A Reading by ÉlodieCustom Throw Pillows
Four chenille colorways of custom throw pillows, put through a week of real life
Four pillows, one weave, four moods. Before you choose by color, choose by the life the pillow is going to lead.
SaveThe quick answer
For a busy living room, choose the chenille colorway that hides everyday wear, not only the one that looks best in a studio. Of these four knife-edge pillows, teal and charcoal is coolest, rust and teal liveliest, mustard and gray warmest, and gray and cream most neutral. All share a cream ground, so any two mix, and a tired cover can be replaced alone.
Buyer questions
- A common question
I need several covers. Do I place one order or several?
The workshop's answerOne order works. Choose the size, add it to your cart, then raise the quantity on the next page before you check out, and repeat for each size. Separate purchases for each item work too.
- A common question
Can you make round bolster armrests to match my window seat cushion?
The workshop's answerYes, in the same fabric and piping. One buyer paired a 20 x 73 in seat with two bolsters 7 in in diameter and 20 in long; another ordered a single bolster 47 in (120 cm) long and 6 in (15 cm) across. Bolsters arrive with their filling inside.
- A common question
Is it much cheaper to order only the covers, without the foam?
The workshop's answerMuch cheaper. One set of nine outdoor pieces, four backrests, four seats and one large cushion, came to less than half the full-cushion price as covers only, shipping included. A single replacement cover in a new color can be ordered on its own too.
Now, the reading
New covers for a sofa from somewhere else
A buyer got in touch about a floor sofa from another maker. The shape was fine; the covers were not. They wanted new ones made to measure.
The base cushions measured 80 x 39 3/8 x 7 in (203 x 100 x 18 cm). The L-shaped pieces were 39 3/8 x 39 3/8 x 10 5/8 in (100 x 100 x 27 cm). And they asked the question everyone asks: should the covers be cut bigger than the cushions?
The workshop asked for a photo first. It also offered filled backrests, but the buyer kept to covers only, made in their custom sizes with a slightly longer production time.
The rule I took from it: give the insert's exact dimensions and let the maker decide the ease. That is their arithmetic, not yours. See cushion covers for existing foam before you measure.
Reading the stack in studio light
The photograph is honest in the way a studio is honest: soft neutral light, a pale wall, a light oak bench, and four woven chenille pillows stacked like a tasting menu.
From the top. Teal and charcoal is the coolest, teal ribbons running between charcoal chevrons; it belongs in rooms with gray walls and north light. Rust and teal is the liveliest, rust leading, teal and mustard answering. Mustard and gray is warmer and quieter, content beside oak floors and caramel leather. Gray and cream is the most neutral, easy in white or gray schemes.
The quiet genius is the cream ground they all share. Because of it, any two can sit on one sofa without quarreling. Let one color speak and the others listen: choose your loud one, then take its partner from the same stack.
These are knife-edge pillows, so the seam tapers to the corners instead of standing up as a boxed side. That suits a chunky weave; the texture does the work a gusset would. The pile looks richest against plain solids such as bouclé or linen, and the Pattern on matching throw pillows and lumbar pillows has more pairings. Which of the four would survive your living room, my friends?
Pinned by Élodie: four weaves and one seam
Five pins name each colorway from teal and charcoal down to gray and cream, then point to the knife-edge seam that keeps the pillows soft at the corners.

- Teal and charcoal weave
The coolest colorway, with teal ribbons between charcoal chevrons.
- Rust and teal weave
The liveliest variant, pairing rust with teal and mustard.
- Mustard and gray weave
A warmer, quieter version that suits oak and caramel rooms.
- Gray and cream weave
The most neutral colorway, easy with gray or white schemes.
- Knife-edge seam

The daily-life test, colorway by colorway
- Crumbs and small spills: the busy multicolor weaves, rust and teal above all, hide a week of small marks that a pale solid would show at once.
- Pet hair: choose the colorway nearest your animal's coat. A gray dog on the gray and cream pillow simply disappears.
- Claws and toy wheels: a chunky pile has loops, and loops can catch. With a cat that kneads, keep chenille on the sofa, not on the floor.
- Sun: every dyed fabric in a bright window changes over the seasons. Rotate pillows between rooms so a set ages together.
- Wear: when a cover tires before its insert, order the cover alone. Covers only cost far less than full pillows.

Color is easier to settle in a conversation than on a screen. Tell the workshop about the room and the light it gets, and the fabric choice follows. — Élodie

Choose throw pillow colors for the life they will lead: a busy rust and teal chenille hides a week of crumbs that a pale solid shows by Tuesday.

Questions buyers ask next
Are knife-edge or boxed pillows better for a chunky fabric?
Knife-edge, usually. A chunky weave already has depth and texture, so a tapered seam keeps the pillow relaxed. Boxed edges suit smoother fabrics, where a gusset adds shape the cloth can't give on its own.
How do I mix two patterned pillows without them clashing?
Choose two that share a ground color. These four chenille colorways all sit on cream, so any pair looks related even when one is teal and the other rust. Put a plain solid between them to rest the eye.
Will chenille pillows hold up with a cat or dog in the house?
Chenille's looped pile can catch on claws, and no pillow fabric is safe from a determined pet. Pick a colorway close to your pet's coat to hide hair, and keep the chunkiest weaves off the floor.
