Ordering a custom bench cushion right: the rust weave under an afternoon window
Afternoon sun, an oak bench, one rust cushion and a cream pillow. The photograph is simple. Getting there in one order takes a little discipline, and I've written the discipline down.
A rust bench cushion turns a simple oak frame under the window into an afternoon reading spot.
The quick answer
To order a custom bench cushion right the first time, send your measurements for a quote before you buy samples, ask for only the two or three swatches you have shortlisted, and put the fabric code, size, thickness and backrest choice in one message. The rust cushion here, code 03, covers the whole bench top with a slim oak border showing.
Afternoon, oak, and a cushion that looks tailored
The rust cushion stops just short of the bench's edges, leaving a slim border of oak all the way around. That border is the whole difference between tailored and draped.
It's a performance weave in a warm rust, code 03, with a box edge and no piping. On a solid this strong, a welt would only add a second line to look at. One cream boucle lumbar leans against the wall to keep all that rust from feeling heavy. The linen curtains soften the sun, and the patterned jute rug carries the warm tone down to the floor.
The open book and the stoneware mug sit mid-bench, right where a person would. That tells you this is a seat, not a display. The potted olive tree gives the corner one green note and something alive to look at over the top of the page.
Pair a strong earthy solid with one textured cream pillow and stop there. The performance and pet-friendly fabrics are a good home for a rust like this, and the bench cushion builder will show you the border before anyone cuts. More shapes live under bench cushions.
Now, dear, the ordering. The steps below are how to skip the back-and-forth.
Pinned by Maggie: five things the afternoon light picks out
Five pins mark the rust bench cushion, the cream boucle pillow, the open book, the stoneware mug and the jute rug.

- Rust bench cushion
Covers the whole top with a slim oak border left showing.
- Cream boucle pillow
One textured cream pillow keeps the rust from feeling heavy.
- Open book
Placed mid-bench to show it is meant for sitting.
- Stoneware mug
Earthy glaze repeats the warm palette.
- Jute rug
The rug carries the rust tone down to the floor.

The ordering message, in the order I'd write it
Measure the bench, then decide the border
Measure the bench, not the cushion you used to have. Write the bench top's length and depth, then the cushion size you want. If a slim border of wood should show, say so.
Ask for a quote before samples
Send the sizes first. A quote tells you whether the project suits your plans before you pay for swatches.
Shortlist two or three shades
Ask for small swatches of only those, not the whole book. The workshop has sent a handful on request, charging just the shipping.
Quote the code
Write the color code from the chart next to the color name, like 03 for this rust. A code leaves nothing to interpret.
Settle the back and the fill in the same message
Say if you want a back cushion, how tall it should be, and which fill: foam or pillow-style. The questions below explain the trade-off.
Seat, back and three shades of warm
A buyer messaged the workshop about a long built-in bench with a wall behind it. They wanted a seat of 85¾ x 25¼ in (218 x 64 cm) and a back cushion of 85¾ x 19¾ in (218 x 50 cm), though 17¾ in (45 cm) tall would also do. The fabric was to be velvet or linen in orange, tobacco or mustard.
Two smart moves. First, they sent the measurements and asked for a quote before paying for any samples. Second, they asked for small swatches of just a few shades instead of the whole book. The workshop agreed and charged only the shipping.
The quote came back, and they took their time to think. Good. That is what a quote is for. Our Pattern on swatches before ordering walks the same route.
Buyer questions: back fill, L corners and velvet in the kitchen
- A common question
Should my back cushions be firm foam or soft like pillows?
The workshop's answerThe workshop asks you to choose and recommends foam. Foam backrests hold their shape better, outdoors too, while pillow-style filling is the less expensive option. One order was for two backrests 25 in (64 cm) wide and 18 in (46 cm) high.
- A common question
Can you make an L-shaped bench cushion with back cushions to match?
The workshop's answerYes. Send the length, width and thickness of each run, with a small sketch or a photo of the area, and the workshop will quote. A lounge bed of about 172¾ x 73¼ in (4.39 x 1.86 m) used one 23½ x 73¼ in (60 x 186 cm) and two 23½ x 74¾ in (60 x 190 cm) seat cushions, 3¼ in (8 cm) thick, with four wedge backrests.
- A common question
Will velvet hold up on a kitchen dining banquette, or is there a tougher fabric in a similar color?
The workshop's answerThe workshop considers velvet a good choice for a kitchen banquette, in shades such as ice blue 128 or minty blue 126. It also offers a linen-style performance fabric as an alternative.

Have it made
Have this made — ask Maggie’s workshop
Numbers first, fabric second, piping last. Jot down what you have, and the workshop will go down the list with you, item by item. — Maggie
Leave your details and the workshop will call you to confirm measurements, fabric, foam and piping. No prices, dates or payment on this page: it is a request, not an order.
Send your bench measurements for a quote first, then ask for only the two or three swatches you shortlisted. One message, one code, no guessing.

Questions buyers ask next
How much wood should show around a rust bench cushion?
A slim border reads as tailored; a cushion hanging over the edge reads as draped. Decide which you want, then send both the bench-top size and the cushion size, so the workshop never has to guess.
What pillow balances a strong rust bench cushion?
One textured cream pillow, such as boucle. It lightens a heavy earthy solid without adding a second color, and a lumbar shape sits low against the wall where it won't crowd the seat.
Why ask for a cushion quote before ordering fabric swatches?
A quote tells you whether the project suits your plans before you spend anything on samples. Once it does, you can narrow the swatches to the two or three shades you would actually choose.
