A Reading by CallumChaise Lounge & Sunbed Cushions
A coral cabana-stripe sunbed cushion by the pool, and where the money should go
Hard noon sun, wet swimsuits, a breeze across the deck. This lounger cushion is built for all three, and past orders show which parts are worth paying for.
SaveThe quick answer
On a sunbed cushion, spend on outdoor fabric and ties, and save by ordering covers only when the inserts are still good. Open-air loungers need the outdoor range; regular fabric is fine only under a closed roof. Ties at the hinge and the foot keep a two-section chaise lounge cushion in place, and bundled pieces get set pricing.
Three questions, before the reading
Roofs, bundles and paperwork: what buyers ask once the budget is on the table.
- A common question
Can I use your floor cushions outside on a covered balcony or a screened porch?
The workshop's answerUnder a closed roof, the regular fabrics are fine. For open-air use the cushions are made in outdoor fabric, and any piece can be: seat, backrest or bolster, screened porches included.
- A common question
Do you give a discount on a larger order?
The workshop's answerYes, larger orders get bundle pricing. Ten outdoor covers ordered together and a five-cushion kitchen bench set with non-slip backing both came in below their piece-by-piece totals, and four matching 16 x 16 in (40 x 40 cm) pillows were sold as a set.
- A common question
Can you send a formal invoice that lists every item and what I paid?
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop can issue a formal invoice that names every item and its value, plus a full order confirmation. Check that the totals match what you actually paid; two documents with different amounts only cause confusion.
Now, the reading
Reading the lounger in full sun
Friend, this is a working cushion. A rattan lounger on a concrete pool deck, a rolled blue solar cover on its reel, a mesh safety fence, a gray-sided house, turquoise water. Hard midday sun on all of it. The sunbed cushion is made in two sections so it follows the lounger's adjustable back, and it is slim enough that the honey rattan shows underneath.
The stripe is the clever part. Wide coral and white bands run head to toe, so they line up across the fold and the two sections read as one piece. Coral sits opposite the pool blue, and the rattan adds a third, sandy note between them.
Ties sit at the hinge and at the foot. The hinge ties stop the back section sliding down the frame when you sit up; the foot ties hold the cushion when wind comes across the deck.
The cloth comes from the water-repellent range, which shrugs off a wet swimsuit. People search for waterproof outdoor cushions, and I understand why. But water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. Know which one you are paying for. How many hours of full sun does your deck get on a July afternoon?
Pinned by Callum: ties, stripe and pool light
Five pins, from the tie at the hinge to the pool cover reel that sets up the color.

- Tie at the hinge
Fabric ties at the recline position stop the back section sliding down the frame.
- Tie at the foot
A second tie at the foot end keeps the cushion in place on windy days.
- Backrest section
Wide stripes run head to toe, so they line up across the fold.
- Pool cover reel
The blue roller repeats the pool color, and coral sits opposite it for contrast.
- Rattan frame
Honey rattan warms the coral and shows below the slim cushion.

Where to spend and save on a sunbed cushion
A plain ledger, drawn from the photo and past orders.
| Where | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor fabric | Spend | Open-air loungers need the outdoor range; indoor cloth has limited UV resistance and fades in strong, prolonged sun |
| Ties at hinge and foot | Spend | They keep a two-section cushion on the frame when you shift and when the wind picks up |
| Good inserts you already own | Save | Zippered covers made to their exact size cost less than filled cushions |
| Edging on a striped cover | Save | Pipe it in the same stripe instead of hunting for a solid that almost matches |
| Several pieces at once | Save | Bundled orders get set pricing, below the piece-by-piece total |
| Off-season storage | Free | Bringing cushions indoors costs nothing and spares them the worst weather |
Seven covers, one stripe and a green that wouldn't match
A buyer messaged the workshop wanting new green-and-white striped covers for the original inserts of an IKEA DUVHOLMEN outdoor lounge: two seat covers of about 48 3/4 x 24 1/2 x 4 3/4 in (124 x 62 x 12 cm) and five back covers of about 24 1/2 x 17 1/4 x 5 1/2 in (62 x 44 x 14 cm). The plan was a wide solid dark green border around each one.
The workshop suggested the closest stripe, then flagged the trouble. Matching a solid to the exact green of a woven stripe is hard, and a near miss shows from across the patio. So it proposed piping cut from the same striped fabric instead, an edge that can never be the wrong green.
- Sizes
- Seats about 48 3/4 x 24 1/2 x 4 3/4 in (x2); backs about 24 1/2 x 17 1/4 x 5 1/2 in (x5)
- Fabric
- Green-and-white stripe, piped in the same stripe
The lesson: Self-piping in the stripe avoids a near-miss solid color that clashes.
A sunbed cushion needs ties in two places: at the hinge, so the back section can't slide down the frame, and at the foot, so the wind can't lift it.

On the cutting table: the coral stripe sunbed
| Cushion | Two-section sunbed cushion, back and seat, box edge |
|---|---|
| Fabric | Coral and white wide stripe, water-repellent outdoor range |
| Stripe | Runs head to toe and lines up across the hinge |
| Piping | Self piping |
| Ties | At the hinge and at the foot |
| Thickness | 4 in (10 cm), the thickness outdoor quotes assume |
| Care | Store indoors off-season; a fabric protectant spray helps |
| Best for | Rattan and wicker pool loungers in full sun |

Questions buyers ask next
Do sunbed cushions need ties?
On a lounger with an adjustable back, yes. Ties at the hinge stop the back section sliding when you sit up, and ties at the foot hold the cushion in wind. Ties can be sewn into the seams at the corners or the back, in any position.
Is outdoor cushion fabric fully waterproof?
Not in the strict sense. The outdoor range is woven polyester with water-repellent and UV- and fade-resistant finishes, so it sheds a wet swimsuit, but it is water-repellent rather than waterproof. Store cushions indoors off-season; a protectant spray helps.
Can I reuse the foam from my old lounger cushion?
Yes, if it is still in good shape. Zippered covers can be made to fit foam you already own, at a lower price than filled cushions. Send the exact foam sizes, because the covers are cut to those numbers rather than to the old covers.
