A teal velvet window seat cushion, and the order message that gets one right

The best cushions start as a good message: one size, one color number, one clear drawing. This teal bench reads like one.

One bold teal velvet cushion carries this white window bench; gray diamond pillows and white linens keep it from feeling heavy.

The quick answer

To get a velvet window seat cushion right the first time, send the exact size in one unit, a numbered color from the chart, and a drawing for anything that isn't a plain rectangle, such as lids. One buyer who did that for a 25 x 17 in seat called the result a perfect fit and a perfect color.

Three questions from storage-bench owners

  1. A common question

My storage bench has lift-up lids. Can you split the cushion into sections that match them?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The cushion can be divided at the lid lines so each section lifts with its own lid. Send a clear drawing with every edge measured. If sections differ, say by about 1.5 in in depth, each needs its own drawing with front, back, both sides and the depth at each end.

  2. A common question

If I order a 40 x 80 inch cushion, does it come as one piece or in sections?

    The workshop's answer

One single piece. If you want sections, order each smaller cushion separately, for example four cushions of 40 x 20 in.

  3. A common question

Can you make a tufted velvet cushion 84 inches long and 24 inches deep?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. An 84 x 24 in tufted cushion in high-quality velvet was quoted, and other sizes such as 26 x 72 in can be made on request.

What a first-time-right message says

The orders that land right the first time say the same few things. Here's the list I'd tape to the fridge, neighbor.

  • Size, length by depth, one unit. Say which number is which.
  • A numbered color. Beige is a mood. Velvet color 33 is a fabric.
  • A drawing for anything not rectangular, every edge measured: lids, notches, angles.
  • One piece or several, said out loud. A cushion ordered at 40 x 80 in arrives as one piece.
  • Swatches first if the color must match something in the room; see fabric swatches before ordering.
  • Codes in the right box. The personalization note guide shows how.

What's the one detail you'd be most afraid of getting wrong?

Five pins on the teal bench

Five pins, from the velvet top to the eucalyptus on the sill.

  1. Teal velvet top

Saturated teal velvet shifts shade as light moves across it, giving a plain white bench real depth.

  2. Tall boxed side

A generous boxing height makes the cushion look substantial on a wide storage lid.

  3. Gray geometric pillows

Diamond-print pillows add pattern without competing with the single strong color of the seat.

  4. Folded white throw

White textiles break up the long run of teal and connect it to the painted woodwork.

  5. Eucalyptus in glass

Blue-green leaves repeat the teal in a softer key right at the window.

Reading the teal bench

Now the photograph. A white storage bench under a casement window, light oak floor, bright overcast daylight. On top, one teal velvet cushion, self piped, running the full length.

Teal is the only saturated thing in the room, and it sits on the biggest flat surface. That's why it reads as part of the house, not something tossed there. Velvet shifts shade as the light moves, so a plain white bench gets depth.

The boxed side is generous, to balance the chunky drawer front below. Three gray-and-white diamond pillows add pattern without a second loud color. A folded white towel on a waffle throw breaks the long run of teal and ties it to the woodwork. Eucalyptus in clear glass repeats the teal, softer.

The neutrals gather at one end, so most of the velvet stays on show. More shapes are in window seat cushions, the pile fabrics in velvet.

A real project

Color 33, and a perfect fit

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a small window seat: 25 x 17 in (64 x 43 cm), beige, velvet or chenille. The workshop set up a 17 x 25 in option on its custom window seat listing, and she chose velvet color 33 from the chart. Not a beige. Number 33.

When it arrived, she called it magnificent: a perfect fit and a perfect color.

Small seats are unforgiving; an inch is a lot of a 17 in depth. Confirm the exact size and the color number before production.

Order a velvet window seat cushion by color number, not color name: beige is a mood, but a numbered shade from the chart is a fabric.

Questions buyers ask next

Why put the bold color on the seat and not the pillows?

The seat is the largest flat surface on a window bench. Color there reads as part of the room's architecture, and neutral pillows then add pattern without a second strong color competing.

How tall should the cushion side be on a wide storage bench?

Tall enough to balance the bench front. A generous boxed side looks substantial on a wide lid above a chunky drawer; a thin pad on the same bench can look like an afterthought.

Does velvet look different through the day?

Yes. Velvet has a pile that shifts shade as light moves across it, so one teal reads lighter and darker along the bench. That movement gives a plain white storage bench depth.
