A Reading by RosaWindow Seat Cushions
A chambray blue window seat cushion with a box edge and ticking-stripe pillows
A drawer base changes everything about the edge. Pull up a chair and I'll tell you why this one is a box, and when yours shouldn't be.
SaveThe quick answer
A window seat cushion over drawers works best as one firm box-edge piece that lifts off in a single move. A box edge keeps the front square and gives piping a straight line to follow. Knife edges suit thin chair pads and pillows, rounded corners suit seats that meet a wall, and angled corners follow bay windows.
Buyer questions: backs against the wall, quiet colors, a clinic bench
- A common question
My bench doesn't have a backrest. Can a back cushion just lean against the wall?
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop made a 25 x 74 in (64 x 188 cm) seat with a back cushion and arm pillows for a bench set into a room corner, and the back cushion rests directly against the wall.
- A common question
Which cushion color looks nice without jumping out at you?
The workshop's answerThe color is your call, but tones already in the room, such as the sofa or the wood of the furniture, blend in most naturally. Shortlist one or two fabric codes and the workshop sends close-up photos. It will even mock up body and piping pairs: one color piped in the other, then the reverse.
- A common question
Do you make custom cushions for bench seating in a clinic or a business?
The workshop's answerYes, commercial bench cushions are made to order. Send the sizes and the workshop quotes from them.
Now, the reading
One firm box over a row of drawers
Every drawer under a window seat is a promise that somebody will lift the cushion. On my own porch bench it happens twice a day, once for the flashlight and once for the dog leash.
That is why this chambray blue window seat cushion is one firm piece with a box edge: a top panel, a straight side band and a bottom panel, stitched square, with a natural white welt riding both seams. You grab the front edge, tip it back against the glass, open the drawer, drop it again. Nothing folds in the middle.
The cloth is a linen-look weave in soft chambray, the blue of a work shirt washed a hundred times. The white piping matches the painted Shaker fronts below, so the edge of the cushion and the edge of the joinery read as one clean line. Sheer curtains soften the daylight until the corner feels like a porch on a bright, cloudy morning.
The props each have a job, neighbor. Two taupe ticking-stripe pillows bring a coastal note without a second blue; navy would have argued with the chambray. The gray waffle throw is draped over the front edge on purpose, so a long straight seat stops looking like a diving board. The stack of design books on the cream wool rug says reading spot and adds some height down by the floor.
More on window seat cushions and on box edge versus knife edge.
Pinned by Rosa: five spots on the window seat
Five pins, from the ticking-stripe pillows to the drawers that decided the edge.

- Ticking stripe pillows
Narrow taupe stripes add a coastal note without bringing in a second color.
- Waffle throw
A draped throw breaks the long straight edge and shows how soft the seat is.
- White piping
A crisp white welt matches the joinery and sharpens a soft blue.
- Stack of books
Books on the floor suggest a reading spot and add height near the rug.
- Shaker drawers
Drawers under the seat mean the cushion must lift off in one easy piece.

Box, knife, rounded or angled: which edge for which seat
| Edge | How it is built | Where it earns its place |
|---|---|---|
| Box edge | Top, side band and bottom, with square corners | Window seats, benches, anything lifted often or piped |
| Knife edge | Two panels sewn together at the rim, thinner toward the edges | Thin chair pads and throw pillows |
| Rounded corners | Box or knife, with the corners cut on a curve | Seats that meet a wall or a spot people brush past |
| Angled corners | Corners cut to follow a wall that isn't square | Bay windows and nooks with angled ends |
Three sizes, then a fourth, and one checkout
A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about neutral linens for a set of built-in benches and one small ledge. Three sizes: 48 x 20 in (122 x 51 cm), 41 x 18.75 in (104 x 48 cm), and a little 14 x 9 in (36 x 23 cm) for the ledge. The workshop sent its natural linen color chart and quoted all three together.
Then, like every good porch project, it grew. The buyer added a 60.5 x 17 in (154 x 43 cm) cushion in a second natural shade. Instead of four separate orders, the workshop built one combined custom order, and the buyer checked out once.
Four seats, four sizes, one checkout. If your house has benches in three rooms, send every size in the same message. Which seat in your house gets lifted most?
The lesson: Group a multi-size bench order into one custom order so the buyer checks out once.
If a window seat has drawers underneath, make the window seat cushion one firm box-edge piece that lifts off in a single move.

Questions buyers ask next
What is the difference between a box edge and a knife edge cushion?
A box edge has a side band between the top and bottom panels, so it keeps its full thickness right to the corners. A knife edge joins two panels at the rim and thins toward the edges. Box suits window seats; knife suits thin pads and pillows.
Should a window seat cushion over drawers be one piece or several?
One piece, if it is comfortable to lift. A single firm cushion tips back against the glass in one move when a drawer opens. Split it only when the seat is too long to handle, and plan the split so each piece still covers whole drawers.
Does white piping work on a blue window seat cushion?
Yes, especially when the seat base or window trim is painted white. The white welt picks up the joinery and sharpens a soft blue. In a busy room or on a dark base, self piping in the same blue is the quieter choice.
When should a window seat cushion have rounded corners?
When a corner meets a curved end, sits out in the open or is a spot people brush past. Rounded corners look softer and are gentler on legs. A seat fitted tight between two square walls usually looks best with square box corners.
