A Reading by ÉlodieCustom Throw Pillows
A cream and black jacquard throw pillow on an oxblood velvet chair
A letter from a corner with one chair, one lamp and one beam of light, where the smallest thing does the most work.
SaveThe quick answer
In a small, dark corner, one light-ground throw pillow does more than three dark ones: it becomes the brightest point, so the eye lands there and the chair feels larger. Choose a knife-edge pillow so it does not eat seat depth, and a zippered cover so you can change the color later without replacing the insert.

My friends,
The brightest square in a dark room
One hard beam comes in from the side and finds a single throw pillow on an oxblood tufted velvet chair. Everything else stays deep: wine-dark velvet, leather-bound books in cordovan and tobacco, a dark wood floor, and a sliver of brass lamp at the top of the frame.
The pillow is a black and cream geometric jacquard, and the side light tells you how it was built. The cream shapes are a raised loop; the black is a flatter yarn. That relief is why the square glows instead of lying flat. A cream piping bead runs the edge and catches the same beam, drawing the outline in light.
In a narrow corner you cannot add furniture, so you add a focal point. One pale square gives the eye a place to land, and a corner with a place to land feels roomier than an empty one.
The pillow is a knife-edge shape, slim at the seams, so it rests against the tufting without pushing you forward. Where does the light fall in your reading corner at nine at night?
Pinned by Élodie: five points of light
Five spots in the frame, from the brass lamp at the top to the cream piping.

Side light shows raised cream loops against a flatter black weave.
- Oxblood tufting
Deep red velvet makes the pale pillow the brightest point.

Brown covers, a hot dryer and a lint roller
A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop after washing new brown corduroy covers for a floor sofa and ottoman. They used 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle, which was right. Then the covers went into a tumble dryer.
The non-slip backing shed rubbery particles through the washer and dryer, and some melted onto the drum. The workshop's advice: let everything dry, shake the covers out and clean the filter. A lint roller worked best. Replacement covers were offered at a reduced price.
A light cover in a dark room is a cover you will wash, so read its care line before the first spill.

The lesson: Covers with a rubberized non-slip base should be washed cool and air dried, never tumble dried hot.
Three questions about covers on their own
- A common question
If I order covers only for the floor sofa, do the foam and the frame come too?
The workshop's answerNo. Covers-only means the fabric covers alone, with no foam inserts and no metal frame. Because buyers sometimes think they bought the whole sofa, the workshop messages every covers-only buyer before production and cancels a mistaken order so the full sofa can be ordered.
- A common question
On a cushion cover, which measurement is the width and which is the length?
The workshop's answerWidth runs front edge to back edge, the depth you sit on. Length runs side to side across the front, usually the longer side. Or simply label your numbers, such as 20 in deep x 60 in across (51 x 152 cm), and it will be made correctly.
- A common question
I picked the wrong fabric, or the blue came out brighter than I wanted. Can I get a new cover?
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop makes a new cover in whichever code you choose, such as a navy in place of a royal blue, and has offered replacement covers below the listed price. Outdoor fabrics usually cost more than indoor ones.
In a dark reading corner, one throw pillow on a light ground does more than three dark ones. The pale square becomes the brightest point in the room.

Questions buyers ask next
Does a knife-edge pillow take up less room than a boxed one?
Yes. A knife-edge pillow is sewn front to back with no side band, so it tapers at the seams and sits slimmer against a chair back. On a shallow reading chair, that leaves more of the seat for you.
Which pillow color works best on a dark velvet chair?
A light ground, such as cream with a black pattern, gives an oxblood or olive chair one bright point. Dark on dark disappears in low evening light; the pale pillow keeps the corner from feeling heavy.
Why does a jacquard pillow look so different in side light?
A jacquard is woven, not printed, so the pattern has relief. Low side light throws the raised yarns forward and the flat ones back, which is why this cream and black square looks almost carved.

P.S. Before you order a cover in a new code, lay the swatch on the chair at the hour you actually read there. Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does.
