A green-striped corner floor cushion, read through four seasons

Forest green awning stripe on a blue-gray wall, a cane mirror above, a navy rug below. Corners like this one change with the weather, and this one will too.

The quick answer

A corner floor cushion is ordered by its two sides along the walls, up to 48 in (122 cm) each as standard. For a reading nook, ask for 5 to 6 in of thickness instead of the standard 4 in. Cotton stripe is an indoor fabric that can fade in strong window sun, so keep it out of the brightest patch.

Green stripe on a January-colored wall

I still stop at a stripe in a corner. This one is forest green and white, the old awning stripe, on a corner floor cushion against a wall the blue-gray of a winter sky.

Green and blue sit side by side on the color wheel, so the pair stays calm even at full contrast. The navy rug is darker than both and holds the pale seat to the floor the way a good hem holds a curtain.

The seat has a box edge with self piping, and the two flanged backrest pillows are cut from the same stripe. A seam is a promise, and here nothing on the cushion argues with anything else.

Now look up, my friend. A cane ring mirror, a white ceramic lamp, a small round oak table: the only warm notes, set at different heights so the warmth travels. The pothos on the sill trails real green toward the woven green. What does your corner measure along each wall?

The same corner, four times a year

  1. Winter. Low sun, cold boards. The navy rug earns its keep, and a 5 in (12.5 cm) seat sits higher off the floor than the standard 4 in (10 cm).
  2. Spring. Wash day. The cover unzips and goes in at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Hang it to dry.
  3. Summer. Indoor cotton stripes have limited UV resistance, so a stripe that sits in hours of direct sun fades where the light lands. Slide the seat out of the brightest patch.
  4. Fall. Spare covers fit the foam you already own, so a darker one can take the cold months while the green rests in the closet.
A real project

Two little girls and a 46-inch corner

A parent in the US wrote to the workshop about a reading nook for two little girls. The corner measured 46 in (117 cm) along each wall, and the note asked for extra thickness.

The workshop priced the seat at 5 in and at 6 in (15 cm), and sent photographs of cream, beige and smoke. The family chose smoke, at 5 in: enough foam that nobody's knees meet the floor. The quarter-circle sizes explain the shape.

Sizes
46 in (117 cm) along each wall, 5 in (12.5 cm) thick
Fabric
Smoke, chosen from cream, beige and smoke

The lesson: For a corner nook, give the side length along each wall and ask for 5 to 6 in of thickness.

Cotton stripe fades where the afternoon sun lands. If a corner floor cushion sits in that patch every day, move it or keep a spare cover for summer.

What folks ask before and after the box arrives

  1. A common question

The floor cushion came out smaller than I pictured and doesn't fill the space. Can I send it back?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, under the workshop's return policy. It was made to the exact size ordered, so the buyer pays return shipping, with no prepaid labels, and the refund follows once it arrives in good condition. The workshop also offers a remake in the exact size of your space.

  2. A common question

Do you ship to the US, Hawaii included, and who brings it to the door?

    The workshop's answer

Yes: orders to the US, Hawaii included, have gone by UPS or FedEx express, and the courier brings the parcel to your door. Your quote states the shipping cost, and Hawaii can take a little longer than the mainland.

  3. A common question

The chrome support bars for my floor sofa came with brown spots. Is that rust?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop says no: it is production residue that can remain even after the bars are checked and cleaned. A cloth usually wipes it off. If it won't come off, or a bar is damaged, send the workshop a daylight photo of the spot.

Questions buyers ask next

How big can a corner floor cushion be?

The standard maximum is 48 in (122 cm) along each wall. At that size a quarter-round front runs about 75.4 in (192 cm), so tape the shape on the floor before you order.

Is a 6 in corner cushion priced the same as a 4 in one?

Not usually. The 2 to 5 in thicknesses are generally priced alike; 6 in and thicker builds are made on request at extra cost. Send the side lengths and thickness for a quote.

Can the stripe be woven in my own color combination?

No. The stripes are woven into the cotton, so the colors come as the mill made them. Choose from the existing stripe codes, and ask for daylight photos of any code first.

Sit well. — Harlan
