. The foam was already planned: a cold-foam mattress of 27 1/2 x 78 3/4 x 4 in (70 x 200 x 10 cm). All they needed was a corduroy cover, and the workshop quoted the cover alone.
That is the most honest saving on any cushion. If the foam is right, do not buy it twice. Order a cover and give all three exact dimensions: length, width and thickness.
The same goes for a boat whose foam is sound but whose fabric has done its seasons; read covers for existing foam first. Corduroy suits a van interior, mind, not a bow in the spray. More ideas for rolling homes live in van conversion cushions.
Buyer questions: matching squares, changed sizes, a bench with a back
- A common question
Can you make square outdoor pillows to match my outdoor bench cushion?
The workshop's answerYes. Squares in outdoor fabric can be ordered through the outdoor floor cushion listing, or the workshop sets up a custom listing. For anything used outside it insists on outdoor-specific fabric, and patterned outdoor fabrics with contrast piping were confirmed fine for outdoor use.
- A common question
I sent the wrong dimensions. Can I still change them after ordering?
The workshop's answerYes, as long as the fabric hasn't been cut. One outdoor order went from 45 x 39 in (114 x 99 cm) to 52 x 28 in (132 x 71 cm) with no price difference.
- A common question
How is an outdoor bench cushion with a matching back cushion priced, separately or as a pair?
The workshop's answerEach piece is priced on its own size and fabric. One quote in an outdoor fabric covered a 32 x 84 x 5 in (81 x 213 x 13 cm) bench cushion and an 8 x 84 x 4 in (20 x 213 x 10 cm) back cushion; you can check prices by picking the closest listed sizes.
On the cutting table: the center-console bow set
| Product | L-shaped bow seat with a separate backrest cushion |
|---|---|
| Fabric | White outdoor acrylic |
| Piping | Navy contrast welting on seat and backrest |

| Where to save | Cover only if the foam is sound; welt color borrowed from the boat |
| Best for | Center-console bows, cockpits and other templated boat seats |

On a boat cushion, spend on the template and the outdoor fabric. A traced L-shape fits the first time; a guessed one gets paid for twice.

Questions buyers ask next
Why do boat bow cushions need a template instead of a tape measure?
Bow seats step around consoles and backrests follow the flare of the hull, so few edges are straight. A traced template captures curves and angles that a list of lengths misses, and the cushion fits the first time.
Is white a practical color for boat cushions in full sun?
White outdoor fabric stays cooler to sit on than dark colors in strong sun. Pair it with a darker welt, such as navy, so the cushion shape still reads against a white deck and hull.
Can I recover old boat cushions instead of buying new foam?
Yes, if the foam is still sound. Order a cover only and give its exact length, width and thickness. If the foam has flattened or crumbles, replace it at the same time as the cover.
