A Reading by RosaWindow Seat Cushions
A navy window seat cushion in a white kitchen built-in, read through twelve months
A letter about a seat that isn't on a porch at all. A kitchen window, a navy cushion, and a year of people, dogs and weather passing across it.
SaveThe quick answer
A navy performance-weave window seat cushion suits a busy kitchen all year, because the dark weave hides spills and pet hair. Choose one with the same fabric on both faces and piping on both edges, so it can be flipped when summer sun has worked on one side. Keep the shape simple: one rectangle usually beats a corner piece.

Dear neighbor,
What the seat looks like in January
I found this kitchen in the flat, clean light you get after a snowfall, and the navy cushion looked like the only warm coat in the room. White cabinets, glass fronts, wooden cutting boards leaned on the counter, and a herringbone oak floor running under all of it.
The cushion runs wall to wall in the alcove and meets the cabinetry without a gap, so no crumbs and no dropped crayons can slip down the ends. A self-piped edge follows the long straight front of the built-in. Three textured pillows in the same navy lean on the window, which keeps the seat calm next to shelves full of dishes.
The olive tree in its terracotta pot is the one warm note against all that blue and white. The deep sill holds the book and the mug, so nothing has to sit on the cushion. Sheer linen curtains soften the glass. On a gray morning that is a whole breakfast table on one window ledge.

Spring mud, July sun, fall homework
Spring brings muddy paws and pollen through the back door. Kids and dogs are the real quality control, and a navy weave passes where a pale one fails: it hides kitchen spills and pet hair far better. The performance and pet-friendly weaves are made for exactly this corner.
Summer is the hard season for a window seat. The sun comes through the glass every afternoon. When both faces are the same fabric and the piping runs around the top and bottom edges, you can flip the cushion and share the wear. Draw those sheer curtains on the brightest days.
Fall turns the seat into a homework desk. Anyone leaning back against the window frame wants something soft, and the workshop fills back pillows with shredded foam, softer than the solid foam in the seat.
Winter is company season. The window seat becomes the extra chairs when the table runs out. Which season is hardest on yours?
The corner that became a rectangle
A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop with big plans for a narrow ledge above her wall outlets. She wanted an L-shaped corner cushion, about 24 in (61 cm) up one wall and 66 in (168 cm) along a bench 16.5 in (42 cm) deep, single-button tufted, in a light purple or blue velvet.
The workshop asked for one thing first: a photo of the space. Once she looked at the ledge again in that photo, the L fell away. She ordered one 16 x 65 in (41 x 165 cm) cushion, chosen right from the size options on the order page. Simple as a porch step.
- Sizes
- 16 x 65 in (41 x 165 cm); first planned as 24 in + 66 in on a 16.5 in deep bench
- Fabric
- Light velvet, single-button tufting
The lesson: A photo of the space often turns a complicated corner piece into one simple rectangle.
Kitchen-seat questions
- A common question
Which fabric codes should I look at for olive green, and for taupe, cream or a white that isn't too creamy?
The workshop's answerOlive green is code 123 in the velvet chart. Taupe and cream tones sit in the Velvet and Soft charts, and the linen bench range carries the full set, including several whites and off-whites. Shortlist your codes and the workshop sends close-ups, so you can judge warmth and whiteness.
- A common question
My cushion came compressed. How long before it reaches the size I ordered?
The workshop's answerAbout 3 to 4 days, sometimes sooner, sometimes a little longer. If it is still short after that, send a photo with a tape measure along the full length. When a 16 x 94 in (41 x 239 cm) cushion stayed at about 91 3/4 in (233 cm) after 5 days, the workshop remade it and let the buyer keep the first one.
- A common question
What filling would you put in the back cushions of a banquette?
The workshop's answerShredded foam for the back pillows. It is softer than the solid foam used in the seats, and the seat cushions stay high-density foam.
An L-shaped corner cushion planned at 24 in up the wall and 66 in along the bench became one 16 x 65 in rectangle once the buyer sent a photo of the ledge.

Questions buyers ask next
Is navy a practical color for a kitchen window seat cushion?
Yes, for a working kitchen. A dark navy weave hides drips and pet hair far better than ivory or pale gray, and pillows in the same navy keep the seat calm beside busy open shelves.
Can a window seat cushion be flipped to spread out sun wear?
Yes, when both faces are the same fabric and the piping runs around the top and bottom edges. Turn it through the summer and draw sheer curtains on bright afternoons. A non-slip base makes a cushion one-sided, so it cannot be flipped.
Should a kitchen window seat cushion fill the alcove from wall to wall?
In an alcove, yes. Measure the space itself, wall to wall, and give the exact size, because the maker works its own allowance into the cut. A cushion that fills the recess leaves no gaps at the ends for crumbs.

P.S. Take a photo of your window seat before you write to the workshop, outlets and all. One picture turned a buyer's L-shaped plan into a single rectangle.
