A tobacco-striped window seat cushion, and choosing its edge and corners

Pull up a chair. This striped window seat has a tall box edge that makes it look built in, and the edge you pick decides that more than the fabric does.

Mixed-width brown stripes bring a vintage awning feel to a plain white window seat.

The quick answer

Choose a box edge for a window seat cushion when you want it to look built in: a side band gives straight, upright sides, and a tall one shows off a stripe. A knife edge tapers like a pillow and reads casual. Round or clip the corners only to match the seat, and for any angled shape give all four side lengths.

A five-inch box that looks built in

Look at the front corner first, neighbor. This window seat cushion is a tall box, around 5 in, with a side band standing straight up from the white paneled base. That height is why it looks upholstered rather than laid on.

The stripe does something clever at the edge. On top, tobacco brown and sand bands run the length of the seat; on the side band they stand upright, and self piping cut from the same cloth draws the line where the two meet. Brown stripes can look heavy, but the cream ground is wider than the brown bands, so the seat reads light with a warm rhythm.

Two pillows keep it company: sage linen, one flat color, and cream bouclé, one texture in the stripe's own ground. An oatmeal linen throw falls over the back corner and down the side, softening all that height, and soft daylight through the window does the rest. A seat like this gets fought over by the second afternoon. Which edge would yours want?

A trapezoid is four numbers, not one. A straight depth at the center helps them close.

Five pins on the striped seat

Five pins, from the tall striped side band to the throw that softens its back corner.

  1. sage linen pillow

A flat sage cloth calms the brown bands next to it.

  2. cream bouclé pillow

Bouclé brings texture in the same cream as the stripe's wide ground.

  3. linen throw

The throw falls over the back corner and down the side, softening the tall box.

  4. mixed-width brown stripe

Wider cream bands than brown keep a dark stripe reading light.

  5. tall striped side band

On a 5 in box the stripe runs down the side, so the cushion looks upholstered rather than laid on.

A real project

Fifty inches of front, and three sides missing

A buyer who already had their own fabric asked for a trapezoid window cushion, 4 in (10 cm) thick and about 50 in (127 cm) across the front. French-style, with the rolled edge. The workshop didn't quote yet. It asked for the lengths of all four sides first.

That's not fussiness. A trapezoid's front and back run parallel, but the two angled sides decide how the corners meet the walls, and one front width can describe a dozen different cushions. The trapezoid cushion calculator checks that your four numbers close.

The lesson: For a trapezoid, the front width alone is not enough; give all four sides.

Three questions about shapes, piping and inserts

  1. A common question

Can you cut a clipped trapezoid in a fabric I saw on another listing?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Order through the trapezoid listing with every dimension, and write the fabric codes in the personalization notes, for example main fabric P-60 with P-61 piping. Fabrics from any listing can be used.

  2. A common question

Do you have leather piping, something like cognac or saddle brown, for the welt?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Leather piping comes in three stock colors at no extra charge, and any other leather color can be made for a small surcharge.

  3. A common question

I already have two twin mattresses. Can I buy just the L-shaped backrest inserts and the bars?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Two L-shaped backrest inserts and four metal brackets were sold on their own through a custom listing link, with shipping included.

On a 5 in box window seat cushion, the side band shows as much as the top. Run the stripe upright on the band and the cushion looks upholstered, not laid on.

Questions buyers ask next

Is a knife-edge cushion ever right for a window seat?

Yes, when the seat is casual or the cushion is thin. A knife edge is fullest in the middle and tapers to the seam, so it reads relaxed and uses less fabric, but it won't fill a paneled box the way a square side band does.

Can I choose which way the stripes run on a window seat cushion?

Yes. Say in the order note which way they should run on top and on the side band. Direction changes the look more than color does, and a wide or mixed stripe shows it most.

What is a mock box edge?

A cushion cut from two panels only, with the corners pleated or stitched down to fake the depth of a box. The corners come out softer and rounder than a true box edge. Names vary between makers, so ask for a photo of the corner.
