Three sage outdoor bench cushions, stacked so the edge does the talking

Hard sun, no shade, no bench. Just three cushions on a limestone wall, stacked to show the one thing a catalog photo hides: the edge.

The quick answer

For outdoor bench cushions, a box edge with self piping keeps the same height right to the front, so the seat reads square and flat; a knife edge thins toward the seam and reads like a pillow. Choose from close to 200 UV-resistant outdoor fabrics, all made to the same quality, and pick by color and texture.

Three questions patio owners ask

  1. A common question

Which of your fabrics are safe outdoors, and what's the difference between the outdoor charts?

    The workshop's answer

There are close to 200 outdoor fabrics, all UV-resistant and made for outdoor use, spread over four or five charts. They come from the same mill at the same quality; only texture, color tone and pattern differ. The HM range is the one the workshop recommends first.

  2. A common question

If I order several outdoor cushions together, is there a discount?

    The workshop's answer

Usually, yes: multi-piece orders have been given package prices. Five outdoor seat cushions of 31½ × 31½ × 3 in (80 × 80 × 8 cm) plus five bolsters came in well below the single-piece total. In past cases no extra discount went on top of a store-wide sale already at its maximum.

  3. A common question

Are your prices in US dollars?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Prices are set in US dollars. If you pay in another currency, the checkout converts the amount for you.

Now, the reading

What a stack tells you

No patio in this picture, and no chair. Three outdoor cushions stacked like fresh loaves, and that is the point. Stack identical cushions and any difference in height shows at once. None does here. The boxing, the side band between the top and bottom seams, runs level from piece to piece.

The front edge carries self piping in the same sage. It keeps the corner sharp without a contrast line, which suits a garden where the plants should do the talking. From a few steps back the fine two-tone weave reads as a solid. Up close it breaks into two greens that hide dust, pollen and the odd dry leaf.

The color was chosen for its neighbors. Silver olive leaves above, darker lawn below, sage in between. Gray-green rosemary in a terracotta pot sits at the edge of the frame, and the clay is the only warm note. What grows around your patio?

If the yard is full of gray-leaved plants, a sage or olive solid in water-repellent fabric blends in rather than shouts. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. Know which one you are buying, friend.

Five things the sun shows

What full sun reveals that a catalog shot would soften.

Pinned: Three sage green water-repellent outdoor seat cushions stacked on a limestone wall beside rosemary and an olive tree
  1. Sage two-tone weave

The fine two-tone weave reads as a solid from a distance but hides dust up close.

  2. Self-piped front edge

Piping in the same sage stays almost invisible, so the cushion looks sharp without a contrast outline.

  3. Bottom of the stack

Three identical cushions show how consistent the boxing height is from piece to piece.

  4. Rosemary in terracotta

Gray-green rosemary and clay make the sage cushion look at home in a herb garden.

  5. Olive tree behind

The silvery olive leaves are the color the sage fabric was chosen to sit beside.

Four edges, one patio

Match the edge to the frame, not to the catalog.

Stripes that were never meant to go outside

A buyer wrote to the workshop while planning cushions for a rattan outdoor sofa, a curved-back wicker chair and two gray armchairs. The first pick was a striped range, but that one is 100% cotton and indoor only. The buyer switched to an outdoor-rated stripe.

The sofa frame measured 86½ × 86½ in (220 × 220 cm) and 28¾ in (73 cm) deep. The plan: two 86½ × 28¾ in (220 × 73 cm) seats, taken down from about 6 in to about 5 in thick (15 to 13 cm), plus eight 28¾ × 15¾ in (73 × 40 cm) back pillows. For each chair shape the workshop drew a template from the buyer's photos and sent it for approval.

A curved wicker back is an edge problem, not a fabric problem. The template solved it.

Sizes
Frame 86½ × 86½ × 28¾ in (220 × 220 × 73 cm); seats 86½ × 28¾ × 5 in (220 × 73 × 13 cm); backs 28¾ × 15¾ in (73 × 40 cm)

The lesson: Striped cotton belongs indoors; get the striped look outside with an outdoor-rated stripe.

A box-edge outdoor cushion keeps its full height right to the front seam. A knife-edge cushion thins toward the seam, so it reads like a pillow, not a seat.

Questions buyers ask next

Is a box edge or a knife edge better for an outdoor bench?

For a seat, a box edge. It keeps its full height to the front, so the bench reads flat and square. Knife edges suit back pillows and throws, where a softer, pillow-like rim looks right.

Does self piping matter on outdoor cushions?

Piping in the same fabric firms up the front edge and keeps corners crisp without adding a contrast line. In a garden, that leaves the plants to carry the color.

How do I pick a cushion color for a patio full of plants?

Hold a swatch against the plants in daylight. Sage and olive blend with silver foliage and green lawn; one warm accent, like a terracotta pot, keeps the patio from going all green.
